- Dexter teams up with a fellow Dark Passenger when he takes a road trip to Nebraska; Debra deals with the complications of her promotion as she leads the Doomsday investigation.
- Dexter disposes of Nick's body in the ocean after having drowned him in the previous episode. Debra faces scrutiny because her department's case clearance rate is low. Dexter finds out that Rebecca and Sally Mitchell (the daughter and wife of the Trinity Killer) have been killed, which son Jonah blames on his father (who only Dexter knows is dead). He drives to Nebraska to confront Jonah, who reveals that his mother blamed her children for their father's actions, causing Rebecca to commit suicide; following this, Jonah beat his mother to death in anger. Dexter lets Jonah live, telling him to forgive himself. Meanwhile, back in Miami, Masuka and his new intern find a lead related to Doomsday. Travis tells Gellar that he is done working for God and moves in with his sister.
- Dexter is on the boat with the ghost of his brother, Brian Moser (Christian Camargo), a/k/a "Rudy Cooper, the Ice Truck Killer." Dexter says he's relieved he doesn't have to pretend there's any light in him.
Deb calls Dexter in to tell him she thinks "Trinity" has killed again. Mitchell's wife and daughter were killed in rural Nebraska. The son Jonah survived and said he saw the attacker. Dexter thinks this means Jonah is masquerading as his father. Deb gives him some time off to process.
Travis spends time with his sister Lisa (Molly Parker). He tells her he's playing hooky from an assignment his boss has given him. Travis spots Gellar outside the window. He tells him he's "done" but Gellar isn't having it. He says he's carrying on God's work until Travis's "detour is over."
Dexter is surprised by the death of Jonah's mother (bludgeoned with a hockey stick) and sister (traditional Trinity bathtub scene) since he knows he loved them. Brian and Dexter talk this through and they realize that this son of a serial killer seems to be showing inherited talent. Brian wants them to drive the 30 hours to Nebraska and take care of Jonah. Brian thinks he "needs" this trip. Dexter is going to do it, telling Jamie that he needs to get away for 4-5 days. She's going to live at his place and take care of Harrison.
On the road Dexter calls Deb and says he needs to clear his head and wants time off from work.
Deb has to present her department's ComStat figures to the brass. Maria is tough on her and afterward they argue. Maria thinks things will get better if the Dooms Day Killer is found. Deb calls Dexter back and asks him not to take four days off, since she needs him to catch DDK.
Along the way Dexter uncharacteristically hooks up with a convenience store clerk. It is a ruse to distract her so that on his way out he can steal the revolver that he had spotted behind the counter. With Brian egging him on Dexter shoots at road signs from the car and pushes his speed up to 100.
Dexter finds Jonah (Brando Eaton), who calls him by his real name, instead of "Kyle Butler," the identity he used while getting close to Arthur Mitchell. Since he tried to help them they didn't tell the FBI who he was. Dexter says he pretended to be someone else because he wanted to be a hero. Jonah tells Dexter that he saw his father (who Dexter killed) kill his mother and sister. Jonah tells Dexter to go back to Miami: "It's over."
Deb and Angel interview the woman, Holly (Lacey Beeman), who Travis let go. She says she thinks they made her drink blood while she was blindfolded, and called her "The Whore."
Jamie is dating Masuka's intern and Angel isn't happy.
Deb calls Dexter but he doesn't pick up. Dexter pays cash for a motel room. Dexter has had a flat and Norm (Scott Michael Campbell), the guy at the desk, says he'll do it for him. Norm asks Dexter a lot of questions, noticing that his car has Florida plates. He doesn't seem to buy Dexter's story of being a landscaper. Walking into town, Brian leads Dexter into the corn fields and they find a small collection of marijuana plants, likely the reason for Norm's questions.
Travis looks at Gellar's place through the fence. He's up to some strange-looking stuff inside.
Based on Gellar's diary Deb's team's figured out that Holly was being made to drink their blood. They determine his young assistant is probably a former student. Deb is still trying to reach Dexter.
Louis shows Jamie that's he working on a video game based on the department. Deb drops by wanting to know where Dexter is. She calls him from his home number which, of course, he picks up. He doesn't give her any information, but realizes that Jonah needs to be taken care of quickly.
Norm finishes the car and Dexter heads to Jonah's place. Dexter tells Brian he's not sure if Jonah's guilty. Brian doesn't like it. Dexter sees that his knives and forensic kit are missing from the trunk. When running a test for bleach Dexter runs into Jonah. Dexter admits he killed Jonah's father and Jonah takes off.
Dexter returns to the motel to get his stuff back from Norm. In a shed Norm tries to get him to pay him $10,000 for his own knives. When things get physical, Dexter kills him with a pitchfork and, with no large bodies of water around, disposes of Norm's body in a nearby grain silo.
Brian is still trying to convince him that guilt doesn't matter. Brian seems to have convinced him to continue killing once he takes care of Jonah.
Travis returns to Gellar, saying he's there to return the professor's things. Travis assures him that he's done, but Gellar begins to detail the sins of human kind. Travis says he wants to be free. Gellar tells him "talk to God, I release you."
Quinn apologizes to Deb for proposing. He said he thought it was "something people did." They start to reminisce and he kisses her on the cheek.
Jonah calls Dexter, wanting to meet someplace private. Dexter and Brian realize he's going to want to kill Dexter. In the hardware store Dexter gets the upper hand on him and Johah asks him to kill him. Dexter lets him go and Jonah tells him that his sister committed suicide. When he found his sister he lost his mind and killed his mother, who always defended his father and blamed the brother and sister for his actions. Despite Brian egging him on, Dexter realizes that Jonah isn't a monster. He pushes past Brian and gets in his car. He tells Jonah to forgive himself and runs Brian over on his way out.
Louis, using some software he had developed, has narrowed the list of Gellar's possible student assistants to 200. We see that Travis is in the group.
Travis looks at a picture of himself and Gellar.
On Dexter's way home Harry gets into the car.
