Interesting debut feature, not flawless but often fascinating

I am one of the critics invited to see Odilon Rocha's film last week and to comment. It is an intriguing piece set in Brazil in 1978 and it's much more serious than you might suppose from its English title, Prime Time Soap. In fact it starts by recalling "Thelma and Louise" as two female friends refuse to be victimised, but it then develops into a film that will appeal to those who admire Almodovar and his handling of female roles. But there's also a touch of Jacques Demy and a political and social concern that reminds one of Argentina's Pablo Trapero. One expects a contrast between the escapism of soaps and the real world in which the film is set, but this is blurred. That's a flaw, but see it if you can.
