'Criminal Minds' and sexual sadism
TheLittleSongbird15 March 2017
When on form, and even better at its best, 'Criminal Minds' is one of my most watched and most re-watched shows and is a personal favourite. It is nowhere near as good now, but there are still good to great episodes made every now and then when the show doesn't forget what it's about, but Seasons 1-5 was its prime period.

Season 6 was when 'Criminal Minds' became wildly hit and miss, and generally is one of the show's weakest seasons. "Out of the Light" is one of Season 6's middling episodes, rather than being one of the best or worst. It isn't as good as "Middle Man", "Remembrance of Things Past", "The Longest Night", "Into the Woods" and "Hanley Waters", but it does fare far better than the likes of "Today I Do", "With Friends Like These", "25 to Life" and particularly "The Thirteenth Step".

The production values as always are very high in quality, being atmospheric and stylish, while the music has the right amount of the ominous touch and the pathos. The direction is alert and sympathetic and most of the script is thought-provoking with a good balance of mystery, bonding and humour, and there is more profiling than some other episodes of the season with less over-convenience and conclusion jumping.

Particularly great scenes were the whole soccer subplot with Hotch and Jack, the tense and emotional climax (that also had the benefit of being beautifully filmed) and the tautly written and edge of your seat interrogation scene with Talbot. Loved that Hotch was much closer to the character fans love him for rather than being side-lined to invisibility like he has been, and that Rossi also has a lot to do and his trademark sass comes through (you even learn a couple more things about him). Morgan's role in the climax was great.

Acting all round is very good, and the case has a gruesome grit, creepiness and emotion on the most part.

With that being said, the case also could have been better executed. The whole Talbot thing was too obvious too early a red herring, while also being obvious that he was hardly innocent. It is a shame because he was a creepy and interesting character and made much more impact than Bremmer. To me Bremmer was a little blandly developed and the connection/descent from the state of his family life with the abuse to the sexual sadism was confusingly handled, and what should have been creepy comes over as far-fetched thanks to some ridiculous inaccuracies regarding the crimes even by 'Criminal Minds' standards.

Really not a fan of Seaver still. In almost every single episode she featured in (the latter half of Season 6 from "What Happens at Home" to the season finale) her material has been a complete waste and the character is just dull, annoying, condescending, too inexperienced and prone to making dumb remarks.

Overall, decent middling Season 6 episode. 6/10 Bethany Cox

Gotta love a Glock!
dpasq-848-45091719 February 2019
The episode itself was decent, including the creepy art teacher. I was thrilled watching the performance of Hotch's Glock 17 underwater. Didn't believe myself until I "mythbusted" it. Took three shots: 1- break glass, 2- shot to create what is known as "torpedo effect", 3- shot close enough to (2) it uses the disturbed flow creating a vacuum to actually propel faster than normal. Underwater wake is appropriated using the Kelvin scale for those skeptics, it's science!

End scene was not well researched
kyms2 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
The story was well written, but more attention should have been paid to the details. If the episode centers around a photography teacher, then someone should have researched the photograph development process - especially given the fact that they were going to use the process in filming. The last scene includes a darkroom in which someone is developing a photograph. The photograph is shown developing in a tray, and then it is removed from the tray and hung up to dry. This is completely wrong. The photo should have been placed into a stop bath next, or the photo would have continued to darken and be ruined. I really enjoyed the story, and not being familiar with the N.C. landscape, those mishaps didn't bother me. I am used to fictitious names being used for places and businesses/schools in an area, as well. My admiration for the episode was totally lost, however, when this particular scene played out. It's such a small thing to research, and it wasn't even worth it to someone working on this script.

Just Some Notes about North Carolina
apswartz4 May 2011
The places mentioned, fictitious and real, are from all over the state. There is no North Carolina College in Raleigh. There is a North Carolina State University (NCSU).

Raleigh is not 4 hours away from Washington County (which is northeast of Raleigh). The terrain shown in the episode is all wrong for northeastern NC, which is flat, on the coastal plain. The terrain shown is more like that west of Winston-Salem, in the foothills of the Appalachians. There is a community called Lake Worth in NC, but it is in Dare County, not Washington County.

Lake Worth is about 200 miles away from Raleigh, but it is very flat land, not the terrain shown in the episode (it is almost on the ocean). Wilkesboro is in the western part on NC, in the mountains. A policeman from Washington County or Dare County would not be involved in a raid in Wilkesboro, NC.

can you really shot someone under water ?
mounabenjazia977 April 2020
I didn't mind this episode as much, some of this season's epsiodes were really bad that they kinda overshadow the mediocrity of this one. so i have many takes on this episodes. first, aren't we done already with Emily's "death" subplote. it became really repititive, its irritating. the team seems to cope with everything throughout the seasons (Gideon, haley's death) but now it looks like we are going to deal with their grief for a minute. the other annoying thing is that Emiley is not even dead, and since the audience are aware of it, it is really useless to keep reminding us of her fake loss.

secondly, why can't they ever be smart about their decisions, they could have followed the first unsub secretly without the big show arrest in the school. first because, it's more productive than forcing a confess, and also they could have bought some time for the victim. ironically the first suspect turned out to be the partner, they could have busted him if they just did it secretly

thirdly, and to add to what i said above about their poor tactic decisions , why can't they make the arrest "silently". it is cut and clear if the unsub heard the police sirens they would run away immediately , so why all the fuss about it ?; i guess we need the chasing scene for "the dramatic effect" but if we really needed that we would watch S.W.A.T or HawaII five-o not criminal ""minds""

finally; i think Ashley really shined in this episode, her character is starting to grow on me. we shall see more of her in the next seasons

Dumb Mistakes From an Elite Experience Team
Mehki_Girl29 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Why on earth would you blast sirens to go arrest someone who you know has done something? If you're going to do that, why did you not send someone to the restaurant and the other team to his house. It's a small town, the sheriff knows where he lives.

No, instead everybody goes to one place. No one's over where he probably has the girl - his house. Dumb mistake#1

Why didn't you keep an eye on the creepy teacher, because there's no way he gave up his hobby. Sexual predators never do that and he was a predator. Not to mention the fact, it was pretty obvious when you were investigating the burial sites that there had to be two players. Why didn't you connect these two? He's got creepy pictures of the girl and somebody else has her. There's a tie right there. How do you miss that? Dumb mistake #2 Then when they go to arrest him when he's at the blocksde, no one radio's the sheriff to radio the blockage sheriff that's unsub is in the line of cars. He could have gotten in his car and blocked the front, at the same time, Morgan can block the back. Better yet Morgan or even better fever could have gotten out of the their car just acted like they were walking by and put a gun to his head 1 Nope, just a big old announcement from cars away and just plenty of space and time rev up and drive around the sheriff and plunges into the lake. Dumb mistake #3.

There's more but these three were the worst offenses.

What I did enjoy was Hotch blasting him in his brain what. I didn't enjoy was the team not telling the sheriff, you need to watch creepy teacher guy.
