Is It Finally Time to Move on from the Last Century’s Blockbusters?

It’s no secret that Hollywood is increasingly dominated by movies borne of 20th century imagination. Sequels, prequels, spinoffs and remakes are the order of the day, after all, and at the same time that the film industry is making fewer and fewer films, those comparatively small offerings are largely consumed by the success stories of yesteryear. This year alone has included The Predator, Halloween, Suspiria, Mary Poppins Returns, Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Christopher Robin and Creed II. Last year had Beauty and the Beast, Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi, Blade Runner 2049,

Tom Rothman Inks Multi-Year Contract Extension As Sony Motion Picture Group Chairman
Tom Rothman, who oversees all of Sony Pictures’ motion picture operations worldwide including Columbia Pictures, TriStar Pictures, Screen Gems, Sony Pictures Animation, Sony Pictures Classics and Sony Pictures Imageworks, has recently seen his contract re-upped in a multi-year deal.

Rothman came to the Culver City lot via 20th Century Fox in late 2013, where he served as the chairman of TriStar Pictures. In February 2015 he was named to his current role of chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group.

His contract renewal is well-deserved: He’s turned around the studio, with last year’s slate posting the highest ultimate profits in more than a decade. Rothman has continually been known as a studio boss who takes big risks on the screen at reasonable costs. During his tenure, he led his production, marketing and distribution teams to make Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, the studio’s highest-grossing movie in Columbia Pictures’ 100-year history.

The Blade Runner Franchise May Be Headed To Television

Unlike the replicants, it seems the world of Blade Runner and Blade Runner: 2049 (the original film’s commercially unsuccessful sequel) is truly destined to live forever. Both in the hearts of fans and across various forms of media as the years continue onward.

That is, if a new report turns out to be true.

According to an article posted on Roger Friedman’s Showbiz411 site, sources close to the former Hollywood Reporter correspondent say a television series set in the world of the two films is being developed on a fast track by producers associated with the franchise. While it does seem possible for Harrison Ford’s Deckard and/or Ryan Gosling’s K to appear on the show should it air, nothing is set in stone at this point.

In addition to in-flux casting and narrative choices, Friedman’s piece also notes series cinematographer Roger Deakins is unlikely to

The detective must then prove Helen is either innocent or guilty before the night is over, or her life will be.

Projects in the pipeline for de Armas include crime drama 'Three Seconds,' alongside Rosamund Pike; Danny Boyle's musical comedy based on the music of The Beatles; and 'The Night Clerk,' about a voyeuristic hotel clerk who becomes the subject of a murder investigation, which also stars Tye Sheridan and Helen Hunt.

Despite the Haters, The Last Jedi Is 2018's Biggest Selling Blu-ray

Despite the Haters, The Last Jedi Is 2018's Biggest Selling Blu-ray
Despite being the most divisive Star Wars movie in the history of the franchise,The Last Jedi is currently the best-selling Blu-ray of 2018. We're roughly three-quarters of the way through the year and, by a pretty wide margin, director Rian Johnson's entry in a galaxy far, far away is leading the pack with 3.02 million units sold. That means, divisive as it may have been, Lucasfilm is still raking in the dough.

Black Panther comes in at the number two spot with 2.62 million units sold. Though, it's arguable that Black Panther is just as successful, or close to it, as the Marvel Studios release hit Blu-ray in mid-May, whereas The Last Jedi hit shelves back in March. Trailing those two billion dollar blockbuster behemoths is another McU movie in the form of Thor: Ragnarok, with 2.34 million units sold so far in 2018.

The big takeaway here is that Disney is clearly

Exclusive Interview – Dave Bautista on Final Score, knowing nothing about football, Star Wars and whether John Cena is his acting rival

Tom Beasley sits down with gentle giant Dave Bautista to chat about his latest hardman-with-a comedic-wink role in football stadium terrorism thriller Final Score

The world knows better than to mess with Dave Bautista. The former WWE wrestler – a six-time world champion no less – has had an acting career dominated by musclebound badass roles, whether as Drax the Destroyer in Guardians of the Galaxy, as a bruising Replicant in Blade Runner 2049 or as a thorn in James Bond’s side in Spectre.

Big Dave’s latest big screen outing, Final Score, sees him play a military veteran taking a rare excursion to a football stadium, watching West Ham United play their last game at the Boleyn Ground with his friend’s daughter. Typically, terrorists have chosen precisely this evening to take charge of the stadium and plant explosives underneath the stands. It’s at this point, of course, that

Movie Review – King of Thieves (2018)

King of Thieves, 2018.

Directed by James Marsh.

Starring Michael Caine, Jim Broadbent, Tom Courtenay, Charlie Cox, Paul Whitehouse, Michael Gambon and Ray Winstone.

Synopsis:

A crew of retired crooks pull off a major heist in London’s jewellery district.

Though the famed Hatton Garden safe deposit burglary only took place back in April of 2015, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was far longer ago, what with this new dramatisation from James Marsh being already the third movie to take a stab at the material.

By far the best-produced of the three films, boasting an A-list cast and name director (The Theory of Everything‘s James Marsh), King of Thieves may be a disappointingly meat-and-potatoes retelling of the fascinating heist, but thanks to its gamely committed performers, it’s a lightly enjoyable ride for the most part. Sometimes that’s enough.

If you’re unfamiliar with the facts of the case,

‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’s Dave Bautista Signs With CAA

‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’s Dave Bautista Signs With CAA
Exclusive: Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista has signed with CAA. He had been with Gersh. For a mixed martial artist still establishing himself onscreen through his role as Drax in Guardians and turns in films Blade Runner 2049, Hotel Artemis, the 007 film Spectre and the Avengers: Infinity War sequels, Bautista has shown an admirable level of courage in speaking out against Disney’s firing of Guardians director James Gunn because of the filmmaker’s trail of sarcastic and indefensible old tweets that were exhumed and publicized by alt-right journalists. It has drawn Bautista, an emerging talent, a measure of respect in town.

Bautista recently wrapped the Fox action-comedy Stuber, starring opposite Kumail Nanjiani and he starts production on the Stx family action-comedy My Spy next month, which he is producing with manager Jonathan Meisner. He also starred in the indie Bushwick, which premiered at Sundance and Cannes.

Details on Danny Boyle's Upcoming Beatles-Inspired Musical Comedy

Now that Danny Boyle is no longer directing Bond 25, he's putting his focus on another film project he's been developing with screenwriter Richard Curtis.

According to Rolling Stone, the film will be a musical comedy that will tell the story of a singer-songwriter played by Himesh Patel (EastEnders) who wakes up one morning to discover that he’s the only person in the entire world who remembers The Beatles.

Musical artist Ed Sheeran will also be in the film and he will play himself. When talking to the Associated Press about his role in the story, he explains:

"I discover him and take him on tour. Then he gets much, much bigger than me through doing stuff. Yeah, it’s very clever."

I assume that means that Patel's character will build his fame on the songs of The Beatles that no one can remember except for him. This film sounds like it could be fun!
