The entire sequence during Monica's party (starting with the dancing partiers and ending when Oliver and Jacob leave with Laura) was shot in just one night. The sequence consists of twelve scenes (including both interior and exterior shots) totaling five and six-eighths script pages and more than twenty cast members.
The original script did not include the cougar sisters. But while holding auditions, the filmmakers met Dena Drotar and Devin Mills (who were auditioning for another project down the hall) and asked them to spontaneously read for a different character. They liked the actresses so much they rewrote the script and offered them the parts.
Aaron Lee Harvey and Ryan Stockstad both painted walls inside their apartments to facilitate shooting. A color scheme for walls, characters and wardrobe was agreed upon at the start which included blue for Oliver, purple for Mason and red for scenes of passion (such as the bedroom and Monica's party).
The decision to use a portable DAT recorder to record sound resulted in huge post-production delays when the filmmakers were unable to cheaply convert the audio to usable digital files. Sound editing wasn't completed until March 2011, a full 17 months after production wrapped.
