I decided on the spur of the moment, but I must say that films with submarines always fascinate me - when the sonar sounds, I hold my breath. Although it is a simple US action film, with beautiful shots, pathos and an ending that you can almost imagine, I liked it very much. I love submarine suspense, it has a lot to do with tactics and being trapped in such a "fish can" has the highest respect from my side. Of course such movies always remind me of "Das Boot" and especially when then areas have to be passed through where explosive devices are placed that react to every sound, I hold my breath with the crew.
Gerard Butler and Gary Oldman embodied their roles perfectly, and the rest of the cast was on point as well. I regret that Michael Nyqvist died shortly after filming this movie, as he delivered a solid supporting role and I was already a fan of his.
At 122 minutes long, the pacing was excellent and the time flew by. The twists and decisions, kept me on the edge of my seat with suspense.
The film aims to entertain and not be a war documentary. That's why I don't expect realistic realization in such films. I found the casting of the Russian president funny again.
Gerard Butler is of course the rock of the film. You know he's going to get you home, no matter what. Nevertheless, I also found the ending beautiful, somewhat emotional. Perfect camerawork, as well as the SFX, the setting, the editing and the sound all support the quality and were excellent, everything is coherent and fits together.
Unfortunately, the core idea of the story (in our current times) is not as far-fetched as one would like.
Those who enjoyed "Olympus Has Fallen" might also enjoy this film.

Outstanding - highly recommended.
