SNL's Anti-tv Host Bias: Insiders Try to Explain the Inexplicable
Casey Affleck is many things. A great actor is one of them; a household name is not. He’s certainly no Norman Reedus. Or Kristen Bell.

Saturday Night Live‘s decision to tap the Manchester By the Sea star to serve as the show’s final host of 2016 underscores a perplexing trend at the long-running late-night sketch show, one in which even marginally known movie stars are considered more viable hosting material than A-list TV talent.

‘Mr. Robot’ Episode Goes ’90s: Watch The Amazing Fake & Real Vintage Ads (That Only Aired Once)
[Editor’s Note: Spoilers follow for “Mr. Robot” Season 2, Episode 6, “eps2.4_m4ster-s1ave.aes.” (Full review here.)]

TV keeps making ostentatious plays for regaining live viewership (and, as a result, getting live eyeballs on ads). We’re never seen anything like this week, though, when USA’s “Mr. Robot” exploded the idea of what you can do with in-show advertising, and truly rewarded those who tuned in live.

Earlier in the day, creator Sam Esmail had tweeted out a warning that of all the episodes of “Mr. Robot” that have aired recently:

To our streaming viewers, you should watch tonight’s episode of #MrRobot live with the commercials. Trust me on this.

Sam Esmail (@samesmail) August 10, 2016

In this age of DVRing, it was a pretty big request (especially when you consider that “Mr. Robot” starts at 10pm and episodes often run over an hour). But once the episode began, Esmail’s reasons were clear.

Last week’s episode ended with Elliot (Rami Malek) experiencing a brutal beating

Why Will Arnett is the anti-Donald Trump that America needs

We need to subvert and undermine the man who might be our next president – and as a master of playing insecure egomaniacs, Arnett is uniquely suited to do it

Much like Bojack Horseman himself, Will Arnett is finally back on top. After Arrested Development made him a star, Arnett spent years trying to establish a follow-up. He wallowed in failed network sitcoms with names you probably won’t recognize such as Running Wilde, Up All Night and The Millers. He had a few moments in the spotlight, like his Emmy-nominated guest-starring role in 30 Rock as Jack Donaghy’s arch-nemesis. But Arnett struggled to find another role that traded on his unique combination of macho confidence and wounded sensitivity that made him the standout of Arrested Development, a show that was composed almost entirely of standouts.

Indie Spotlight: ‘Does This Baby Make Me Look Fat?’ Chronicles One Woman’s Pregnancy Adventures

Stephanie Jackson isn’t your typical indie web series creator. The Los Angeles-based actress tends to book roles as a mom in shows like Chuck and Up All Night.
