Spectacle has been essential to keeping moviegoing alive and pushing filmmaking forward, and the impact of VFX on the industry cannot be overstated. As major studios look for more avenues to entice audiences into theaters in this rapidly shifting world of technology, in which almost every form of entertainment is at our fingertips, the promise of breathtaking set pieces on the big screen remains one of the biggest selling points for audiences. Ideally, the best achievement in visual effects Oscar sets a bar in terms of what can be attained through technology, creativity, budget and audience investment.
As a result, the category differs from the others in that it suggests a measurable goal for productions to reach. If a blockbuster with dinosaurs can’t look at least as good as the industry-shifting visual effects on display in Jurassic Park (1993), then there’s still work to be done. Those same industry-shifting...

IndieWire invited the production VFX supervisors from the five Oscar-nominated films to choose and analyze a pivotal scene that best showcases their work: Paul Lambert (“Dune: Part Two”), Wētā FX’s Erik Winquist (“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”), Wētā FX’s Luke Millar (“Better Man”), Eric Barba (“Alien: Romulus”), and Ilm’s Pablo Helman (“Wicked”).
For Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part 2,” Lambert and his Oscar-winning “Dune” team from Dneg ramped up everything with much more visceral action. They once again used sand-colored VFX screens to integrate live-action footage with digital elements; they supplied CG enhancement to the 44-day SFX practical shoot of Paul (Timothée Chalamet) riding the sandworm for the first time; and they created more extensive views of the massive sandworms during battle with CG and practical effects.
Wes Ball’s “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” dives deeper into the now dominant ape civilization.

The use of AI in best picture contender “The Brutalist” recently grabbed headlines and ignited controversy, but it isn’t the only Oscar contender to use the advancing technology. High-profile films such as “A Complete Unknown,” “Dune: Part 2” and “Emilia Pérez” have also used AI in large or small ways, and the growing popularity has led the Motion Picture Academy to actively explore changing its Oscar submission requirements so that films would have to disclose their use of AI, Variety has learned.
The Academy currently offers an optional disclosure form for AI use, but Governors and Branch executive committees are now investigating how AI is used in each branch with an eye toward making disclosure mandatory in the 2026 Oscars rules, which are expected to be published in April. The Academy’s SciTech Council is working on recommended language, Variety has also learned.

Released just a few months after the 45th anniversary of Ridley Scott’s “Alien,” “Alien: Romulus” brings the franchise roaring back to life after a seven-year hiatus. Director and co-writer Fede Álvarez leveraged its complex mythology by staging his installment between the events of the original film and its 1986 follow-up “Aliens.” But just as important was Álvarez’ combining filmmaking techniques used on those earlier chapters with the most up-to-date technology available to deliver its many thrills — and in the process, to cement the series’ reputation as one of the great cinematic showcases for artisanal creativity.
In addition to a $350 million (and counting) worldwide box office haul to mark the success of the movie, Álvarez’ collaborators Eric Barba, Nelson Sepulveda-Fauser, Daniel Macarin and Shane Mahan received a collective Academy Award nomination for best visual effects. It’s an honor shared by four previous “Alien” films, and one that’s especially welcome...

He may be plotting another Alien film, but Fede Álvarez is hoping to make a classic slasher movie too. More on his comments below.
Director Fede Álvarez is currently doing the awards rounds in Hollywood with Alien: Romulus, the successful new entry into the decades old sci-fi horror franchise. Another instalment has already been confirmed and Álvarez has previously teased where it might go.
Talking to Collider at the Saturn Awards, Álvarez confessed there’s something else that is tickling his fancy when it comes to making more horror films.
“On the horror side I would love to do a good old slasher. I haven’t done that really. I mean I have possession movies with Evil Dead, sci-fi horror. A kind of classic slasher,” the director said.
As with Alien: Romulus, Evil Dead, Álvarez’s 2013 reboot/sequel to Sam Raimi’s classic 1981 feature saw the filmmaker dip his toes...

With films including Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe and Alien: Romulus under his belt, Fede Alvarez has established himself as a must-watch director in the horror space, with the Uruguayan filmmaker currently working on a planned sequel to Alien: Romulus. But what’s next for Alvarez beyond the Alien franchise? Well, he’d love to take a stab at a slasher film.
“On the horror side I would love to do a good old slasher,” Alvarez told Collider on the red carpet at the Saturn Awards over the weekend. “I haven’t done that really.”
He added, “A kind of classic slasher.”
While Alvarez did produce the 2022 version of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, he’s never fully dipped his toes into the slasher genre as a director. Both the Evil Dead and Alien franchises have slasher elements to them, with monsters tearing their way through victims, but it sounds like Alvarez is...

At the controversial intersection of graphic violence in pop culture and women’s liberation in politics, you’ll find the taboo and too often overlooked subgenre of feminist body horror. In 2025, Coralie Fargeat, Demi Moore, and Margaret Qualley are changing all that with “The Substance”: a triumphant all-timer that was nominated for five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director.
These extreme female-centric movies wield over-the-top gore and violence like exacting scalpels, peeling away society’s thick skin of deference and niceties to reveal an insidious underbelly of gendered violence, gendered shame, gendered betrayal, gendered hell. You’ll see flourishes of those themes in all kinds of movies, including last year’s “The First Omen” and “Alien: Romulus.” But movies like “The Substance” and Marielle Heller’s “Nightbitch” — starring Amy Adams as a young mom who shape-shifts into a dog — make a meal of them for their movie’s entire duration.

When John Carpenter‘s “They Live” was released in 1988, it became an instant favorite among sci-fi enthusiasts for its sly, scary tale of aliens controlling us via subliminal messages that could be consciously perceived only by wearing special sunglasses. Carpenter intended the film as a cautionary tale about the dangers of unrestrained capitalism, a theme that has only gained increased resonance in the 37 years since he made it.
The enduring popularity of “They Live” among genre fans has yielded a number of special edition releases on physical media over the years, and now there’s an especially enticing one for Carpenter aficionados looking to simulate the way they might have first experienced “They Live” back in the 1990s: a new widescreen VHS version from the UK’s Vice Press Home Video.

If the four-year gap between Frank Ocean’s debut studio album Channel Orange and his follow-ups Endless and Blonde felt long, it’s now been over double the wait to see if another album will ever materialize from the wunderkind artist. We now have a major update on Ocean’s creative output, but rather than a new album in the works, he’s started shooting his directorial debut.
Variety reports David Jonsson has landed the lead role of Ocean’s directorial debut, which Ocean also wrote and is now shooting in Mexico City. While no plot details have arrived, a bit more digging reveals the current title is Philly and shooting actually began in mid-December. As seen below, Ocean was also spotted in Mexico City this past summer shooting footage. Earlier rumors suggested A24 and Taylor Russell were involved in the project, but that has yet to be confirmed.

Director Fede Alvarez recently brought us a new installment in the Alien franchise with his movie Alien: Romulus, but we already have another new Alien project to look forward to. Fargo TV series creator Noah Hawley has been developing an Alien TV series for “FX on Hulu” for the last couple years, and below you’ll find Everything We Know About the Alien TV Series!
The Setting
One of the first things we heard about the Alien series – and one of the most surprising things about it – is that it will actually be set on Earth, a couple decades before the events of the first movie. FX chairman John Landgraf has said the show will take place “right near the end of this century”, and a late-2090s setting would place this between the prequel films Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. Hawley decided to set the show on Earth because “The alien stories are always trapped…...

2024 delivered an incredible lineup of horror films, including A Quiet Place: Day One, Abigail, Alien: Romulus, Heretic, MaXXXine, Trap, Smile 2, The Substance and Nosferatu. Yet, one movie from last year truly rose above the rest. That film is Longlegs, starring Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage. After leaving theaters, fans eagerly waited for its arrival on streaming. Now, that day is finally here.
Longlegs is now available to stream, but not for everyone. On Jan. 8, 2025, the smash-hit horror film became available to watch on Prime Video but only in select locations. Those locations are Prime Video in the U.K. and Ireland. With only these two locations having access at the moment, this leaves fans outside those regions in suspense. They're stuck having to resort to alternative methods to watch the film.
For example, the only way people in the U.S. can watch Longlegs is by renting or buying it on digital platforms.

The State of the Race
The Best Visual Effects nominees are “Alien: Romulus,” “Better Man,” “Dune: Part Two,” “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” and “Wicked.” While the race has been shaping up as a simian battle between “Kingdom” and “Better Man” (both from Wētā FX), “Dune: Part Two” has emerged as the favorite for its epic work, building off the Oscar-winning “Dune.” However, “Kingdom” is certainly deserving of the franchise’s first win. The biggest hurdle has been the acting branch’s dislike of performance capture.

The Alien franchise started waaaaaay back in 1979, and has had its ups and downs since then. It's been getting a bit of its groove back in recent years with movies like Alien: Covenant and most recently Alien: Romulus, which came out last year. FX and Hulu are going to try and keep that role going with Alien: Earth, the first-ever Alien TV series set to air sometime this summer.
That release window comes courtesy of the show's new teaser trailer, which you can watch above. There's not a whole lot to say about the trailer itself; we don't get much in the way of footage I imagine will appear in the actual show. We see things through the point of view of an alien xenomorph as it careers through a CGI spaceship and peers through a window to behold...Earth! Oh s*it, that's where we live!

Let me start off by saying I loved Deadpool & Wolverine. It was easily the best superhero movie of 2024 and rightfully earned every dollar it made. However, it does not deserve an Oscar nomination.
The possible categories Deadpool & Wolverine had any chance for being nominated for could have been nominated for are Best Picture, Actor in a Leading Role, Actress in a Supporting Role, Writing (Adapted Screenplay), and Visual Effects. The rest, it had no chance of receiving a nomination for.
Below are the nominations for all the categories Deadpool & Wolverine could have been part of. If you’re already familiar with the nominations, feel free to skip the informative bit.
The nominations for Best Picture with a few expected nominations are Anora, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, I’m Still Here, Nickel Boys, The Substance, and Wicked.

Marvel Studios' Midnight Sons movie may have suffered a setback with the departure of a reliable hand to pen the script for the planned supernatural team-up.
We got word that Michael Green had been enlisted to write Midnight Sons last summer, but according to scooper Mttsh, his "take didn't click" and he has now parted ways with the project. Marvel is said to be searching for a replacement.
Green wrote the original script for the long-awaited Blade reboot, and has also worked on the likes of Netflix's Blue Eye Samurai, Kenneth Branagh’s Hercule Poirot trilogy, Blade Runner 2049 and Logan.
It's important to keep in mind that a Midnight Sons movie has yet to be officially announced - although we'd say Marvel Studios assembling their supernatural characters for a team-up at some point is inevitable.

In this age of streaming entertainment, viewers' criteria for what qualifies as a multiplex-worthy movie has changed dramatically. Generally, a film has to be a four-quadrant tentpole or a family-friendly animated piffle (preferably with a toy or video game tie-in) to get people out of their houses. Comedies are no longer a safe play, nor are adult-skewing dramas. Small-scale films in general are typically viewed on the couch as a second-screen distraction. Horror movies, however, are typically an exception.
Whether they're big studio productions like "Nosferatu," "A Quiet Place: Day One," and "Alien: Romulus," or more modestly scaled indie efforts like "Longlegs," "Terrifier 3," and "Talk to Me," moviegoers (mostly of the younger variety) will show up on opening weekend provided the hook is well-baited. They don't need stars, and they certainly don't need ecstatic early word from critics (lamentably); all they desire are a few good scares, some creepy atmosphere,...

Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Thor: Ragnarok, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and now Deadpool & Wolverine. These are some of the fantastic Marvel Cinematic Universe productions with exquisite visual effects, that have not been nominated for Best Visual Effects Oscars in their respective years.
Even before the Academy Awards ceremony occurs on March 2, any hopes that the MCU could snatch up its first Oscar in this category were crushed when Deadpool & Wolverine failed to receive a Visual Effects nod. The nominations went to Alien: Romulus, Better Man, Dune 2, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and Wicked. Although Marvel Studios works with the best technical artists in the business, there is always top-notch competition every year, making their winless streak slightly justifiable. But this year does not particularly have one of the stronger lists of candidates.

The recent rumor that the next Alien movie might be set to bring back Sigourney Weaver to play a de-aged Ellen Ripley was met with a mixture of excitement and trepidation from fans of the classic sci-fi horror franchise, but it seems we won't be seeing the iconic heroine in action again after all - at least, not in the Romulus sequel.

When it comes to this year’s Oscar nominations, the love was spread across the distributor scoreboard, from legacy Hollywood studios and their specialty divisions, to streamers and maverick indie distributors.
Netflix walked away with the most of any individual distributor on Tuesday with a total of 16 nods after Emilia Pérez landed a spot in 13 categories, the most of any film this year and setting a new record for a non-English-language film. And it’s just one shy of the all-time record for any film (All About Eve, Titanic and La La Land each landed 14).
Next up on the Academy’s scorecard of top-nominated individual distributors was powerhouse A24 with 14, including 10 for The Brutalist. The movie, which swept the Golden Globes, will use its front-runner status as it continues to expand in theaters, where it has earned a promising $5.9 million despite only playing in several hundred cinemas to date.

Director Fede Alvarez’s contribution to the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus (you can read our review Here), was a success – so it was no surprise to hear, just a couple of months after the film’s theatrical release, that 20th Century Studios was working with Alvarez to develop a sequel to the film. Now, Alvarez has had to address a rumor that Alien franchise heroine Ripley, who was played by Sigourney Weaver in the first four films, might return for the Alien: Romulus sequel.
The rumor started with industry scooper Daniel Richtman, who reported, “For the next Alien movie, they’re considering bringing back Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) using de-aging technology.” Alvarez quickly took to social media to debunk the rumor, writing, “Fun gossip. But not true at all.” So don’t expect to see a de-aged Ripley show up in the Alien: Romulus sequel.

Another day, and another pernicious movie-related rumor has been making the rounds. This time, word began to buzz that 20th Century Studios was "considering" the idea of bringing back acclaimed actor and franchise star Sigourney Weaver to reprise her legendary role as Ellen Ripley in the still-unconfirmed sequel to "Alien: Romulus." This latest report came courtesy of scooper Daniel Richtman (also known by his social media handle DanielRPK) in a recent Patreon post exclusively available to subscribers, claiming that the powers that be were looking into the use of widely prevalent de-aging technology in order to make this version of Ripley period-accurate, as "Romulus" took place roughly 20 years after the events of the original "Alien" movie.
Well, consider this rumor squashed. No less an authority than "Romulus" director and co-writer Fede Álvarez confirmed as much in a post made on X (the website/app formerly and still popularly known as...

It’s a big day for the Alien franchise, with Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus officially receiving an Oscar nomination this morning for Best Visual Effects. But that wasn’t the only Alien news for today, as rumors began swirling earlier this afternoon that Alvarez and company are looking to bring Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley back to the screen for the sequel to Romulus.
The rumor originated from scooper Daniel Richtman. He writes, “For the next Alien movie, they’re considering bringing back Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) using de-aging technology.”
Is there any truth to the rumor? Well, Fede Alvarez himself has taken to Twitter to completely debunk the report. “Fun gossip,” he responds to the rumor. “But not true at all.”
We do know that Alvarez and co-writer Rodo Sayagues are indeed developing a sequel to Alien: Romulus, with the film expected to center on the two survivors of...

Thanks to Robert Eggers' vampire film "Nosferatu" and Coralie Fargeat's "The Substance," horror had a surprisingly strong showing at the 2025 Oscar nominations. But instead of resting on his laurels and high-fiving Bill Skarsgård for delivering a gruesomely fresh take on the horror icon Count Orlok, Eggers has already set his sights on a new movie, the excellently-named 13th century werewolf tale "Werwulf." Oh, and if that wasn't enough to keep him working for a while, Deadline reports that he's also now closed a deal with TriStar pictures to co-write and direct a sequel to "Labyrinth."
The original 1986 "Labyrinth" is a marvel. The Jim Henson movie rolls out amazing sights and sounds as it tells us about Sarah's (Jennifer Connelly) quest to retrieve her brother (Toby Froud) from the clutches of Jareth the Goblin King. It's a creature fest, musical, fantasy film, and a bona fide classic -- and since Eggers...

“Emilia Pérez” and “Wicked” emerged January 23 as the two Oscar craft juggernauts, scoring seven nominations apiece and setting up a battle of the musicals at the 97th Academy Awards on March 2. This matches the seven craft nominations of last year’s eventual Best Picture winner “Oppenheimer.”
Jacques Audiard’s operatic thriller “Emilia Pérez” grabbed cinematography (Paul Guillaume), makeup and hairstyling, editing (Juliette Welfling), score (Clément Ducol and Camille), sound, and two original songs (“El Mal” by Clément Ducol and Camille and Audiard and “Mi Camino” by Camille and Ducol).
Jon M. Chu’s populist blockbuster “Wicked” captured costume design (Paul Tazewell), production design, makeup and hairstyling, editing (Myron Kerstein), sound, score (John Powell and Stephen Schwartz), and VFX.
Sharing four noms were “The Brutalist,” “Conclave,” “Dune: Part Two,” and “Nosferatu.”
Brady Corbet’s post-Holocaust immigrant drama “The Brutalist” nabbed cinematography (Lol Crawley in retro VistaVision), production design, editing (David Jancso...

Robert Eggers reminds me of the babe. What babe? The babe with the power to finally, at long last, bring a sequel to Jim Henson‘s Labyrinth into the world! A day after announcing his Werwulf film project for Focus Features and Nosferatu coming to digital platforms, Robert Eggers confirms he’s writing and directing a Labyrinth sequel for TriStar Pictures. I am freaking the f**k out, friends. Labyrinth is one of my favorite films of all time, and the thought of Eggers taking the reins for a sequel to Jim Henson’s 1986 classic fantasy film is giving me life!
Plot details for Eggers’s Labyrinth sequel remain more mysterious than Jareth’s magnificent package, though sources say the film is a sequel, not a remake, to Henson’s timeless, puppet-populated masterpiece. Eggers will write the script with Sjón, his writing partner for 2022’s The Northman. The duo is...

We’re sorry, Marvel fans, but calling Deadpool & Wolverine’s Oscar shutout a “snub” might be pushing it. Sure, the movie brought the laughs, action, and Ryan Reynolds-Hugh Jackman banter we all live for, but let’s be real, was it ever aiming for golden statues?

The Oscars love groundbreaking, artsy, or jaw-dropping cinema, and while this flick delivered epic fun, it wasn’t exactly rewriting the rulebook.
Marvel’s crowd-pleaser misses the mark: Deadpool & Wolverine snubbed at the Oscars A still from Deadpool & Wolverine | Credits: Marvel Studios
Despite Marvel’s major 2024 box-office success with Deadpool & Wolverine, the Oscars weren’t feeling generous.
The 97th Academy Awards nominations dropped, and the Phase 5 blockbuster didn’t score a single nod – not even in Visual Effects, a category where it seemed like a shoo-in. Instead, Alien: Romulus, Better Man,...

The 2025 Oscar nominations have arrived. This year’s Academy Awards offer a few interesting firsts; Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón made history as the first trans actress to be nominated for Lead Actress, while Timothée Chalamet (our 2024 Film Performer of the Year) became the youngest two-time Lead Actor nominee since the one and only James Dean.
Other big winners include The Brutalist and audience favorite Wicked, which yielded nominations for both its stars, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. Elsewhere, a number of pleasant surprises (Nickel Boys in Best Picture!) and head-scratching snubs (the Challengers shutout) confirm that The Academy will always remain somewhat difficult to pin down.
As Oscar season officially hits full swing, we’ve rounded up where to find every film nominated at this year’s ceremony, from box office successes to tender documentaries and shorts. The winners of the 2025 Academy Awards will be announced on March 2nd,...
