In actuality, Maria outlived her bad boy husband, and lived until 1539 when she died in Gandia. At one point following the death of Pope Alexander VI (Rodrigo Borgia), Maria and her aunt-in-law (the famous) Queen Isabella attempted to have murder charges brought against Cesare Borgia, whom they believed murdered Juan.
