In the first season, Zooey Deschanel (Jess) and Jake Johnson (Nick) were directed to have as little physical contact as possible. This is because their chemistry was thought to be too distracting.
Zooey Deschanel and Damon Wayans Jr. went to high school together.
Damon Wayans Jr. was originally a cast member playing the character of Coach. Wayans was expecting his series, Happy Endings (2011), to be canceled. But when that series was renewed, Wayans was unable to continue with this series after the pilot. He was replaced with Lamorne Morris as Winston. After Happy Endings (2011) was canceled, Wayans was able to return to this series in the third season.
Prince guest starred in a 2014 episode named after him. He also made a duet with star of the show, Zooey Deschanel, titled "FALLINLOVE2NITE" which premiered on the show.
In spite of playing the lead and titular character, Zooey missed 6 episodes in season 5 due to pregnancy.
Peter Gallagher plays Schmidt's father on the show. In The O.C., Max Greenfield (Schmidt) played the younger version of Peter Gallagher's character, Sandy Cohen.
Amanda Bynes was considered for the role of Jess, which eventually went to Zooey Deschanel.
Damon Wayan's character goes by Coach, but his first name is Ernie. This is just like on the television show Cheers with Nicholas Colosanto's character who also goes by Coach with first name Ernie.

During season 2 episode 16, Schmidt thanks India for Kal Penn. In season 5, Kal Penn plays a recurring character.
All the male actors have played police officers. Lamorne Morris (Winston) on New Girl (2011), Max Greenfield (Schmidt) on Veronica Mars (2004), Jake Johnson (Nick) and Damon Wayans Jr. (Coach) in Let's Be Cops (2014) and Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013).
Both Katie Cassidy and Stephen Amell were guest stars in the first season. They both went on to become stars of Arrow (2012).

In two episodes, you can see Winston and Schmidt laughing out of turn at something that Coach had said or improvised.
Nick (Jake Johnson) has said that he doesn't believe in dinosaurs. Johnson later played a supporting role in Jurassic World (2015).
Windows can be seen in Nick's room as well as Winston's, but that is not realistic since the floor plan of the loft should have Nick's room sharing a wall with the hall and Winston's room sharing a wall with the hall and another loft since it's in the corner of the loft.
If one pays close enough attention to the characters in the background, they might catch the actors laughing out of turn.
In one of the episodes, Jess (Zooey Deschanel) is doing impressions and starts to do one of Dr. Frasier Crane. She appeared on the show Frasier years earlier as character Roz Doyle's cousin.
Nick Miller (Jake Johnson) has a poster on his bedroom wall in the loft, of JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound. Jake Johnson actually plays the lead character in the band's video for Rouse Yourself 2013 along with Aubrey Plaza.
Jerrod Carmichael was offered the part of Winston but turned it down to focus on his stand-up career.
Nick has a tour poster for the popular blues-rock band "The Black Keys" hanging on his bedroom door.
Justin Long plays a character with the last name of Genzlinger which is the same last name as one of the directors on the show Bones, which stars Zooey Deschanel's sister, Emily Deschanel.
Brian Posehn plays a biology/earth science teacher in multiple episodes of New Girl. He also plays Bert, a doctor of Geology, on Big Bang Theory.
In one episode Jess starts to give Nick the PIN code for her ATM card, which begins with 4 and 2. Zooey played Trillian in "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" which is based on a series of books in which the number 42 plays a significant role.

In season two when Sam breaks up with Jess, she cries on the couch and says she just wants to listen to Taylor Swift songs. Taylor Swift later appears in an episode playing a character and not herself.
David Walton played Jess's boyfriend, Sam, who we find out is a children's doctor. In 2014, David was given his own show, About a Boy (2014), in which his character dates a children's doctor named Dr. Sam.
Both Zooey Deschanel and Jake Johnson have portrayed school principals. Johnson played Principal Dadier in 21 Jump Street (2012) while Deschanel became a Vice-Principal in the 3rd season of New Girl (2011) and a Principal in the 6th season.
