‘Roma’ and ‘A Star Is Born’: Opposites Attract Early Oscar Season Love
At the start of a new Oscar season, two films lead the pack that could not be more different in every way.

Academy Award-winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón’s Venice prizewinner “Roma” was ripped from the director’s childhood memories, shot in beautiful black-and-white with a cast of unknowns and will be presented by Netflix, the biggest streaming company in the world. Bradley Cooper’s rousing debut crossover success “A Star Is Born,” meanwhile, builds on an 80-year-old Hollywood classic, is led by a global recording superstar and is distributed by Warner Bros., the only major Hollywood studio to win a best-picture Oscar in the last 16 years.

It’s an apt note on which to begin this year’s 91st annual proceedings, a time when a diverse range of themes is particularly prized: the foreign-born art-house delicacy from a veteran, versus the hit-soundtrack-accompanied box office smash from a movie-star-turned-director. And sure

Mahershala Ali knocks Timothee Chalamet out of top spot in Experts’ Best Supporting Actor Oscar predictions
There’s a new Best Supporting Actor Oscar frontrunner — among our Experts at least. “Green Book” star Mahershala Ali has toppled Timothee Chalamet (“Beautiful Boy”) to become the top pick of our top industry pundits.

While Chalamet is still ahead of Ali in our combined odds between our Experts, Editors and Top 24 Users, Ali has the support of 10 of our 25 Experts to nine for Chalamet. The remaining six are split between “A Star Is Born”‘s Sam Elliott, who has two votes, Richard E. Grant (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?”), Adam Driver (“BlacKkKlansman”), Michael B. Jordan (“Black Panther”) and Daniel Kaluuya (“Widows”).

Chalamet has been the favorite all season for his performance as the meth addict son of Steve Carell, but he’s been losing ground in recent weeks, as support for the likes of Ali, Elliott and Grant has risen following their films’ premieres.

Oscars Best Picture race: ‘A Star is Born’ and ‘Roma’ remain tied for lead with 7/1 odds
A Star is Born” and “Roma” lead the Best Picture race according to the predictions of the 25 Oscar Experts at Gold Derby. Bradley Cooper‘s remake of the Hollywood classic has the backing of 13 of our industry insiders while 11 are forecasting a win for Alfonso Cuaron‘s family drama. Tim Gray of Variety is predicting that “Black Panther” will pull off an upset.

  • Deadline
Vue International, one of the world’s leading exhibitors, is delaying plans to open 30 multiplexes in Saudi Arabia in the wake of the Jamal Khashoggi murder, Deadline has confirmed. Earlier this month, Deadline sources said multiple cinema chains were putting their plans on hold until they had more clarity on the situation.

In an interview with The Guardian, Vue chief Tim Richards said the company he founded has “delayed, but not pulled out. We are like a lot of leading companies around the world; we are watching and share the concerns that others do. This has all happened very quickly. We want to see what happens in the next few weeks and don’t want to make any knee-jerk reactions.”

Richards last year attended the Future Investment Initiative, and shortly afterwards, Deadline broke the news that Vue was interested in making moves in the Kingdom. This is the same summit

Choice Of Sharp New Oscar Producing Team Gives The Academy A Chance For Serious & Successful Makeover: Analysis

Well, the mystery of who gets the enviable — or unenviable — job of producing the 91st annual Academy Awards, airing February 24 on ABC, has been answered. And in choosing Oscar winner and multiple nominee Donna Gigliotti as producer and live TV and awards show veteran Glenn Weiss as “co-producer,” as well as director for the fourth consecutive year, Academy President John Bailey and CEO Dawn Hudson have assembled a strong team that should be well-equipped to deliver what is markedly going to be a bit of a re-invention. That includes an ironclad pledge to bring the show in at three hours and no more, as well as presenting some categories in a radically different way than in the past.

Bailey has indicated to me in the past that if he were re-elected for his second and final term (he was), he’d want to do a rather radical makeover of the show,

Director Shortlist For Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 Has Leaked

Just today, a report started making the rounds that the bulk of directors being eyed for the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 are female, and now we’re getting word from SuperBroMovies of some of the names up for consideration.

One of the most famous filmmakers on this list is Jane Campion, creator of the acclaimed series Top of the Lake and director of 1993’s Academy Award-winning The Piano. For a talent you’d more closely associate with franchise fare, however, there’s also S.J. Clarkson, whose résumé includes episodes of Jessica Jones, as well as the upcoming Star Trek 4. In other words, she’s a stranger to neither Marvel nor space travel.

Also on the list is Dee Rees, who’s been earning plaudits this decade for dramas like Mudbound and Pariah, and has recently been working with the likes of Anne Hathaway, Willem Dafoe, and Ben Affleck

Why Rihanna Saying No to the Super Bowl Matters (Column)
From the moment news broke that Maroon 5 was to be this year’s Super Bowl halftime show headliner, it seemed clear that there was something more afoot. After all, this is a performance that typically is viewed by even more people who tune into the game itself. And that game is TV’s marquee event of the year, the one remaining broadcast with the extant power to bring together viewers of all stripes, if only to take in the spectacle. The artists booked usually bring a bit of spectacle themselves. While taking nothing away from the success Adam Levine and his band have enjoyed, there’s a bit of a differential in star wattage between the frontman seen on every episode of “The Voice” and incandescent past Super Bowl stars like Madonna, or Katy Perry, or Bruno Mars, or Beyoncé (twice!).

Or Rihanna. The megastar, whose profile certainly suits that
