A History of Short-Lived Shows That Tried to Premiere After ‘American Idol’

In its prime, “American Idol” was a show that made gold from pretty much everything it came in contact with on Fox. At the height of its power, it made household names out of the people sitting in the judges’ chairs and competing every week. It also saw ratings so astronomical that it became a coveted lead-in for a variety of shows. New series, returning favorites, and newly-minted hits all enjoyed the slot right after “Idol” on the Fox schedule, through its various seasons and placements.

“24,” The O.C.,” “Bones,” “Fringe,” “Glee,” and “Empire” all benefited from the “Idol” bump, either at the beginning of their runs or on their own respective ascents. And you could make the argument that shows like “Til Death,” “Lie to Me,” and even “Human Target” — shows that didn’t have mammoth success — still stayed on the air longer than they would have, were it

A Warning for Broadcast TV: When There Are Too Many Shows to Watch, Generic Titles Like ‘Deception’ Just Don’t Cut It

  • Indiewire
ABC just premiered its latest twist on the cop procedural format — a pretty fun show starring Jack Cutmore-Scott as Cameron Black, a stage magician who decides to use his talents to help the FBI solve crimes while also investigating a mystery of his own.

A magician doing illusions to solve crime is a fresh twist on the genre, Cutmore-Scott is a charming lead, the supporting cast is fantastic, and the magic seen in the pilot is really cool. But what’s this show titled? “Deception.”

That’s right, “Deception” — not to be mistaken for the 1946 film starring Bette Davis and Claude Reine, the 2008 film starring Ewan McGregor and Hugh Jackman, the 2013 NBC series about a lady detective investigating her childhood best friend’s murder, or countless other low-budget films over the years. “Deception” is a one-word title so generic and bland that by the end of this sentence, you’ll

In Touch magazine has exclusively learned that the Counting On couple is expecting baby No. 3, and it's coming much sooner than you would think... like in four months! “Jessa is definitely pregnant and will be making an announcement in April,” a source told In Touch, adding that the reality star, 25, is about four months along. Normally Duggars are thrilled to announce a baby as soon as possible, so why are they still keeping it quiet four months in? Ben and Jessa “have been keeping the news under wraps, partly because it was in the early stages and also because she did not want to take away from the news that her brother Josiah [Duggar] and Lauren [Swanson] are getting married," explained the source. That's actually super sweet.

Dennis Lehane's Gone Baby Gone is Getting a TV Series Adaptation

Fox is developing a new TV series based on author Dennis Lehane's 1998 novel Gone Baby Gone. This would be the second time the story has been adapted. Back in 2007, Casey Affleck and Michelle Monaghan starred in the Ben Affleck directed film.

I thought the movie was great but it's not hard to imagine the story being adapted into a series. A series will give more of an opportunity to explore the characters more in depth and tell different stories involving the two characters.

Fox has ordered a pilot episode and it will be written by Robert Levine (Black Sails, Touch, Human Target, Judging Amy. Lehane will serve as an executive producer on the project, the story of which revolves around private detectives Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro who, "armed with their wits, street knowledge and undeniable chemistry, right the wrongs that the law can't in a working-class Boston borough of Dorchester.

Insights: High Tech, High Touch, & How To Keep The Human In An Algorithmic World

YouTube announced this week that, in digging out from the Adpocalypse, it would hire 10,000 people to monitor all the problematic content that we humans keep posting there. Earlier this year, after Facebook’s own content debacles, it said it would hire 4,000 additional human content cops.

Both announcements are reminders that as more of our lives are powered by artificial intelligence and digital assistants and nifty algorithms that serve up just the entertainment and news and services that we think we want, we’re still going to need real people.

And I suspect the need for human engagement will only increase for years to come, and not just for the Duopolists. Everyone else is trying to figure out how to thrive in a Facebook/Google universe. Given the direction many publishers and creators are headed, it looks like thriving online also will depend on thriving more offline.

All of this brings

[Editor’s note: Light spoilers for the premiere episode of “Kevin (Probably) Saves the World” follow.]

And then there’s “Kevin (Probably) Saves the World,” the ABC drama airing Tuesday nights, which doesn’t fit neatly into any box in particular. The official synopsis, per ABC:

Kevin Finn (Jason Ritter) is not a good person. He’s not terrible, but he’s selfish, and clueless, and values material wealth and status over all else. And he’s beginning to realize that those things aren’t making him happy – in fact, he’s fairly miserable. Just when things seem to be at their worst, he finds himself tasked with an unbelievable mission… saving the world…
