When Orwell goes to the sanitarium to meet the nurse who has given her a tip, she introduces herself as Carrie Woodhouse. Carrie Woodhouse is the real name of the title character from the semi-fictional historical novel "Carrie Woodlawn" by Carol Ryrie Brink.
Conrad claims his skin condition is "Morgellons Leiche" AKA "skin of the dead". There is a genetic disorder 'skin of the dead' called Ichthyosis Vulgaris where the inability to shed dead skin cells causes a thickened scaly pattern that looks like what Scales has. Morgellons disease was a hot topic when this show was made. However a thorough study by the CDC concluded that Morgellons is a delusional disorder and not a physical disease.
After the series was canceled, Jennifer Ferrin and Tom Noonan would both appear in Hell on Wheels (2011), however they were only credited at the same time in Bleeding Kansas (2014).
