In may, ABC News’ Lincoln Square Prods. decided against submitting John Ridley’s “Let It Fall: 1982-1992” for Primetime Emmy consideration. The reason? The television company hoped that the 140-minute docu, which tackles the 1992 Los Angeles riots, would receive feature film recognition via the Academy Awards. Oscar consultants concluded that a pre-existing Emmy profile could potentially hurt the doc’s chances at a little gold man.

ABC’s decision to forgo a possible Primetime Emmy in favor of Oscar glory wasn’t exactly surprising.

Oscar is the entertainment industry’s most esteemed accolade, and AMPAS recognition represents a coveted chance for not only the highest form of industry peer recognition, but also mainstream audience attention — a feat rarely achieved in the nonfiction film world.

The seven-minute film pieces together archival footage from 1939 to create a first-hand look at a Nazi rally at New York’s Madison Square Garden which attracted 22,000 Americans. The rally is rarely mentioned in the history books, making Marshall’s account a true dark and chilling revelation.

The film included conversations with former Elf members, mainstream environmental activists, arson victims and the law enforcement team that sent the Elf members to prison. But that word always made me wince. I didn't intend the film to be balanced; I intended it to be fair. The Top 25 Oscar Documentary Snubs of the Past 30 Years

After narrowing the Oscar documentary feature shortlist to five at the 87th Academy Award nominations Jan. 15, a number of notable exclusions were featured, particularly Al Hicks‘ Keep on Keepin’ On, which documents the mentorship and friendship of a jazz legend and a blind piano prodigy, and Steve James‘ Life Itself, about the life and career of famed film critic Roger Ebert. (James is no stranger to snubs and the exclusion of his 1994 film Hoop Dreams led to rule reform within the documentary category.) Both films hold 97 percent positive ratings on Rotten Tomatoes.

Some films surprised when they didn’t even land a spot on the shortlist, such as Red Army, which examines the rise and fall of the Soviet Union’s hockey team from the perspective of its coach. That film holds a 100 percent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

2015 Sundance Film Festival Predictions: Yance Ford’s Strong Island

There is nothing new in the subject matters covered in Yance Ford’s debut. Gun violence. Authorities taking a blind eye approach. A family and community torn. Pretty much sight unseen (although a peak at the trailer helps), I’d be surprised if I’ll personally be able to withstand the emotionally walloping that Strong Island promises to deliver. Forget about dry eyes. We’ve been anticipating this docu since we first heard of the person (Filmmaker Mag’s Scott Macaulay Top 25 Faces profile), and ever since then, it’s been collecting massive support from the Sundance Institute, Cinereach, Idfa Forum and just last month, a major helping hand from the MacArthur Foundation Documentary Grant. We’re wishful that this lands at the top of ’15.

Gist: Tracing the impacts of the 1992 shooting death of William Ford, Jr., an unarmed African American, and the devastation of the Ford family when his killer goes unpunished.

Film Review: ‘Point and Shoot’
Matthew VanDyke was a naive, adventure-driven videographer with Ocd when he went to North Africa without a word of Arabic, searching for his manhood. He became buddies with a Libyan guy, and when Libya’s revolution broke out, he picked up a gun alongside his camera and fought with his friend. Gaddafi fell, VanDyke came home triumphant, the end. Never mind that the Libyan civil war still rages — we’ve got an American to celebrate. Just like the U.S.’ deeply flawed foreign policy, Marshall Curry’s “Point and Shoot” sees the world through a lens of American exceptionalism, though such a p.o.v. hasn’t hampered fest recognition.

Tribeca’s feature documentary prize confirms there’s an audience for this story of a low-key guy from Baltimore overcoming psychological handicaps to become his own version of Lawrence of Arabia. A healthy arthouse tour confirms its appeal, which will be furthered by PBS play.

Oscilloscope has reached its first agreement with Amazon to stream 20 titles through the Prime Instant Video service.

The pact also makes Amazon the exclusive streaming subscription home for four of the indie distributor’s titles: “We Need to Talk About Kevin,” “Stand Clear of the Closing Doors,” “The Human Scale” and dirt-bike documentary “12 O’Clock Boys.”

Tribeca Winner ‘Point and Shoot’ Gets U.S. Distribution
The Orchard has acquired U.S. theatrical and digital rights to Marshall Curry’s documentary “Point and Shoot,” which won the documentary Grand Jury Prize at the Tribeca Film Festival.

The film follows Matthew VanDyke, a 27-year-old with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, who leaves his home in Baltimore and sets off on a self-described “crash course in manhood” through the Middle East. He struck a friendship with a Libyan hippie, joined his friend in the fight against dictator Muammar Gaddafi, was captured by Gaddafi forces and held in solitary confinement for six months.

The film will be released theatrically by The Orchard in U.S. markets this fall, and on digital platforms early next year.

Curry has been nominated for Oscars for “Street Fight” and “If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front.”

In a joint effort to recognize the importance of career and creative sustainability, Ifp and Durga Entertainment have partnered on a new $20,000 filmmaker grant for an alumnus of Ifp. The grant is intended for active, working filmmakers who are also balancing a filmmaking career with parenting. The grant provides a $20,000 unrestricted prize to encourage the recipient to continue on her or his career path of making quality independent films. American directors or screenwriters working in narrative film who have participated in the Ifp Filmmaker Labs or Ifp Independent Film Week's Emerging Storytellers or No-Borders International Co-Production market are encouraged to apply by the deadline of August 8, 2014.

Documentary Community Embraces Tribeca Fest
Documentaries “Street Fight,” “Jesus Camp,” “Which Way Home” and “Taxi to the Dark Side” have two things in common: Oscar nominations (which “Taxi” would go on to win) and world premieres at the Tribeca Film Festival.

It’s no secret the majority of docs that garner Academy recognition debut at Sundance or Toronto. But in recent years Tribeca has stepped up its game and become a top-tier doc showcase.

Since 2010, five Tribeca doc debuts — “Under Our Skin,” “Soundtrack for a Revolution,” “Semper Fi: Always Faithful,” “Bully” and “Which Way Home” — made the Oscar shortlist.

This year, the fest introduces 12 docs via its World Documentary competition. These include “1971,” a pre-WikiLeaks story about Vietnam-era activists; “Misconception,” a look at the consequences of population growth; and “Regarding Susan Sontag,” focusing on the seminal cultural critic and writer.

F For Fake…Oscilloscope Grab “Art and Craft” Prior to Tribeca Film Fest Premiere

If Tim’s Vermeer found traces of lenses and mirrors in the painting process, Sam Cullman and Jennifer Grausman’s Art and Craft looks to set aside the smoke and mirrors of the undertaking. Deadline reports that Oscilloscope, a distrib co. that pretty much works with a 50/50 fiction/non-fiction slate, acquired the rights to the doc just prior to its Tribeca Film Fest showing and will put the film out theatrically later in the year.

Gist: Following a prolific (and still-active) art forger who donates his work to museums instead of selling it, Art and Craft uncovers a curious story of obsession and understanding at the intersection of art, philanthropy and mental health.

Worth Noting: Previous creds for Cullman include the Oscar-nominated co-director of 2011′s If A Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front (see trailer below), and in the Jennifer Grausman camp, she directed the Emmy-nominated Pressure Cooker.

Tribeca: Art Forgery Documentary Gets Distribution

Oscilloscope Laboratories has acquired North American rights to art forgery documentary “Art and Craft,” which world premieres next month at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Oscilloscope plans a theatrical release for the late summer and early fall for the film that is produced and directed by Sam Cullman and Jennifer Grausman.

The film centers on Mark Landis, perhaps the most prolific art forger in U.S. history. While he could fetch millions of dollars on the open market, he donates his counterfeits for free.

Cullman previously co-directed the Oscar-nominated documentary “If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front,” which was also released by Oscilloscope. Grausman is the director of the documentary “Pressure Cooker.”

Executive producers are Lisa Kleiner Chanoff and Bonni Cohen of Catapult Film Fund and Christopher Clements, Julie Goldman and Carolyn Hepburn of Motto Pictures.

The 85th Annual Academy Awards took place Sunday in Los Angeles, with "Searching for Sugar Man" taking the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature.

Malik Bendjelloul directed "Sugar Man," which bested "The Gatekeepers," "5 Broken Cameras," "How to Survive a Plague," and "The Invisible War" for the award.

"Sugar Man," a big pre-awards favorite, tells the nearly unbelievable true story of Sixto Rodriguez. The Detroit native left music behind for construction jobs, all while being a cult figure in South Africa, where his music was revered alongside the likes of The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. The rediscovery of Rodriguez -- and his eventual comeback -- provide the base for Bendjelloul's sweetheart documentary.

Rodriguez has since lined up multiple gigs and eagerly made the media rounds since his film saw its American premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Hey, You Made It!
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences brings you the Oscars (yep, that's why they're called Academy Awards), and on Friday, the organization announced that it was prepared to invite 176 new folks to its fold.

In a list posted on its website, the Academy deemed Matthew McConaughey, Jean Dujardin, Terrence Malick, Jonah Hill, Berenice Bejo, Jessica Chastain, Octavia Spencer and a host of other film luminaries worthy of inclusion in its nearly 6,000-member army.

The Academy has drawn the ire of critics who bemoan its overwhelmingly male, white population. A Los Angeles Times investigation found that of all Academy members, 94 percent are Caucasian and 77 percent are male. A mere 2 percent are black, with Latinos constituting an even smaller portion. Only 14 percent of members are under the age of 50.

Full members of the Academy select and vote on Oscars nominees. The organization was started in 1927 and is now governed by a 43-person board.

Terrence Malick, who somehow wasn’t already a member, received an invitation, as did fellow directors Rodrigo Garcia and Asghar Farhadi.

For actors, Melissa McCarthy’s invitation continues her incredible post-Bridesmaids rise. In addition, actors Jonah Hill, Matthew McConaughey, Andy Serkis, Jessica Chastain, and Octavia Spencer were all invited to be members, among others.

Voting membership in the organization has now held steady at just under 6,000 members since 2003, according to the Academy’s website.

HollywoodNews.com: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is extending invitations to join the organization to 176 artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures. Those who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2012 to the Academy’s roster of members.

And the winners of the 84th Academy Awards are...

The 84th annual Academy Awards took place last night at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, California, with Billy Crystal presiding over a ceremony that saw The Artist and Hugo walk away with five statuettes apiece. However, while Hugo dominated the technical categories - collecting the Oscars for Cinematography, Art Direction, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects, the night belonged to Michel Hazanavicius' The Artist, which rounded out a fine run of awards success by taking home Best Costume Design, Best Original Score, Best Actor (Jean Durjardin), Best Director (Hazanavicius) and the coveted Best Picture - making it only the second silent feature to do so, and the first since Wings received the accolade at the inaugural Academy Awards back in 1929.
