The Grim Sleeper follows LA Weekly reporter Christine Pelisek (Walker) as she doggedly investigates the unsolved murders of dozens of women in Los Angeles and soon realizes one person is responsible for many of these deaths that began over 20 years earlier. After a string of murders in the 1980s, the violence seemed to end; but almost 14 years later, another murder spree begins, leading Pelisek to dub the killer "The Grim Sleeper." The reporter-turned-amateur detective notices similarities between the cases and sets out to break the story of her career, researching evidence and interviewing witnesses for clues to the killer's identity. While police and lead detectives (Hudson, O'Neill) kept the community in the dark about a potential serial killer on the loose, Pelisek contacts the victims' families to offer them the truth about what may have happened to their daughters, sisters, wives and mothers. Did You Know?

The movie is based on the real case of "The Grim Sleeper," who is suspected in at least 10 deaths, one attempted murder and six others between 1985 and 2007 (with a 14-year gap in between. In July 2010, Lonnie Davis Franklin, Jr., was arrested and charged with 10 counts of murder and one of attempted murder. He has not been charged, as of August 2014, with six other murders police believe he might have committed during his suspected 14-year hiatus. See more »

While dozens of women were believed killed in the 1980s in southern Los Angeles, the Grim Sleeper has only been charged or suspected in ten of the killings. See more »

The story deserved more, but it also deserves a watch
29 May 2019 | by samsalonenSee all my reviews

This film had so much potential. It has many very good actors and the plot itself was better than in many other serial killer films, but there are a lot of cringe worthy scenes where it takes you out of the story and gets you focused thinking on the film making, is it the bad script, was there not enough time to get in more scenes, directors inexperience, all of those things? The story deserved better. It is still definitely worth the watch. There is a certain lightness, that especially reporter Pelisek brings in, that is rare in a film with a dark subject as this and made it feel very different, but it does not take away the seriousness of the other scenes, it was very well balanced. Somehow reminds me of tv-series like ncis for example, combination of slight humour between co-workers while solving a grim murder case.
