Detective Harry Hole breaks into Katrine's department with a kick, leaving the door open. After a brief fight between both, the gate is closed.

The different snowmen throughout the movie change between camera shots, with no connection to the story.

When Birte and Josephine Becker are texting each other in the beginning of the film, we see that Birte has received several messages from her daughter. In the shot immediately after, we see Josephine typing the messages which Birte had already received seconds earlier. In the following shot, we see Josephine's messages pop up on Birte's phone. In the first shot of Birte's phone, Josephine's messages had not been sent, yet they were briefly visible on Birte's phone.

The garrote cuts Rakel's neck, but before it's loosened, we can see that it wasn't tight, or even touching her skin.

In the finale, one shot of the boy has him with absolutely no duct tape over his mouth. The next shot of him has it on again.

Simple geography: going from Oslo to the midst of Telemark, one does NOT pass Atlanterhavsvegen! That is on the other side of the country. It is 2-3 hours from Oslo to Rjukan where they filmed the house. It is over 8 hours from Oslo to Atlanterhavsvegen and one have to go back the same way to get to Rjukan.

During a helicopter shot over a bridge into a harbor, a boat is shown moving toward the camera. The boat's wake clearly begins in the middle of the harbor where it was waiting for its cue to begin moving.

Birte Becker walks thru snow to enter her house in an early scene. There is no snow on her boots or melted snow the floor. Also Birte and her daughter Josephine both go to bed and do not use any window coverings at all--no shades, nothing, so their rooms are exposed to the bright, white light of winter.

Near the end when Harry enters Mathias's old home, he has his pistol drawn, ready to fire. When clearing the upstairs, Harry hears a noise downstairs and immediately racks a round in the chamber. It is unrealistic to be in a ready to fire position without it being loaded.

The creators removed any Norwegian language from the movie, both language and writing, yet when Harry Hole arrive in Bergen it says with great big letters; Velkommen til Bergen (Welcome to Bergen).

Every time Val Kilmers character speaks you can easily tell his voice is dubbed over with someone else's (this is because Val Kilmer was being treated for throat cancer during filming and because of the surgery his throat was swelled so much he wasn't able to talk correctly)

Harry hole made a wrong turn in the end of the movie,and drove the bridges of the Atlantic road to get to rjukan area ,which makes it a 400 km's bummer of a road trip.

Harry takes a quick and casual train ride to Bergen in the middle of an ongoing investigation. This train ride from Oslo to Bergen would take about 7 hours. In the book Harry flies from Oslo to Bergen, which takes less than an hour. This makes it possible to travel to Bergen and return to Oslo on the same day.

Near the end, when Hole has figured out who the killer is, he calls his police detail to have them track a cell phone signal. They come back with a location, plus the color and model of the car the phone is traveling in.

Right after Harry and the female detective interrogate the doctor in his home, the female detective refers to Michael Fassbender's character as "Mike" rather than "Harry."
