Tells the story of two teen girls who discover that they were accidentally switched at birth. Bay Kennish grew up in a wealthy family with two parents and a brother, while Daphne Vasquez, who lost her hearing as a child due to a case of meningitis, grew up with a single mother in a poor neighborhood. Things come to a dramatic head when both families meet and struggle to learn how to live together for the sake of the girls.

Vanessa Marano (Bay Kennish) has a sister named Laura Marano who is also an actress. Laura has never acted in Switched at Birth, but when Vanessa was asked to bring in photos of herself for the set, she brought in photos of both her and her sister. In season 3 episode 17 - "Girl With Death Mask (She Plays Alone)" - Bay visits her cousin, and he shows her a picture of her deceased, biological aunt. Laura is the aunt in the picture. See more
This series took place in Kansas City, but took an approach that is actually common to TV shows trying to limit their clothing and scenery budgets, which is to pretend that winters (especially fierce Midwestern winters) don't exist. Characters wear short sleeves year round. See more
