- Cheese maker Hans Guntisberg lives after the death of his wife alone and filled with bitterness outside a small village in the Swiss Alps. Although retired, he still works hard to run his small dairy. His daughter Maria lives in the village with her daughter and her husband, the marketing chief of the nearby cheese factory. To his son who was supposed to take over the business but ran off to Australia instead, Hans lost all contact. After a snowstorm Hans finds dark skinned Rashid Mamadou in his goat shed, a refugee from Mali, illegal, sick, and with no possessions. The stranger forces Hans to re-evaluate his relationships and his talent for making cheese - and to find a new grasp of what it means to be a human being.—Jan Poldervaart
- Things are not going well at Hans Güntisberg's old cheese dairy. The widower has to fight for every customer, and now his long-serving employee is also retiring. Hans' daughter Maria is worried. His son-in-law Franz, communications officer at the nearby large cheese dairy, offers him a job. But Hans doesn't want it. All his life he has been his own boss and master and as such he will "kick the bucket". Then one morning he finds a stranger in the goat shed. The man's name is Rashid Mahmadou and he has a bad cold. With a rifle in his hand, Hans "interrogates" the sick man and learns that Rashid has come to Switzerland illegally. He wants to earn money here for his daughter's eye operation. Maria persuades her father to harbor Rashid until he gets better. Rashid's presence does Hans good. The old cheese maker thaws out and develops new ideas for his business. Rashid also gets back on his feet. He even fills in for Hans in the cheese dairy at short notice to return the favor for his hospitality. Hans' granddaughter Mirjam, who was always a little afraid of her grandfather, now enjoys visiting them often. A breath of fresh air blows through the old cheese dairy. Then the most important customer cancels his order.—SRF
