Also winning for animation was “The Wild Robot”, following its Annies sweep and Ves prizes. On the TV side, “Shōgun”, “Squid Game”, “Fallout,” and “The Penguin” were the winners for their production designers in their respective categories.
Lathrop for “Nosferatu” won in something of an upset over “The Brutalist’s” Judy Becker, who had been the presumptive Oscar favorite for channeling Oscar-nominated Adrien Brody’s visionary architect, László Tóth, in applying a Brutalist style to the architectural designs of mid-century Pennsylvania with its bold shapes and function over form aesthetic.

Awards-watchers are accustomed to waiting for the end of every awards show to see the big film categories handed out, but Saturday’s Writers Guild Awards threw everybody for a loop by making the film awards the first two categories of the night in simultaneous ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York.
“Nickel Boys” won the first award of the night, for Best Adapted Screenplay, and “Anora” won the second, for Best Original Screenplay. The awards led off the shows because the BAFTA Awards are taking place in London on Sunday, with the categories’ early placement giving “Nickel Boys” writers RaMell Ross and Joslyn Barnes and “Anora” writer Sean Baker more time to get to London.
In the television categories that ended the show, “Shōgun” and “Hacks” continued the roll they’ve been on since last September’s Emmy Awards, with the former show winning three awards and the latter show winning two.

When Will Smith slapped Chris Rock on the stage at the 94th Academy Awards, it immediately jumped to the list of most controversial sights in the history of the Oscars. And it was all over a mediocre joke tied to a movie pretty much nobody talks about anymore. Now, G.I. Jane star Demi Moore is weighing in on that Oscars moment – and she has clearly taken a side.
Speaking with Deadline, Demi Moore said that Oscars fiasco came from a good place out of presenter Chris Rock, saying assaulter (and eventual Best Actor winner that night) Will Smith read it all wrong. “I think, if I’m interpreting correctly, I don’t think Chris meant it as a slight. I actually think he was paying it as a compliment. And so there might have just been a little bit of a misunderstanding, a misperception of what he was saying.”

You may not have noticed this unless you’ve watched his films closely, but Bong Joon Ho has a few quibbles with capitalism. It’s true! I know it can be hard to focus on subtext when the former Captain America is lamenting the fact that “babies taste best,” but watch “Snowpiercer” for a second time and you might just be able to tease out a well-sheathed critique of the social order in its story about an economically segregated train where the people in the lower classes are forced to eat each other alive while their rich overlords in the front cars are free to enjoy the eternal rewards of the locomotive’s self-perpetuating engine.

While the film quickly became one of 2024’s best, winning Best Screenplay at Cannes and receiving five Oscar nominations including Best Picture, filmmaker Coralie Fargeat reportedly faced several obstacles from the studio to bring the film to life. Coralie Fargeat’s indie blockbuster The Substance — which has earned $77 million worldwide and picked up 5 Oscar nominations — is the current queen of female body horror, but gross-out feminist films are everywhere. Sundance’s Midnight screenings this year included Emilie Blichfeldt’s The Ugly Stepsister — a twisted take on the Cinderella story involving bone-crunching cosmetic surgery and bodily mutilation — and Grace Glowicki’s Dead Lover, a horror comedy about a gravedigger (Glowicki) who goes to macabre lengths in an attempt to re-animate her deceased mate.

Mike Flanagan, the modern master of psychological horror, has found his next big project, Clayface. The long-rumored film about Batman’s shape-shifting villain is reportedly in development at Warner Bros., with Flanagan set to write and direct.
Given his track record with films like Doctor Sleep and The Haunting of Hill House, expectations are sky-high. But there’s one major problem, we’ve already seen this story, sort of.

Demi Moore is currently riding a wave of critical acclaim for The Substance, a body-horror thriller that explores transformation, identity, and the horrors of self-perception. The film, which wowed audiences at Cannes, follows a woman who ingests a mysterious substance that allows her to mold herself into a more ideal version. Sound familiar?

When Coralie Fargeat set out to write “The Substance” she wanted to create a film that stayed with the audience long after they left the theater. So, it’s not surprising that when she sat down to write her Oscar nominated screenplay she looked to the films that had left an indelible mark on her.
While on a special edition of the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast, Fargeat returned with a list of six films she wanted to discuss because they had directly inspired the ideas, story, and the visual and aural storytelling of “The Substance.” During the podcast, Fargeat talked about why certain movies left such a lasting imprint on her and what she learned from each.
“It’s about the phantasmagoria, the fact that you break the rules of reality,” said Fargeat. “You create the reality of your film, and then I think it gives you such a freedom to...

Small Things Like These, an Irish drama starring Cillian Murphy as a coal merchant and father haunted by secret abuses in a local convent sanctioned by the Catholic Church, beat out Kneecap, the hip-hop comedy featuring Michael Fassbender, to win the best film honor at the Irish Film & Television Awards 2025 during a ceremony held in Dublin on Friday. Saoirse Ronan left with two awards (the lead actress honor for her role in The Outrun and the supporting actress trophy for Blitz). Murphy won the best actor IFTA for his work in Small Things Like These. Demi Moore (The Substance) and Ralph Fiennes (Conclave) were honored in the international acting categories, and Colin Farrell (The Penguin) and Sharon Horgan (for writing Bad Sisters) earned TV statuettes.
Rich Peppiatt received the best director IFTA for Kneecap, which follows the West Belfast hip-hop trio of the same name on their mission to save their mother tongue.

Under picturesque snowfall and sub-zero temperatures, Timothée Chalamet braved the chill in Berlin’s Potsdamer Platz on Friday, stopping to sign autographs for a polite group of fans and collectors. The actor was in town to promote “A Complete Unknown,” his Bob Dylan biopic launching in Germany on Feb. 27 — but let’s be honest, there’s another reason for the European detour: Oscar campaigning.
While none of the eager autograph hunters will be checking his name on a ballot, multiple AMPAS voters later attended the film’s glittering Berlinale screening, making this yet another crucial pit stop on the road to the Dolby Theatre.
A short flight away and two weeks earlier, Demi Moore was making her presence felt at Armani Privé’s spring 2024 show during Couture Week in Paris. Her body horror thriller “The Substance” — directed by Parisian filmmaker Coralie Fargeat — has been making waves all season, with Moore...

We know that Demi Moore is overdue for an Oscar, having never been nominated, and that the Golden Globe was the first award she has ever won. And she gave a great speech that landed her the Oscar nomination for Best Actress.
But that narrative is not the only reason Moore will win her first gold man.
The 62-year-old veteran has been on the awards stump since “The Substance” (Mubi) wowed Cannes. Coralie Fargeat‘s feminist body horror movie clearly plays well for a global audience. But here’s the crucial thing that will put Moore over the top. At a recent Q&a with me at the WGA Theatre, as Moore sat with her tiny chihuahua Pilaf in her lap, the audience leaned in. They responded to her message of change and renewal, of freedom and uplift. They were listening to a spiritual guru.

“The Substance” and “Queer” distributor Mubi is continuing its acquisition streak, picking up “The History of Sound,” the anticipated gay romance drama starring Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor, for North America. Focus Features and Universal Pictures International, meanwhile, have acquired international rights for the film.
Directed by Oliver Hermanus, the feature finished production earlier this year. Mubi says it’s planning a theatrical release for 2025, following a world premiere to be announced in the coming months.
Announced back in 2021, “The History of Sound” became the first project Mescal shot after his starring role in “Gladiator II” and follows two young men, Lionel (Mescal) and David (O’Connor), in the shadows of WWI who are determined to record the lives, voices and music of Americans. As they begin to log the events, the two fall in love.
The film was penned by Ben Shattuck, adapted from his own award-winning short story.

On a recent episode of The View, Whoopi Goldberg was caught off guard when co-hosts Sara Haines and Sunny Hostin pressed her to reveal a secret.
Although Whoopi was ready to talk about Ariana Grande, her plans were interrupted as the hosts eagerly pushed her to spill the beans on something she had been keeping under wraps.
An Ordinary Episode Turns Juicy
On the Tuesday, February 11 episode of The View, Whoopi and the other hosts talked about Joy Behar’s new project, My First Ex-Husband Productions, alongside discussions on political topics, including President Trump’s administration.
When Whoopi tried to switch gears to discuss Ariana Grande, Sara Haines stopped her, teasingly saying, “Oh no, don’t do that. You have something to share with the group you did not tell us about.” This left Whoopi momentarily stunned as Sara hinted at a “big secret” she was hiding.
The panel continued to playfully badger Whoopi.

It looks like John Stamos has General Hospital on the mind ever since his heartwarming reunion with his former Gh co-star, Demi Moore.
Port Charles Past
Gh was first to reveal that Stamos (ex-Blackie) presented Moore (ex-Jackie) with the award for Best Actress at the AARP Awards for her role in The Substance. The two were captured reuniting on the red carpet, where they shared smiles and hugs.
Stamos and Moore shared the screen back in 1982 when they played Blackie Parrish and Jackie Templeton. Neither have returned to Port Charles to reprise their roles, but while Moore’s character has since been recast with Kim Delaney, Stamos’ character is only mentioned every once in a while. Lucy (Lynn Herring) even once teased a Blackie return at a previous Nurses Ball but broke the news that he wasn’t able to make it.

Marvel Studios might be eyeing Margaret Qualley for the role of Rogue in the upcoming X-Men reboot. This comes from a recent report by TheHotMic podcast’s insider, TheInSneider.
Qualley, who has gained attention for her performance in The Substance, is no stranger to big names in Hollywood, having worked with directors like Quentin Tarantino.
It’s clear that her acting skills have made a mark, and this rumored casting could take her career even further. Fans are starting to believe this could be a smart choice for Rogue, given Qualley’s range and screen presence.
If she lands the role, she’d be joining a fresh batch of actors for the reboot of the X-Men franchise. The role of Rogue, known for her ability to absorb others’ powers, requires someone who can handle complex emotions and physical scenes, and many think Qualley fits the bill.
While there’s no official confirmation yet,...

The last two years of the BAFTA Awards told opposite stories of how Britain’s most prestigious film honors correspond with their American counterpart, the Oscars. In 2023, they went wholly in their own direction, voting differently from AMPAS in all major categories — showering Edward Berger’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” with gold and all but ignoring Oscar darling “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Last year, however, they matched the Oscars in every category save for best visual effects, as Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” ran the table on both sides of the pond. The BAFTAs, in other words, are either the most crucial Oscar precursor or the most rogue; either way, pundits watch them with bated breath.
When BAFTA voters go their own way, it’s often in favor of contenders close to home. Berger’s follow-up to “All Quiet,” the well-liked Vatican thriller “Conclave,” is the only British...

The X-Men casting rumors continue to swirl, and this latest report is sure to get a lot of attention.
According to The Hot Mic's Jeff Sneider, The Substance star Margaret Qualley is being eyed for the role of Rogue.
Rogue, real name Anna Marie, is easily one of the most popular members of the team, and fans have been hoping to see a comic-accurate take on the sassy Southern belle in live-action for many years. Anna Paquin played a younger version of the character in 20th Century Fox's X-Men movies, but she didn't really have much in common with her comic book counterpart.
Qualley's acclaimed turn in The Substance has made her a hot commodity in Hollywood, so it was probably only a matter of time before a major superhero franchise came calling.
Though we're still waiting on an official announcement, Marvel does seem to be making moves on this project behind-the-scenes.

“ I feel so lucky to be nominated, by your peers, particularly to this stage. It’s her second nomination in the category, following her victory a decade ago for The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Despite the recent massive shakeup in the Oscar race after Anora took down The Brutalist at the Critics Choice, Directors Guild, and Producers Guild awards, look for The Brutalist to walk away with the most trophies at the 78th annual BAFTA Awards this weekend, according to Gold Derby’s winner predictions.
Both movies are going head-to-head for Best Film, where the other three nominees are A Complete Unknown, Conclave, and Emilia Pérez.

Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldaña, Jesse Eisenberg, Joe Alwyn, Isabella Rossellini, Colman Domingo and Ralph Fiennes are among the presenters set for the 2025 BAFTA Film Awards.

The Substance is a strong contender for the Oscar race, and rightfully so, as it is the kind of horror that lingers long after the credits roll. It doesn’t just tell a story, it challenges the audience to question everything. One of the biggest debates surrounding the film is why Demi Moore’s Elisabeth, or Margaret Qualley’s Sue, seems to exist as a separate person while the other guy doesn’t.
Demi Moore in The Substance | Credits: Mubi
And even more puzzling, if Elisabeth never actually experiences her younger self and just spends a week in a state of decay, what’s the point? Why would anyone willingly go through this process if they don’t get to benefit from it? That’s where so many viewers are missing the bigger picture.

Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley, and Guy Pearce have officially joined the cast of The Dog Stars, Ridley Scott’s next film for 20th Century Studios. They will star alongside Jacob Elordi, who was cast earlier this year after Paul Mescal stepped away due to scheduling conflicts. Filming is set to begin in Italy at the end of April.
Based on Peter Heller’s 2012 novel, the movie takes place in a post-apocalyptic world after a deadly flu virus wipes out most of humanity. Elordi plays Hig, a pilot struggling to survive in this harsh new reality. He teams up with a hardened gunman, played by Brolin, as they navigate threats from roving scavengers. Along the way, Hig encounters Cima, a young doctor portrayed by Qualley, and her protective father, played by Pearce. The script was adapted by Mark L. Smith, known for The Revenant and the upcoming Twisters.

Ridley Scott is pressing ahead with The Dog Stars, adding Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin and Guy Pearce to the cast.
During his press tour for Gladiator II, Ridley Scott revealed to Film Stories that a sci-fi project had been added to his upcoming slate, that was going to be a quick reunion with Paul Mescal. However, it would later emerge that Mescal had left the project because of his commitment to playing one of the Fab Four in Sam Mendes’ upcoming films based on The Beatles.
Still, the project is The Dog Stars, and it’s coming next from the bearded one.
Last month, Jacob Elordi would be announced as the new lead actor in The Dog Stars, and now we have a pretty good idea of the film’s supporting cast too. Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin and Guy Pearce are all (according to The Hollywood Reporter) in final negotiations to join the cast,...

The 2025 awards season may still be a few weeks from its final hurrah, but it’s already had an impact on the film industry as buyers and sellers prepare to congregate once more at the European Film Market in Berlin.
With a lineup of Oscar frontrunners that includes “The Brutalist,” “Anora,” “The Substance” and “Emilia Pérez” — coupled with some impressive box office figures that look only set to grow — this year’s race has highlighted the desire of cinemagoers for bold, director-driven, out-of-the-ordinary fare.
“When you look at ‘Emilia Pérez’ and ‘I’m Still Here’ and ‘The Substance,’ those films are unique, they told some of the best stories and bring a unique perspective on something,” said Scott Shooman, head of AMC Networks’ Film Group which encompasses IFC Films.
For Shooman, the EFM is exactly the place where international buyers respond to these types of packages — led by creatively minded directors.

Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin, Guy Pearce Join Jacob Elordi in Ridley Scott Thriller ‘The Dog Stars’

Ridley Scott’s forthcoming dystopian thriller The Dog Stars is continuing to cast up after previously landing Jacob Elordi as the lead.
Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin and Guy Pearce are in final talks to star in the movie for 20th Century Studios. Mark L. Smith wrote the script, adapting Peter Heller’s 2012 apocalyptic novel of the same name.
The Dog Stars centers on a civilian pilot living on an abandoned airbase with his dog and an ex-Marine amid a devastating pandemic. A random transmission picked up by the pilot’s radio from his 1956 Cessna offers hope for a better life.
The Hollywood Reporter reported last month that Elordi was in early negotiations to replace Paul Mescal. Scott told the crowd at a Gladiator II screening in December that Mescal would likely drop out of reteaming with him in The Dog Stars due to the actor being busy with Sam Mendes’ four-film Beatles project.
