Actress Margaret Qualley has shared that the prosthetic makeup she wore while shooting “The Substance” caused serious skin damage that took a year to heal.
In a recent “Happy Sad Confused” podcast episode, Qualley told host Josh Horowitz that her skin irritation became so severe that it changed the movie’s shooting schedule and how the cameras were used.
“They had to shoot up my skirt in the beginning credits, with palm trees all around and long lenses from the bottom, because my face was so damaged they couldn’t shoot it anymore,” Qualley said. Director Coralie Fargeat had to use clever camera settings to solve the problem.
Qualley still had skin issues during her next project, “Kinds of Kindness,” directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. The damage helped her play one of the four roles in the movie better than she expected.

In a recent interview on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Margaret Qualley said it took “a year” for her skin to recover from the irritation caused by the face prosthetics used in “The Substance.” The damage was so bad that director Coralie Fargeat had to frame out her face in certain shots.
“At the end, when they’re shooting up my skirt in the beginning credits, and it’s like the palm trees all around and they have all these long lenses from the bottom, that’s just because my face was so fucked up,” Qualley said. “They couldn’t shoot my face anymore.”
The acne from the prosthetics lasted long after “The Substance” wrapped and persisted as she began shooting her next film, “Kinds of Kindness,” in which she played four characters: Vivian, Martha, Rebecca and Ruth. Luckily, the acne played to her benefit in the Yorgos Lanthimos drama.

There’s an old saying: “It’s not the years in your life that count, it’s the life in your years.” But when it comes to the Oscars, it’s not just about the life you’ve lived, but the roles you’ve played, the moments you’ve owned, and—let’s face it—the right timing. The 2025 Academy Awards are still a few months away, but the race is already in full swing, and while you might have thought Angelina Jolie and Zoe Saldaña would be the ones to watch, the winds are shifting.

The 30th Annual Critics Choice Awards is on the move again. The award show, originally scheduled for January 12 and subsequently pushed to January 26, will now take place in February, sources tell Deadline. The exact date is still Tba.
Chelsea Handler is still expected to return as host for her third consecutive year, I hear. It is unclear whether the rescheduled event will remain at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. The ceremony will be broadcast live on E! and around the world, available on Peacock the next day.
The Critics Choice Awards was among the first major Hollywood events to be postponed just hours into the firestorm that decimated the Pacific Palisades and Altadena neighborhoods of Los Angeles. A week later, the city is still grappling with the full scope of the devastation, which has hit Hollywood hard, impacting dozens of actors, writers, directors, producers, executives and talent representatives impacted.

While on an upcoming episode of the Filmmaker Toolkit Podcast, writer and director Coralie Fargeat broke down the cinematic lineage of her “The Substance.” When talking about her much-heralded body horror sensation — the rare genre film to break into the awards race — Fargeat discussed wanting to make a film that “stays with you long after you leave the theater.” Fargeat has spent a great deal of time analyzing why certain movies left a lasting imprint on her and what she could learn from each.
“It’s about the phantasmagoria, the fact that you break the rules of reality,” said Fargeat. “You create the reality of your film, and then I think it gives you such a freedom to create something that no one else but you is going to create for your own movie.”

Seven years went from the time when director Coralie Fargeat made her feature directorial debut with a very cool revenge movie that was appropriately titled Revenge – you can read our 8/10 review of the film at This Link – and when she came back with an “explosive feminist take on body horror” called The Substance, which stars Demi Moore (Ghost) and Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood). Fargeat’s second movie was worth the wait (you can read our 9/10 review Here), and has been streaming on the Mubi service since Halloween. Now, Mubi has shared a making-of featurette that goes behind the scenes for The Substance for 28 minutes, and you can check it out in the embed above!
The film is gory, but also humorous, and it’s quite a wild ride. Here’s the official synopsis: It generates another you. A new, younger, more beautiful, more perfect you. And...

(Warning: This story contains spoilers for Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance).
In the final scenes of The Substance, things get messy.
Coralie Fargeat’s body horror satire follows the descent of former A-lister Elisabeth Sparkle who, in a desperate attempt to recapture her youth and stay relevant in sexist and ageist Hollywood, starts taking a mysterious chemical called The Substance. Things go very, very wrong.
Shortly after injecting the substance, Sparkle (Demi Moore, who just picked up her first-ever Golden Globe for the role) is writhing on her bathroom floor. Her back splits down the spine and Sue, a slimy, younger version of herself (played by Margaret Qualley) crawls out. Initially, the two clones follow the plan, swapping out every seven days. The body in the bathroom is kept alive with a feeding tube, while the other free is free live their life.

“The Substance” (Mubi) and “Flow” (Janus/Sideshow), two very independent specialized releases, add to their theatrical and awards successes with strong interest on home viewing.
“Wicked” (Universal), expecting even greater recognition repeats as #1 at both iTunes (ranking by transactions) and Fandango (by revenue) in its second week out. The studio, which like others rarely announces home video returns, said its first week out had $70 million in rentals and sales. They get 80 percent of this after a small carriage fee deduction, a much higher return than in theaters. This buttresses the claim of how vital PVOD is, even if its often early streaming release seems to intrude on theatrical play.
Netflix, meanwhile, underwent a wholesale turnover this week, with only three films listed last week still on their top 10. “Ad Vitam,” an original French thriller in the Liam Neeson-mold that follows a lone avenger saving a family member in danger,...

One month ago, we asked Gemini AI for Oscar predictions, and it endorsed Gladiator II as a contender for picture, director (Ridley Scott), and supporting actor (Denzel Washington). Well, Google’s artificial intelligence bot has rebooted, and it now believes the mixed-reviewed sequel will be mostly forgotten come Oscars time. In fact, Gemini’s current picks in the six main categories align much more closely with Gold Derby’s overall choices.
You can see Gemini’s forecasted nominations below, where The Brutalist, a period piece about a Holocaust survivor who’s trying to live the American Dream, is expected to clean up with bids for picture, director (Brady Corbet), actor (Adrien Brody), supporting actress (Felicity Jones), and supporting actor (Guy Pearce). Meanwhile, Anora, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, and Emilia Pérez are expected to nab four noms apiece in the six main races.

Coralie Fargeat's masterful body horror film The Substance has been all the rage this awards season, not only because it's excellent but also because it's so rare for a horror movie to get nominated at the most prestigious award shows. Notably, Demi Moore won her first Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy earlier this month, where the film also received nominations for Best Director, Best Motion Picture, Best Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress (Margaret Qualley).
Following the Golden Globes, The Substance continues to win awards from organizations like the Austin Film Critics Association and the Alliance of Women Film Journalists. The film has also been nominated for Critics' Choice Awards and a Screen Actors Guild Award. It seems increasingly likely that The Substance will receive Academy Award attention. Some professional critics even believe Moore could be a frontrunner for this year's Best Actress race.

At the 82nd annual Golden Globes held on January 5, Demi Moore, who has been working steadily in Hollywood for decades, won her first ever competitive acting award thanks to Coralie Fargeat's body-horror hit "The Substance."
Moore beat out some stiff competition to win Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy award, including Cynthia Erivo in "Wicked: Part One" and Mikey Madison in "Anora," and her powerful speech about how women in the entertainment industry are constantly trying to measure up to a truly impossible standard was nothing if not deeply inspiring. Despite apparently being told that she would never be anything more than a "popcorn actress" by some foolish studio executive, Moore proudly stood on stage at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, telling women all over the world, "In those moments when we don't think we're smart enough or pretty enough or skinny enough or successful enough or...

“The Substance”, the 2024 award-winning satirical horror, live-action feature, written and directed by Coralie Fargeat, starring Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid, is being re-released January 17, 2025 in theaters:
“…on her 50th birthday, ‘Elisabeth Sparkle’, a once-celebrated, now-faded Hollywood movie star, is unceremoniously dismissed from the long-running aerobics TV show she hosted…
“…with producer ‘Harvey’ citing her advanced age as the reason.
“While driving home, Elisabeth is distracted by a billboard featuring herself being taken down, causing an accident.
“During a hospital check-up, a nurse slips her a flash drive advertising ‘The Substance’…
“…a serum that generates a ‘younger, more beautiful, more perfect’ counterpart.
“After some deliberation, Elisabeth orders The Substance and injects the single-use activator serum…
“…causing a much younger version of herself to emerge from her body called ‘Sue’…”

Over the weekend, my wife and I watched Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance, and I don’t know if I’ll ever be the same. Fargeat’s unnerving body-horror thriller goes to the extreme, and I’m not ashamed to admit that I hid behind a pile of pillows for 40% of the film. What? Fingernail and teeth “stuff” is my horror movie kryptonite, and The Substance gives audiences no quarter with its approach to gross-out scenes and unforgiving self-reflection. Luckily, I watched the movie in the comfort of my home, but now those brave enough to watch The Substance in public can do so at the cinema when the film returns to US theaters on January 17, 2025.
In The Substance, a fading celebrity called Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) takes a black-market drug: a cell-replicating substance that temporarily creates a younger, better version of herself. When Elisabeth’s other self, Sue (Margaret Qualley...

French movies had a banner 2024 on home turf with a 44% market share at the French box office, which broke a 15-year record; meanwhile, Gallic films saw a 11% year-on-year drop in international revenues, according to figures unveiled by the National Film Board (Cnc) and Unifrance during the Rendez-Vous in Paris market on Monday.
During the first 50 weeks of 2024, French movies generated 222.8 million euros ($227.2 million) from 33.4 million admissions outside France. Taking into account tickets sales during the second half of December, Unifrance anticipates the final box office for international will be closer to 38 million admissions and 250 million euros ($255.2 million) in revenues.
While it doesn’t represent France in the Oscar race, “The Count of Monte-Cristo,” a three-hour epic adventure film adapted from Alexandre Dumas’ classic, ranks as the biggest French film export in 2024.

NBC is facing some major backlash over their interview with Dennis Quaid.
On Friday night (January 10), the 70-year-old The Substance actor was in the middle of frantically packing up his car outside of his home in Brentwood, Calif. when a reporter for NBC 4 Los Angeles kept going up to him and asking questions about the fire.
Dennis appeared polite and spoke with the reporter, even getting emotional at one point, despite hurriedly trying to evacuate.
After the segment, many took to X, formerly Twitter, to call out NBC for disrupting Dennis as he tried to get his family to safety.
Keep reading to find out more…“I’m embarrassed for the guy interviewing Dennis Quaid on the news. He’s trying to evacuate just like everyone else and you’re trying to make him your Bff,” one person tweeted.
Another wrote, “Dennis Quaid’s wildfire evacuation turns cringe: Overeager reporter...

Despite a litany of streaming services out there to choose from, the only surefire way to have immediate access to a film is to own it yourself. But with companies like Best Buy getting rid of their Physical Media departments, collecting has become more and more niche. This is a shame because I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve gone to JustWatch and discovered the movie I was looking for wasn’t streaming Anywhere. And even worse when we go to find a copy and discover that it’s not even available to own physically! I’ve never heard of a company refusing to make money, but we’ve seen it time and time again in the movie industry.
As a big fan of the Scream franchise, I set out to collect all of the 4K Steelbooks for the franchise. Hell, I even imported the second one from Europe.

A time like now, as fires rage around Los Angeles, makes awards season start to feel just a little more insignificant than, in the grand scheme, it already is. This week, events like the AFI luncheon and Critics Choice Awards ceremony were postponed. So were the Oscar nominations themselves, moved from Friday, January 17 to Sunday, January 19, with voting extended to January 14 to give people extra time to fill in their ballots. Will that matter, and is that what people in Hollywood really care about right now?
These are questions we ask on the latest episode of IndieWire’s “Screen Talk” podcast before diving into a debate and speculation around how a flurry of awards nominations and wins coming in from the past week will impact the Oscars. The Screen Actors Guild Award nominations left out Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste. The Directors Guild of America award nominations went...

Like a rolling stone gathers no moss, Timothee Chalamet’s awards campaign for A Complete Unknown continues unabated. On Friday, NBC announced Chalamet will host the Jan. 25 edition of Saturday Night Live and serve as the night’s musical guest. The expectation is that Chalamet, who plays Bob Dylan in the new film, will perform Dylan songs on the broadcast.
Regardless of the playlist, Chalamet’s dual role on the broadcast will make some Saturday Night Live history. He’s among a select few non-professional singers or traditional musicians who have served as SNL hosts and performed as musicians on the same show, joining names like Lily Tomlin, Desi Arnaz, and Deion Sanders.
The SNL appearance is the latest high-profile stop on Chalamet’s press tour and awards campaign for A Complete Unknown. The actor has spent the last month promoting his work in James Mangold’s film – including a...

As infuriating as Bill Maher is as a comedian, talk show host and belligerent drunken YouTuber, he’s somehow even more annoying when he attempts to discuss films.
As we’ve mentioned before, Maher’s baffling cinematic taste has previously prompted him to shit all over Martin Scorsese’s iconic Raging Bull, and heap praise on Jerry Seinfeld’s not-so-iconic Bee Movie. Now the star of Pizza Man is weighing in on one of the most talked-about movies of last year: Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance.

Editor’s Note: This story was originally published during the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival but has been updated as of Friday, January 10.
Coralie Fargeat has always zigged where others zagged. But knowing what she did and did not want to do helped her to focus her goals. She grew up in Paris on a diet of American movies, which built her taste for genre films. As a teenager, she shot “Star Wars” remakes with her little camera in her backyard.
“The ones that were resonating with me that were going out of the real world, out of reality, were more English-speaking genre films,” she told IndieWire at the Toronto International Film Festival, where her second feature, Cannes body horror breakout “The Substance” (Mubi), starring Demi Moore as an actress fighting her age with radical chemistry, won the screenwriting prize at Cannes and the TIFF People’s Choice Midnight Madness Award.

Dune: Part Two was one of the finest films to have come out of 2024 and there is no question about it. Directed by Denis Villeneuve and starring Timothée Chalamet with Zendaya and others, the film was a slap to those who believe that sequels are always disappointing. Despite the crazy box office collection and the overwhelmingly positive response from both critics and fans alike, the Directors Guild of America Awards’ decision has shocked cinema enthusiasts.

The nominees for the 77th Directors Guild of America Awards were recently unveiled and the world is surprised to learn that Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two was not nominated for a single category, let alone for Feature Film. Unfortunately, if history is any indication, this does not look good for the filmmaker who might be hoping for an Oscar win.

When Demi Moore took to the stage to accept her rightful Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for "The Substance," the 62-year-old announced that it was the first time she'd ever received an industry honor of this caliber despite having been working for over 45 years. "30 years ago, I had a producer tell me that I was a popcorn actress," she said, "and at that time, I made that mean that this wasn't something that I was allowed to have." She continued, "I bought in, and I believed that, and that corroded me over time, to the point where I thought a few years ago that maybe this was it."
She added, "Maybe I was complete, maybe I've done what I was supposed to do and as I was at kind of a low point, I had this magical, bold, courageous, out-of-the-box, absolutely bonkers script...

The Art Directors Guild has announced the nominees for its 29th Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards. Production design is all about worldbuilding, and so it’s fitting that the nominees are spread out by the kinds of worlds production designers are asked to create and the demands of their setting. The feature film nominee categories are amongst period settings, contemporary settings, and fantasy settings and the television shows are divided further by format between single-camera hourlong, half-hour, multicamera series, limited series, and TV movie, among others.
But the nominees themselves align with IndieWire’s predicted frontrunners for the Oscar category. “Dune: Part Two” and “Wicked,” among others, are nominated in the fantasy feature film category, while “The Brutalist,” and “Conclave” each received nominations in period feature and contemporary feature, respectively. On the TV side, “Shōgun” continues its conquest of guild nominations with one for period single-camera series, but “Squid Game,...
