As satellite TV signals blast the Guatemalan highlands, Maya magic confronts the new mythologies of American pop culture.
At a festival in highlands Guatemala, devotional Maya dances are disrupted by an eerie new performance featuring masked characters from Hollywood and television. As old and new masqueraders compete for attention in the center of town, the audience confronts a strange and troubling history that links Guatemala with the US, magic with pop culture, and religion with burlesque entertainment.
