Dau (2019)
Trivia
Some of the extras were actually living and working for months in the decoration of Institute of Physical Problems of Science Academy of USSR, using clothes and things designed to look like 1940's things, or really from that time period, including even cigarettes, matches, money and food. There were even real laboratories where real experiments were done by real scientists.
For this film the biggest studio decoration was built (depicting Institute of Physical Problems of Science Academy of USSR) on the site of the ex-swimming pool of Dynamo Sports Complex in Kharkiv, Ukraine. With an area of 6 km² (approx. 2 square miles), this location had its own rules - for example no one (not even the crew) could be there if they weren't dressed in 1940's costumes. Modern instruments were usually hidden somewhere, too.
The movie was originally planned to premiere on the Cannes Film Festival in 2010, but the filming process was much longer than expected.
Pre-production lasted 2 years, most of which were archive researching, extras casting, building of the decorations in Kharkiv and prop search.
80,000 units of costume, 10,000 of them originally designed and produced. There were 30,000 fittings in total.
When the filming took place on Ploschad Svobodi (The Freedom Square), a large sculpture depicting V.I. Lenin was hidden under decorations, because it was not standing in this place until 1963.
For French viewers, movies are voiced by Isabelle Huppert, Fanny Ardant, Isabelle Adjani, Gérard Depardieu
Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation refused to give four out of ten episodes of the picture a rental certificate, as "they contain scenes that could not even be assigned an 18+ rating".
Walls of the Institute of Physical Problems of Science Academy of USSR decoration was made of polypropylene.
Daniil Spivakovskiy wanted to play the role of Lev Landau.
Elena Yakovleva auditioned for the role of 'Kora Landau-Drobantseva'.
