Oscar Nomination Predictions 2019: Look for ‘A Star Is Born’ and ‘Roma’ to Lead a Messy Field
Maybe the Oscar nominations can restore some clarity and civility to a messy and nasty awards season.

But don’t count on it.

This has been a rocky year for most awards contenders, with skeletons unearthed and outrage nurtured and mud flung at a hefty cross-section of the films that could be in the running for the top prizes on Feb. 24. But now it’s time to narrow the field and identify the front runners and the also-rans.

On Tuesday morning, things will get real in a wild and weird season.

So far, the Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Awards and the guild nominations haven’t really told us much about what seems to be a wide-open race. Going into Tuesday morning’s Oscar nominations, there’s a lot at stake for “A Star Is Born” and “Roma,

Will ‘Vice’ win the same two Oscars as ‘Darkest Hour’: Best Actor and Best Makeup and Hairstyling?

Will ‘Vice’ win the same two Oscars as ‘Darkest Hour’: Best Actor and Best Makeup and Hairstyling?
Adam McKay’s “Vice” could well follow in the Oscar footsteps of Joe Wright’s “Darkest Hour.” Both biopics portray portly, balding man with supreme power and authority – Dick Cheney and Winston Churchill, respectively. Each showcases a transformative performance by a respected actor.

In “Darkest Hour,” Gary Oldman embodied the British statesman. He won Best Actor pretty much everywhere, including at the Academy Awards. In “Vice,” his “Dark Knight” co-star Christian Bale is the essence of the American vice president: a scarier figure altogether, like a looming great white shark. Unlike Oldman, Bale didn’t start off the awards season as the favorite in the Oscar race. However, his wins at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards have turned him into the Best Actor frontrunner.

Both actors credit their respective hair and make-up teams for transforming them into their characters. The legendary Kazuhiro Tsuji, who Oldman coaxed out of

Last Sam standing: Elliott will make Best Supporting Actor Oscar lineup over Rockwell, readers believe

Last Sam standing: Elliott will make Best Supporting Actor Oscar lineup over Rockwell, readers believe
Is there enough room for two Sams in the Best Supporting Actor Oscar final five? You don’t think so. Sams Elliott (“A Star Is Born”) and Rockwell (Vice”) have split the televised precursor nominations, and 57 percent of you believe Elliott will edge out Rockwell in the end for a spot.

Earlier in the season, Elliott seemed like a shoo-in for a nomination — which would be his first ever — and possibly even a win for his brief but effective performance as Bradley Cooper‘s brother in “A Star Is Born.” But he’s had an uneven run so far, making Critics’ Choice and the Screen Actors Guild Awards, but getting snubbed by the Golden Globes and BAFTA. However, Elliott has the advantage of being in a top Best Picture contender that has gone 11 for 12 in guild nominations. He also fits the profile of a typical winner in this category: veteran

Andy Serkis Sings "Bohemian Rhapsody" as Gollum in Latest Mocking of U.K.'s Brexit Talks

There may be few people singing about Brexit in the U.K., especially following a week in which the British government's latest attempts to secure a deal with Europe appeared to crash and burn in spectacular fashion. (On Tuesday it lost a vote by the largest majority for a sitting government in history.)

In steps Andy Serkis.

For the second time in just over a month, the actor — clearly no fan of Brexit or Britain's under-fire Conservative government — posted a video on Facebook that saw him dressed up to resemble the U.K.'s embattled ...

Cristina Ramos is shocked she beat Darci Lynne Farmer on ‘America’s Got Talent: The Champions’

Cristina Ramos still can’t believe she is going to be in the final of “America’s Got Talent: The Champions.” This rock opera singer, who’d won “Spain’s Got Talent” in 2016, readily admits in a post-show interview that she was shocked when she won more votes from the superfans than ventriloquist Darci Lynne Farmer.

After all, that teen talent had won “Agt” in 2017 and has gone on to headline her own live show as well as a Christmas special that earned high ratings for NBC. While Darci Lynn was well-known to the voters, who are long-time viewers of “America’s Got Talent,” Cristina was a complete mystery. And, as she explains in the video above, that might have been what gave her the edge.

While Darci Lynn opened the show on Monday, Cristina was the fifth of the 10 acts to perform. Before she sang, she told the judges

Darci Lynne Farmer on her shocking elimination from ‘America’s Got Talent: The Champions’

Darci Lynne Farmer on her shocking elimination from ‘America’s Got Talent: The Champions’
Even after her shocking elimination from “America’s Got Talent: The Champions,” Darci Lynne Farmer kept smiling. In her post-show interview, this singing ventriloquist thanks the judges for the compliments and her puppet pal Oscar the Mouse chimes in with his special message for Mel B.

Remember, it was this one-time Spice Girl that discovered Darci Lynne back in 2017. She gave this Oklahoma girl the Golden Buzzer that sent her straight through to the live shows. She ended up winning season 12 of “Agt” and, as Darci Lynne explains in the video above, her life has been a rollercoaster ever since.

One of the dips was, no doubt, her loss to rock opera singer Cristina Ramos on episode two of this spin-off show. That 2016 winner of “Spain’s Got Talent” wowed the crowd with her over-the-top rendition of the Queen classic “Bohemian Rhapsody.” She earned won more votes from the superfans

Mahershala Ali (‘Green Book’) could win a 2nd Oscar faster than any actor in 24 years

Mahershala Ali (‘Green Book’) could win a 2nd Oscar faster than any actor in 24 years
Mahershala Ali is comfortably out front to win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for “Green Book” after his wins at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards. But there remains a big unanswered question about this race: will the academy want to reward him again so soon? It has been just two years since he won for “Moonlight.” That’s not unprecedented, of course, but you have to go back decades to find actors who claimed two Oscars so quickly.

No one has won multiple acting Oscars in two years or less in any category since Tom Hanks went back-to-back in the Best Actor race: “Philadelphia” (1993) and “Forrest Gump” (1994) — that’s 24 years ago. You have to go back a lot farther than that to find such a quick repeat specifically in the Best Supporting Actor race. It happened to Jason Robards 41 years ago when he won two in a

Like father, like son, John David Washington could mirror Denzel’s Oscar precursor run

Like father, like son, John David Washington could mirror Denzel’s Oscar precursor run
BlacKkKlansman” star John David Washington is trying to follow in dad Denzel‘s footsteps and make them the second father-son duo to receive acting Oscar nominations after Kirk and Michael Douglas. If the younger Washington does make the Best Actor shortlist, he’ll definitely prove to be his father’s kid, because he’ll have done so with the same major precursor nominations his dad had last year.

John David, who inherited his pops’ voice in addition to his acting skills, earned Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations for his performance as Detective Ron Stallworth, but he was skipped over at Critics’ Choice and BAFTA. Denzel only had Globe and SAG bids under his belt last year en route to an Oscar nomination for “Roman J. Israel, Esq.” That was actually the second time Denzel made the Oscar five with that combo since BAFTA became a precursor 18 years

Oscars: Jack Mathews surveys the Best Picture field

Oscars: Jack Mathews surveys the Best Picture field
A Star is Born” leads the pack in total guild nominations to date by a healthy margin of 11 to the eight for “BlackKlansman” and “Bohemian Rhapsody,” with only the sound editors yet to be heard from. But its own star has been fading with the televised Golden Globe and Critics Choice awards. It won Best Song at both and Lady Gaga tied for Best Actress with Glenn Close (“The Wife”) at the Critics Choice. That’s it.

So, yeah, it’s had a lock on nominations with all of the major guilds, but it no longer feels like the movie to beat for a Best Picture Oscar and its director and co-star Bradley Cooper is a long shot in both categories.

Every movie on the leader board has issues that handicappers can use in making their arguments for and against, but the thing I believe is costing “A Star is Born

Dua Lipa’s New Rules for 2019

Dua Lipa’s New Rules for 2019
What are Dua Lipa’s new rules for 2019? There’s just one: “Working really hard to get my new album out. Those are the only rules that I’m gonna be living by. I’m just going to be in the studio making sure that I come back with some fun stuff for everyone.”

That sounds about right. The London pop phenom blew up with hits like “New Rules” and “Idgaf,” full of disco glitz and tough talk about her post-break-up regimen for taking control and leaving that ex behind.

Christian Bale knocks Bradley Cooper out of top spot in Best Actor Oscar predictions

Christian Bale knocks Bradley Cooper out of top spot in Best Actor Oscar predictions
No. 2 has become No. 1. Christian Bale, who’s already won a Golden Globe and two Critics’ Choice Awards for his performance as Dick Cheney in “Vice,” is now the Best Actor Oscar frontrunner in our latest predictions.

On the heels of his Best Actor and Best Actor in a Comedy victories at Sunday’s Critics’ Choice Awards, Bale has inched past Bradley Cooper (“A Star Is Born”) with 19/5 odds to 39/10. However, our Experts are split between the two: 11 are backing Bale and 12 have Cooper. Bale has the edge with our Editors (four to one) and our Top 24 Users (10 to seven).

Cooper had been the frontrunner the entire season, but he hasn’t claimed a major prize yet. At the Globes, he lost the drama category to Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”) before falling to Bale at Critics’ Choice. “A Star Is Born” has underperformed so far in general, with just twin

Laura Dern Had a Jurassic Park Reunion at the Critics' Choice, Because Life, Uh, Finds a Way

Laura Dern Had a Jurassic Park Reunion at the Critics' Choice, Because Life, Uh, Finds a Way
Jurassic Park was "alive" at the 2019 Critics' Choice Awards. That's according to Laura Dern, who shared a sweet reunion and stopped to take a selfie with Joe Mazzello at the event. Though it might be hard to tell because he's a full adult now - time flies, huh? - Mazzello portrayed Tim Murphy, grandson to Jurassic Park's kooky creator, in the beloved '90s film. The actor would go on to appear in the sequel, while Dern had a brief appearance in the third installment. Mazzello shared the same selfie on his Instagram, and described it as the highlight of his night.

Dern was at the award show because she was nominated for best actress in a movie made for TV or limited series for her role in The Tale. Mazzello, meanwhile, was in attendance with the Bohemian Rhapsody cast, as he portrayed Queen bassist John Deacon in the film.

Is ‘A Star Is Born’ in danger of being the 6th film to go 0-4 at the SAG Awards?

Is ‘A Star Is Born’ in danger of being the 6th film to go 0-4 at the SAG Awards?
A Star Is Born” leads the Screen Actors Guild Awards with four nominations and is one of 18 films to get four bids. But might it walk away empty-handed? If it does, it’d be the sixth movie to go 0-4.

The film is up for ensemble, lead actor for Bradley Cooper, lead actress for Lady Gaga and supporting actor for Sam Elliott, but it’s currently not projected to win any of them in on our combined odds. “A Star Is Born” is in second to “Black Panther” in ensemble, while Christian Bale (“Vice”) and Glenn Close (“The Wife”) have leapfrogged over one-time favorites Cooper and Gaga following their Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice victories. And Elliott is in third place, trailing Richard E. Grant (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?”) and Globe and Critics’ Choice champ Mahershala Ali (“Green Book”).
