Good Ideas and Quality Acting Elude "Escapee"

Escapee is the story of a high-security inmate who busts out of prison to go after the young psychology student he's obsessed with. A pretty simple story, for sure, but a classic one.

I'm a fan of Dominic Purcell. I think the man is an intimidating presence while also being badass enough to play a grounded, tough hero. Similar to Joel Schumacher's Blood Creek which is a smart, exciting movie, wherein Purcell delivers, he delivers in Escapee just the same, more or less. Even though the script suffers from some horrific moments of exposition, it's not entirely terrible. However, the movie is fairly by-the-numbers, which might be a problem for some, and it's also a tad ridiculous. The notion that a group of college students would just be lined against the wall while a dangerous prisoner is transferred from one cell to another is completely ridiculous. Granted, I don't

Blu Review: Escapee

  • Cinelinx
I love a good slasher movie just as much as the next horror fan. The sub-genre is so hit-and-miss these days. For every Cold Prey or Laid to Rest, we're given 10 more entries that leave you feeling mentally drained by the time the credits roll on them. Anchor Bay Entertainment's Escapee is just lucky enough to fall right in the middle of good and bad in the realm of watchable mediocrity.

Psychology student Abby Jones (Christine Evangelista) makes the mistake of locking eyes with a murderous patient named Harmon (Dominic Purcell) while on a class trip to the local mental institute. Unfortunately, Abby resembles Harmon's girlfriend that he brutally butchered. He escapes from the hospital and heads out in search of Abby, leaving a trail of dead bodies in his wake.

Director / writer Campion Murphy put together the right ingredients for Escapee. The problem is the formula he concocts is overused.

Rosewood Lane Adds Rose McGowan

Rosewood Lane Adds Rose McGowan
Rose McGowan (Conan the Barbarian, Planet Terror) joins famed thriller film director Victor Salva (Jeepers Creepers, Powder) in Rosewood Lane as he goes back to his roots creating a new nightmare every bit as original as his Jeepers Creepers franchise.

The story follows McGowan as she plays Doctor Sonny Blake, a radio talk show psychiatrist, when she moves back to her childhood home after her alcoholic father dies. Once back in her old neighborhood she discovers the local paperboy is a frightening and cunning young sociopath that targeted her father and now targets her. When the boy starts calling her show and recites eerie nursery rhymes, an unnerving game of cat-and-mouse begins. When the game escalates, she suddenly finds herself in a terrifying all out war, one that forces her to redefine her ideas of good and evil, and has her fighting to stay alive.

Victor Salva, Director of Jeepers Creepers says,

A Murderous Rampage in 'Escapee'

I always hate when a press release is vague as I never know if we should be covering the film. It was announced today that production has started on the psychological thriller Escapee from Hollywood Media Bridge and Tall Tales Entertainment in association with Voltage Pictures and Nantucket Productions. Sounding like it could be quite violent, Dominic Purcell from "Prison Break" stars as a psychotic criminal who escapes from a secure hospital and embarks on a murderous spree in search of a specific female target, played by Christine Evangelista. Campion Murphy wrote and is directing. The story is based on events that took place in one of the producers hometown of Alexandria, Louisiana, and also stars Melissa Ordway, Carly Chaikin and Scott Michael Elrod.
