- Paul discovers his wife's affair and demands a divorce.
- Paul receives a promotion at work, and attends a congratulatory dinner without Cathy. Adam attends a house party, where teen-aged peer pressure places him between a rock and a hard place, which he makes all the worse by his actions following a comment by Andrea. And upon hearing whether she's been accepted into an experimental therapy clinical trial, Cathy embarks upon another of her life firsts, this one she shares with Lenny. These three events converge in a couple of revelations, a car accident, and a decision by Paul as to his future with Cathy. Meanwhile, Sean sets Marlene up on a date. And Cathy learns that Dr. Todd is ready to pop the question to his girlfriend.—Huggo
- Cathy teaches Adam to drive in the driveway. Paul pulls up on his Vespa and wonders why she's teaching their 14 year old son to drive.
Paul gives her grief for running off to the Bahamas. Adam storms off. He mentions he got a promotion and she gamely offers to go along to the celebratory dinner with him. He declines, suggesting she'd just ruin that, too.
Cathy meets with Dr. Mauer, not thrilled about having to pay the remaining 30 percent of her scan costs. "We'll have to save those for fancy occasions, we can't just be passing them out like mints," she says. She asks about a clinical trial, no word yet.
She notices an engagement ring on his laptop and asks when he's getting married. She recommends the Bahamas. He thinks Paul went with her, but she says she went alone.
Dr. Mauer thinks Paul bailed on her when she got sick. She doesn't set him straight.
In summer school she shows her class the bottle of pills someone left yesterday. Andrea isn't feeling helpful.
Lenny stops by. He recognizes the pills as Ectasy and recommends she not take them all at once unless she wants to feel like she's living in a bad Disney movie.
Cathy comes home to find Adam cutting Sean's hair in the kitchen. Adam announces he's going to a friend's birthday party that night. He proudly shows Cathy something from her list of three survival meals and one romantic dessert that he made. Chocolate mousse.
She tries it and allows him to go.
Marlene comes over for ice cubes. Sean wants to set her up with his friend Earl. "Why? You think all old people are soul mates?" she says. But she agrees.
Cathy leaves to take a call from Dr. Mauer in the bathroom. She didn't get into the clinical trial. She wipes away tears and makes a call. "I need an escape," she announces.
Cathy sits with Lenny on her back porch, waiting for the E to kick in. She warns him not to play ABBA so she won't break out dancing.
Adam shows up at a party with Trevor. There are no parents, contrary to what he told Cathy. Andrea takes him to get a drink.
Cathy asks Lenny what he thinks happen when you die. He tells her he thinks people's energy goes back into the universe. Cathy is super into it. She announces she's not afraid of anything anymore, including death or sharks. She's hot and unbuttons her shirt.
Paul comes in the front door, announcing he forgot his tie. Cathy and Lenny are making out on the back porch. Paul sees them and leaves.
Sean chaperones a date with Earl and Marlene. They're both making appropriate old-people jokes when Earl takes things a whole different direction, bluntly offering up his bedroom services to Marlene. Sean starts to apologize for him, but Marlene is intrigued.
Paul joins his coworkers out at dinner to celebrate his promotion. He says Cathy had a previous engagement. Paul drinks up as his coworkers stare.
Cathy and Lenny lounge on the back porch. He tells her he feels lucky to have met her. She tells him she feels OK, and isn't worried how Adam will turn out. She asks him if he wants to see her "pool hole."
Back at dinner, Sean tries to get Earl to tell Marlene about himself, but he goes straight to what's in his pants. Sean is appalled, but Marlene doesn't bat an eye. Earl drops his silverware and asks Marlene to get it. Sean ducks under the table and finds Earl has dropped his pants.
Marlene drags Sean to the bathroom. She interrupts his apologies and tells him to quit getting in the way.
At the party, some guys try to get Adam to go have sex with a super drunk chick, then goad him by calling him a virgin. Trying to save him, Andrea steps in and says she knows he's not a virgin. One of the guys asks Adam if he slept with "this cow." Adam says "no way" and instantly regrets it when he sees how hurt and angry Andrea is.
At his work dinner, Paul keeps chugging. His gay coworker announces he and his partner just got married. Drunk Paul says he doesn't understand why gay people would want to get married. Paul's boss tries to shut him up but Paul announces he caught his wife "f---- a black guy."
At the party, Adam finds Andrea but doesn't dig himself out of it.
Adam takes out his phone.
Next to Cathy at the bottom of the pool hole, Cathy's phone rings. Adam's calling. But his mom is too busy having sex with Lenny to notice.
Cut to Adam in the car with Paul, asking if he's in trouble. Pan back and we see that Adam is driving because Paul has realized he's too drunk after coming to get him at the party.
Cathy and Lenny are cuddled up on the couch on the bottom of the pool hole when Cathy notices her phone. Adam called 11 times. She tells Lenny she's a mom and shouldn't act like this.
She calls Paul. We see his Volvo run off the road and paramedics nearby. He's walking around.
Cut to Cathy coming into the hospital. Paul says Adam has seven stitches, but will be fine. Adam hit a tree. Paul says he had too much to drink at dinner and let Adam drive. Paul innocently asks where Cathy was. Then he tells her he saw her.
Cathy walks away and finds Adam. He apologizes. So does she.
Paul is giving his name at the intake desk when Dr. Mauer comes over to introduce himself as Cathy's doctor. Then Mauer tells Paul he thinks it's "s---y" of him to move out of the house. Paul says he doesn't know what is going on with her.
Dr. Mauer finds Cathy to confront her about not telling Paul. She tells him she wants to be happy a little longer before everything is about her being sick. "Telling Paul I have cancer will not make me happy," she says. "How do you know?" Mauer asks.
Cathy finds Paul in the waiting room. She takes a deep breath, but he cuts her off. "I want a divorce," he says.
