In the near future or an alternate reality, there are memory detectives, people who have the ability to enter other people's electronically-aided memories. They often are used to resolve psychological conflicts, and sometimes to exonerate someone from a crime. John was at one time the top in this field, but he has been recovering from the death of his wifey, and a stroke. To get back into work the head of the small firm he works for offers him what is supposed to be a simple job - getting 16-year-old Anna to start eating again. Goofs
John tells Anna that when you re-experience your memories with the aid of a Mindscape operator you occasionally may see the operator in the distance but will be unable to identify him. This is obviously what happens to John when he is in jail and Lundgren goes through Johns memories. It is not possible for John to have a memory of confronting Robert, Anna's stepfather, about having him followed by this mysterious man, because at the time the memories were made he had never been followed. The mysterious man is part of him re-experiencing his memories at a much later date with Lundgrens help. Thus having memories of chasing Lundgren who was not there does not make sense as at the time he never chased anybody. See more »

It's always tough for a movie that tries to twist its way into your brain (no pun intended), to be 100 % successful. Still this has the actors to pull things off quite nicely. Mark Strong especially and Brian Cox in a smaller role are able to convey a very crazy idea to the viewer. You could say the idea is "far out".
But good science fiction is always bending boundaries. And the tapping into someones mind thing is not really new. There is more on the story that is apparent on the surface of course and there is a running theme, that is too obvious, but maybe a bit too much, if you think about it after watching the movie. Decent effort, but not really great
