CalArts Showcase Offers a Window Into Animation’s Next Generation

In certain ways, the May 2 CalArts Character Animation Producers’ Show resembled any number of other year-end showcases of undergrad work held by art schools nationwide. Students gathered to cheer on their classmates, as 22 student-created animation shorts were screened, with four of them winning special awards. Alumni and faculty mingled in the aisles, using the event as a de facto reunion.

Of course, most other schools’ programs do not fill up the DGA Theater in Hollywood, and most mingling alumni do not include the likes of Pixar’s Pete Docter catching up with students and offering notes afterward. And it was hard to miss the entire rows roped off for representatives of every major player in animation: Disney, Pixar, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, DreamWorks, Netflix, Bento Box …. Begun in the 1980s, and slowly expanding in stature starting in the mid-’90s, CalArts’ showcase has evolved into something resembling a friendlier version of an NFL combine,

Regular Show returns 25 Years Later thanks to Boom! Studios

Boom! Studios and Carton Network have announced the upcoming launch of Regular Show: 25 Years Later, an all-new six-issue limited comic book series inspired by the Emmy Award-winning animated series.

“I love the relative elegance of a Regular Show story. Start with a mundane problem, try to weasel out of it, and then plunge into madness,” said writer Christopher Hastings. “The characters are completely grounded, have real relationships with each other, and then you take them and stick them in the most bonkers, surreal, fantasy/sci-fi/horror/everything impossible scenarios you can think of. It’s a simple combo, but it gives you room for a countless amount of new stories. The tricky part was figuring out how to get the older and Much more mature Mordecai and Rigby to jump into that dance again. They’ve traded their insane adventures for family and career. Seeing how these wiser old pals

Cartoon Network Provides New Scholarship to CalArts Animation Students

Cartoon Network has a long and successful history with graduates of the prestigious animation school at CalArts: Genndy Tartakovsky (“Dexter’s Laboratory,” “Samurai Jack,” “Star Wars: Clone Wars”), Craig McCracken (“The Powerpuff Girls”) and Pendleton Ward (“Adventure Time”), just to name a few.

So now, after a relationship of many years, Cartoon Network, which just celebrated its 25 anniversary last fall, has worked with the school to create an annual scholarship totaling $15,000 for pair of deserving students with an eye toward keeping the animation talent well filled.

“We tap into talent from everywhere, but a lot of the CalArts talent in particular has risen up to places of show creators like Genndy and Craig,” says Cartoon Network senior VP and general manager Brian Miller. “And that list continues to expand with people like Pen Ward and J.G. Quintel (“Regular Show”), and further from there to Daniel Chong (“We Bare Bears”), and it just continues.”

The first recipients

‘Cartoon Network Battle Crashers’ Review (Nintendo Switch)

When Uncle Grandpa accidentally flips the multidimensional switch on his Rv, he creates a tear in the universe that collides the worlds of some of Cartoon Network’s most beloved shows… That’s the set up for Cartoon Network Battle Crashers, the side-scrolling, kid-friendly beat ‘em-up from GameMill/Maximum Games – which has, a year on from its initial release, made it’s Nintendo Switch debut.

So how does it fair on Nintendo’s hybrid console? Well graphically it’s not a game that’s ever going to push the limits of the system, however the bright 2D character design and the variety of landscapes really showcases the Switch’s screen. Sadly the audio falls flat – through no fault of the console may I add – it seems that the developers were less concerned with how the game sounds in comparison to how it looks. Which is a shame as the particular
