Storyline

Jane and Maura's plan to run in the Massachusetts marathon is interrupted when they reach the 3 mile mark and find another runner collapsed on the road. They quickly determine that the man was shot but Jane is concerned that it not become widely known as it might induce panic among the half million spectators along the course. When a second man is shot at the 12 mile point, they realize the killer is likely a runner. Working with Frost and Korsak who are back at the office, they learn that the two men went to high school together. They also learn that the they, along with a third student, had gotten away with a vicious rape. Someone is clearly out for revenge and the police have to move quickly when they learn the third man is also among the runners. Written by garykmcd

Trivia

Characters throughout the episode question whether the murder is random or part of a larger terrorist attack. They quickly determine that they have a regular, targeted murder on their hands, and someone mentions the fact that the best place for a terrorist attack would be at the start or finish lines to maximize casualties.

Sadly, the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing did feature bombs detonated near the finish line. Since this episode aired almost three years before the real-life bombing, it's possible that the bombers could have gotten the idea for their plot from the show. See more »

Goofs

In the medical tent, when Dr. Isles (Sasha Alexander) is performing the impromptu autopsy of the first victim, she removes the bullet and shows it to Rizzoli (Angie Harmon). Rizzoli looks at the bullet and immediately proclaims it to be a 9mm. It is impossible to tell the difference between a 9mm, .380 ACP, .38, or a .357 without measuring the diameter with a micrometer and weighing the bullet. 9mm and .380 ACP bullets both have a true diameter of .355 inches and .38 and .357 Magnum bullets have a true diameter of .357 inches. That's only two one-thousandths of an inch difference, far too small a difference to be judged with the naked eye. Also, each of these bullet types come in a variety of bullet weights that can differ from a similarly weighted bullet in one the other calibers by mere tenths or even hundredths of a gram (i.e., 9mm 147 grain bullet at 9.5 grams vs. 148 grain .38 bullet at 9.6 grams). However, Rizzoli habitually makes educated guesses about details of her cases. See more »
