MPAA Rated R for disturbing violent and sexual content

Sex & Nudity

  • A girl is harassed at school by a group of boys; a boy bullies her with mild verbal innuendo and shows her a crude drawing of a nude woman (drawn from behind; no nudity).
  • An 18-year-old girl in a shower is seen masturbating. Only side buttocks is shown and very brief side breast.
  • A man and a woman kiss passionately at several points; she moves his hand to her clothed breast. Most scenes are standing or slow-dancing, but in one such scene they're lying down together and he's on top of her.

Violence & Gore

  • A woman jabs a man in the throat with a large pair of gardening shears. We don't see her physically shove it in the neck, but we see the blood spray followed by the man grabbing at his very bloody neck.
  • The violence in the film is candid, but handled matter-of-factly.
  • A boy acts as if he is going to punch a girl in the face, grunting and stopping only inches before hitting her. She does not flinch and ignores him.
  • A woman is strangled; screaming and thrashing is briefly heard but the killing is not shown onscreen, as the scene cuts away as she begins to scream.
  • A woman's corpse is uncovered in a freezer. There are no marks or blood.
  • A man goes to punch a woman. She retaliates by stabbing his fist with a pencil she is holding in her hand. There is no injury seen but blood is shown on the pencil. The pencil is later sharpened, with beads of blood dripping from the pencil sharpener making a squishing sound.
  • A man bashes another man's head in with a rock. Some blood spatters onto the attacker's face the victim's beaten face is briefly shown.
  • A young man's neck is snapped with a belt. He is then buried.
  • A woman shoots a man in the neck offscreen. We see the aftermath, with blood glistening on a red wall and his corpse briefly shown. A trail of dried blood is also shown as the body is implied to have been dragged away and buried.
  • Both humans hunting animals with guns and animal predators hunting in the wild, is a motif of the film. A girl is shown hunting with her father, but the emphasis is not on the harm to the animal; a bullet is shown hitting a bird and blood briefly spatters. A wildlife documentary is shown showing a bird of prey picking at an animal carcass.

  • One f-word (barely audible), four uses of "sh*t", one use of "bitch", one mild obscenity, and one minced oath.
  • A teen boy harasses the main character in a crude verbal reference to incest, saying, "Hey Stoker; or do you you go by 'Stroker' now, because I hear that's what your mom's been doing to your uncle. Have you been getting in on that?"

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Adults and an 18-year-old girl are shown drinking red wine in two or three scenes. No one becomes intoxicated or visibly inebriated, but a woman's comments suggest that she may be planning to drink more (that she will "have a headache" in the morning) and a woman's moodiness and depression may be exacerbated by alcohol, but this is never explicitly stated or shown.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Though the film isn't that violent, most of the movie is dark, suspenseful, and frightening. It deals with themes about death, love, sexuality, psychosis, murder, jealousy, and incest. A majority of the themes are not directly depicted, but implied and/or left to the viewer's interpretation.

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • A teen boy and girl begin to passionately kiss; the boy attempts to rape the girl, handling her violently and while taking off his belt.

Violence & Gore

  • A police officer is stabbed in the neck with a pair of hedge clippers. Blood is shown spraying from his neck; he crawls into a field of wheat and is shot offscreen with blood spraying onto flowers.
  • A child is murdered by being buried alive. The burial itself is not shown, but is clearly implied (see Frightening/Intense Scenes below).
  • A woman is strangled with a belt. She does not die, but is shown gasping and choking while struggling, with strong red marks on her throat.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • An attempted rape is depicted; the perpetrator's neck is then snapped and he is buried. An 18-year-old girl later masturbates while thinking of this murder (see Sex & Nudity for more information).
  • The death of a child and subsequent institutionalization of the older child responsible is a major plot point. The older child is never shown in the act of killing the younger one, but it is unmistakably suggested and the scene may be very upsetting.
