Dexter's interview with the FBI goes well he's told they don't suspect him of murder since he was at Trinity's house at the time Rita was killed. He's having trouble being a single parent however. Astor and Cody want to move back into their house - they're all living temporarily with Debra in what is now a very overcrowded apartment - and when they skip school one day to go there, Dexter realizes something has to be done. Meanwhile, Debra is also a bit fed up with the situation and goes over to Quinn's for a decent night's sleep. Dexter focuses on a new serial killer as his next victim.
Dexter is interviewed by the FBI and finds out that the agents do not suspect him but are trying to figure out why Trinity murdered Rita. The prime suspect is Kyle Butler but the FBI does not have any clue as to who Kyle Butler really is. Dexter finds blood in a moving truck and he rents the van. During the night, he discovers that it is indeed human blood and he finds the name of Boyd Fowler as the last person who rented the vehicle. Meanwhile his colleagues are investigating a victim that was decapitated in a Venezuelan neighborhood and a local police officer believes that the responsible gang is Santa Muerte. Quinn suspects that Dexter might have killed Rita and he asks LaGuerta for a copy of the sketches of the suspect. Astor does not want to stay with Dexter and she calls her grandparents to ask if she can live with them and Dexter convinces Cody to stay with his sister. Dexter stalks Boyd and discovers barrels that he dumped in a lake. When he opens the barrels, he finds young women preserved in formaldehyde.
In his new role as single father, an anxious Dexter tries to get his family's routine back on track, to begin the process of moving on from Rita's death. Dexter attempts to focus all his attention on the kids while curbing his dark urges. But when evidence of foul play falls into his lap, Dexter makes a horrific discovery, setting him on the trail of his next victim. Debra, trying to be the good sister, shares her apartment with Dexter and the kids only to find there's no room for her. Miami Metro has their work cut out when a grisly scene is found in a Venezuelan neighborhood.

Dexter and Debra bring the kids to her apartment. Cody seems cool with the whole situation but Astor is upset. Dexter is looking for apartments.
Dexter finally sits down with the FBI and we learn they know he has an iron-clad alibi but are just trying to figure out why Mitchell would have targeted Rita.
At work Dexter is told he needs to take a week off. The feds tell Maria & Co. that all they have to go on is the name Kyle Butler. They plan to have a sketch artist work up a face. Angel accidentally sees one of Maria's bank statements and realizes she has almost $270,000 in savings.
Dexter rents a moving van. He spots one with a few drops blood on the floor and goes with that one.
Elliot stops by and talks to Dexter about the demands of being a single parent. Dexter doesn't seem interested in the pep talk.
Grandparents help move and Debra's apartment is a madhouse. Astor continues to be miserable that she can't go home.
That night Dexter and Harrison each have trouble sleeping. He takes the baby into the moving van and examines the blood. He finds a huge spatter on the inside consistent with blunt force trauma of someone kneeling. Dexter jumps online and finds the last person to rent the van was a Boyd Fowler who listed the sanitation department as his address. Boyd works for the department of dead animal pick-up. Dexter tests the hand prints from the van and finds out they were human.
Dexter plants a dead raccoon on the street in order to meet Boyd. He gets Boyd to admit he hasn't moved in 20 years.
Quinn, Debra and Angel arrive at the scene of a murder. They have only the decapitated head of a female victim. Quinn believes it is consistent with a drug killing. Angel asks Quinn about account. Masuka tells them the head was decapitated while the woman was sill alive. Quinn offers his couch to an exhausted Debra. A local cop tells Debra the candles and icons around the head seems to indicate Santa Muerte, a local cult. She thinks the woman was probably killed with a machete. The body is found on the other side of the neighborhood.
Dexter can't figure out how to help the kids deal with their loss. He finds online that Boyd did time for assault with a deadly weapon. He finds his house online. Debra comes home and Dexter tells her the kids are going to see a grief counselor.
The tired Debra goes to Quinn's place to sleep. He tries to kiss her but she isn't having it. She basically doesn't want to acknowledge they had sex.
During breakfast Astor has a meltdown based on plates. Cody is upset that Dexter and Astor seem to be arguing so much.
Based on a suggestion from Debra Masuka finds out that it was a machete that decapitated the woman. Angel asks Debra about Maria's account.
Quinn and Debra are called to a another body, this one the result of a shotgun wound the head. It is the boyfriend or husband of the decapitated woman, though there are none of the trappings of Santa Muerte.
Dexter goes to Boyd's house. While he snoops around Boyd comes home for lunch. While Boyd listens to a self-help tape and looks for soup Dexter find a numbered lock of human hair and is able to sneak out undetected.
Debra and Quinn check out an open house for Dexter. Quinn pretends they are a couple.
Dexter follows Boyd to the middle of nowhere and watches him dump a barrel into a small body of water. He suspects it is animal remains but before he can check Debra calls to say the kids never went to school.
Dexter finds Astor and Cody at the house looking at the bathtub where Rita was killed. Astor says Dexter "ruined everything" and says she wants to live with her grandparents.
Quinn asks Maria if he can check out the Kyle Butler sketches, which seem to be different based on which of Millers relatives gave the description.
Angel asks Maria about the money. She says it wasn't a secret and suggests Angel isn't as smart with his money as she is. This offends Angel and he walks into the office and tells the crowd drinks are on him that night.
That night Dexter tells Debra that both kids are going to Orlando with Rita's parents. Cody wanted to stay but Dexter told him it was important he stay with his sister.
Debra calls Quinn and finally acknowledges that they slept together. He is piecing together the sketches and finding a face that looks similar to Dexter.
A guy comes up to a drunken Angel at the bar and makes a few inappropriate comments about Angel's new wife. Angel is furious and gets into a physical altercation with the man, which leads to Vince getting slugged as well.
The kids leave with Grandparents. Cody is crying. Before she leaves Dexter tells Astor he loves her.
We see Dexter finally go back and check Boyd's little pond. He pops open the barrel and finds a woman inside. He looks around and sees there are at least a half dozen more barrels. Dexter tells Harry he isn't sure having a new target will help him feel better.
