Film Review: ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet’

  • Variety
After going from 8-bit zero to arcade hero during his original outing, Wreck-It Ralph levels up in a big way with “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” an ambitious, all-around-satisfying sequel to Walt Disney Animation’s wonderfully outside-the-box smash that ranks among the studio’s very best toons: It’s a poignant buddy movie that’s sincere in all the right places but knows better than to take itself too seriously. While the 2012 project was an inspired example of easily expandable world-building, this more-clever-than-expected follow-up skips the obvious next step — simply exploring the other games that share the same power strip — and sets out to conquer the relative vastness of cyberspace instead.

That’s a lofty goal for any sequel, further complicated by the fact that reformed bad guy Ralph (voiced by lovable lug John C. Reilly) has made friends with fellow misfit Vanellope von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman), which calls for an all-new dynamic.

Review: Muse Get Lost in the Eighties on ‘Simulation Theory’

The first LP from Muse since their 2015 album Drones is a throwback to the first seven years of the Eighties. The tom-toms are cavernous like a Jan Hammer or Phil Collins production on the Miami Vice soundtrack. The dystopian, technophobic action movie narrative seems in the same vein as films like The Running Man and The Terminator. A band that’s logged nearly 20 years in the major label rock sphere, Muse mixed Radiohead’s alt-rock shirt-pullers with Queen’s triumphant heft in epic jams about theoretical physics, systems science and environmental philosophy.

Warner Bros. Buys Rights to Sci-Fi Dystopia Novels

David Crow Nov 9, 2018

WB buys rights to new dystopia series, Fka USA, that imagines a fallen United States after climate change and "the final president."

The future is coming and it looks bleak. Yes, that could be the analysis of more than 97 percent of scientists in the world, but it’s also the take of Fka USA, a book series that hasn’t even launched, yet has already seen its rights sold to Warner Bros. for a reported seven-figure sum. The news was broken by Deadline that WB has bought the rights to Reed King’s dystopic view of the future in Fka USA, a book series that will debut in a novel of the same name in June 2019.

Published by Amy Einhorn and Flatiron books, Fka USA is set in a tomorrow where where environmental disasters and “the catastrophic policies” of the United States’ final president has led to the disintegration of the union.

Fka USA imagines a United States where, in the wake of environmental disasters and the catastrophic policies of its final president, the Fifty States have seceded and given way to a series of lawless territories. The story centers on four characters – a factory worker in Crunchtown 407, a talking goat, an android who wants to be human, and a former convict lobotomized in Texas – who are unexpectedly entrusted with a sensitive political mission on which the fate of the world may just depend. The sci-fi novel is described as being reminiscent of A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, The Wizard of Oz, and Ready Player One.

Black Panther’s Letitia Wright to star in Le Brio remake

Variety is reporting that Black Panther star Letitia Wright is set to executive produce and star in a remake of the Cesar-nominated French comedy drama Le Brio, which is being produced by Dimitri Rassam (The Little Prince) and John Legend’s Get Lifted Film Company.

The 2017 film revolves around the relationship between a young French-Arab woman from an underprivileged neighbourhood and a brilliant but prejudiced professor who is forced to coach her for an annual speech contest. Wright will take on the role of the female lead in the remake, which will “explore the complex relationship between a student and a professor who come from different ethnic and social backgrounds”, although it will drop the speech competition angle.

“With Get Lifted Film Company’s great creative input, the remake will have more of a political bend than the French film to reflect the current tense climate and race relations in U.

Hereford Films Announce ‘Krays’ Sequel ‘Marked For Death’

Following on from the phenomenal success of this year’s The Krays – Dean Man Walking, Hereford Films has announced a follow-up – The Krays 2 – Marked For Death.

Credit: Hereford Films

According to an official press release, received from Hereford this morning, the film will focus on another untold chapter of the notorious twins’ lives: their run-in with former boxer Freddie Mills, who was suspected of being the serial killer known as ‘Jack The Stripper’ and who some say paid the Krays to murder him and make it look like suicide. Hereford will cast a ‘guest star’ as Mills, similar to Rita Simons’ starring role in the first film and casting is underway.

Producer Adam Stephen Kelly commented, “the formula for the first film – picking a previously untold story from the Krays’ lives and casting a significant guest star to anchor it – worked incredibly well and so we are repeating it. So

‘Fantastic Beasts 2’ on Pace to Match Original’s Opening Weekend

  • The Wrap
The first round of box office tracking is in for Warner Bros.’ “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” and early tracking shows the film has a strong chance to match the opening weekend of its 2016 predecessor.

As is common with big releases, estimates from trackers vary. One tracker is currently projecting an opening of $63 million, while another is projecting the sequel to come close to the first “Fantastic Beasts” opening of $74.4 million.

But with three weeks until the film’s release, there’s a lot of potential for the film to gain more buzz among Harry Potter fans. While the first film’s marketing focused on what separated this new installment of J.K. Rowling’s “Wizarding World” from the Potter series — new characters, new creatures and a magical New York — this film is being treated more as a prequel to Rowling’s legendary boy wizard saga.
