Michel Hazanavicius teams with Omar Sy, Bérénice Bejo for 'The Lost Prince'
Pathé will release in France whilst Studiocanal will commence worldwide sales in Cannes.

The Lost Prince, the new film from director by Michel Hazanavicius, has been unveiled.

The Studiocanal, Prélude, Pathé, and TF1 Films co-production stars Omar Sy (The Intouchables), François Damiens (Just To Be Sure) and Bérénice Bejo (The Artist).

Pathé will release in France whilst Studiocanal will commence worldwide sales in the Cannes market.

The shoot starts July 30 and is scheduled to wrap on October 5.

The project revolves around Djibi, a father who tells his seven-year-old daughter Sofia fairytales about a fantasy film studio called “Storyland” with himself as Prince Charming.

Milli Vanilli Biopic Producers Hope End of Ratner Deal Could Revive Long-Gestating Project
The history of the Untitled Millie Vanilli movie has been almost as much of a byzantine roller coaster ride as the duo’s infamous career. The latest roadblock for the biopic, which dates back to a 2007 screenplay by fan Jeff Nathanson, who wanted to direct the film himself, was the demise of Brett Ratner’s $450 million co-financing deal with Warner Bros. for his RatPac Entertainment, which the studio officially announced it wouldn’t renew on April 10. The company was responsible for some of the studio’s biggest hits last year, including “Wonder Woman,” “It,” “Dunkirk” and “The Lego Batman Movie.”

Ratner, the mercurial filmmaker, was set to take the director’s chair for the proposed $20-30 million production, helming his first project since 2014’s “Hercules.” Shooting was planned for both Berlin and Los Angeles, but once Ratner became the subject of sexual harassment accusations late last year, the momentum stopped.

Beta Film Boards Period Drama ‘Victor Hugo – Enemy of the State’ (Exclusive)

Beta Film has scored a major deal ahead of MipTV, scooping international rights to high-end period drama “Victor HugoEnemy of the State,” which it will bring to the market.

The limited series hails from Quad, the production company behind box office hit “The Intouchables.” The French production will be on France 2 domestically. Production is underway in Paris, northern France, and the Dordogne, and will continue until mid-May. Beta Film will kick off the pre-sales effort in earnest at MipTV.

The four-part drama will tell the story of Hugo, the author of “Les Misérables,” which is itself being remade as a miniseries for the BBC.

UniFrance, Miami Festival’s Third Mercado Lures Top Latin American Distributors, French Sales Agents
Top Latin American distributors ranging from Brazil’s Imovision to Mexico’s Cinepolis and Colombia’s Babilla Cine flocked to the third edition of the Mercado del Cine Frances, a mini-market jointly launched by promotion organization UniFrance and Miami Film Festival.

Spearheaded by UniFrance’s executives Gilles Renouard and Delphine Martin, the three-day initiative which kicked off March 10, was created to connect French sales agents from key banners such as Studiocanal, Gaumont, Playtime, Bac Films, Pyramide, Charades and Loco Films, with Latin American distributors outside of a major festival to forge ties and encourage dealmaking.

Like other initiatives organized by UniFrance in Paris, New York, Seoul and Tokyo, several French films were showcased as part of the event, including Xavier Legrand’s “Custody,” Michel Hazanavicius’s “Redoutable” (pictured), Marc Dugain’s “The Royal Exchange,” Olivier Ayache-Vidal’s “The Teacher” and Agnes Jaoui’s “Place Publique.”

This year’s Cesar Awards pit old-school establishment contenders against a younger, more independent guard that might not have been so readily acknowledged a decade or two ago.

Neil Burger to Direct Adaptation of Purple Heart Veteran Mary Jennings Hegar’s Memoir (Exclusive)
Divergent” helmer Neil Burger will direct an untitled film based on the memoir by Purple Heart veteran Maj. Mary Jennings Hegar, sources tell Variety.

Angelina Jolie is circling the lead role of Hegar. The Gotham Group is producing.

The current draft of the movie will be written by Alice O’Neill and Burger; the previous versions of the screenplay were penned by Frank Baldwin and Jason Hall. O’Neill and Burger most recently collaborated on the Showtime series “Billions,” where O’Neill currently serves as story editor, and Burger served as an executive producer and directed the first two episodes. They also co-wrote the screenplay “Tara Delaney,” with Burger also attached to direct.

The book was originally brought to the studio by Nicole Brown, who will oversee the project with Hannah Minghella.

CanneSeries to Close with Michael C. Hall’s ‘Safe’

CanneSeries announced Wednesday that a first screening of author Harlan Coben’s “Safe,” produced by Studiocanal’s Red Production Company (“Happy Valley”), will bring down the curtain on the inaugural edition of the week-long TV festival.

Running April 4-11, the major international part of CannSeries takes place at Cannes’ Palais des Festivals, parallel to the well-established MipTV market.

Joining Coben for the closing ceremonies will be the series’ lead actors, Michael C. Hall (“Dexter,” “Six Feet Under”) and Audrey Fleurot (“The Intouchables,” “Midnight in Paris”).

The series is produced by Nicola Shindler’s Manchester-based Red for C8 in France, and Netflix internationally.

Robin Campillo’s “BPM (Beats Per Minute),” Albert Dupontel’s “Au revoir là-haut,” Mathieu Amalric’s “Barbara,” and Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache’s “C’est la Vie” lead the nominations for the Cesar Awards, France’s equivalent of the Oscars.

“Bpm,” a sprawling and intense drama following French AIDS activists in 1980s Paris, will vie for a record 13 Cesar Awards, including best film, director, male newcomers (Nahuel Pérez Biscayart, Arnaud Valois), script (Campillo and Philippe Mangeot), supporting actor (Antoine Reinartz), supporting actress (Adele Haenel), costumes (Isabelle Pannetier), design (Emmanuelle Duplay), score (Arnaud Rebotini), cinematography (Jeanne Lapoirie), and editing (Campillo).

Since winning Cannes Film Festival’s Grand Jury Prize, “Bpm” has garnered several accolades overseas, notably the New York, Los Angeles and Washington critics’ awards for best foreign-language film. It also picked up prizes at the Chicago and San Sebastian film festivals. However, it was snubbed by both the Golden Globes and the Oscars.

Dublin Film Festival unveils 2018 line-up

The Audi Dublin International Film Festival (Feb 21- Mar 4) has announced its 2018 line-up.

Opening the 16th iteration of the event is the Irish premiere of Black 47. Lance Daly’s Great Famine-set thriller stars James Frecheville, Barry Keoghan, Moe Dunford, Hugo Weaving and Stephen Rea.

The closing night gala is C’est La Vie, from Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano (The Intouchables).

Playwright and screenwriter Mark O’Rowe’s directing debut The Delinquent Season is one of seven world premieres. The cast includes Cillian Murphy and Eva Birthistle, both of whom will attend.

Other world premieres include Stacy Cochran’s Write When You Get Work and artist Alan Gilsenan’s The Meeting.

Gaumont Expands to Germany, Appoints Warner Bros. Executive (Exclusive)
Gaumont, the venerable film and TV studio behind French comedy blockbuster “The Intouchables” and hit Netflix series “Narcos,” is set to expand in Germany with the launch of a new office in Cologne.

Scheduled for a July 1 launch, the German division will be headed by Sabine de Mardt, who previously served as head of film and fiction at Warner Bros. Intl. TV Production Deutschland. She will report to Christophe Riandee, vice CEO of Gaumont.

“As we have done in the U.S., we are now establishing Gaumont in Germany to produce local content in the local language,” said Gaumont CEO Sidonie Dumas, who described de Mardt as a “well-respected development, production and creative executive with a highly successful track record.”

“With today’s audiences around the globe now used to watching shows in the original language, we also anticipate strong demand for these programs from our overseas broadcast partners,” Dumas said, referring most notably

The Weinstein Company yanked its first three movies of 2018 from its calendar, pulling The War with Grandpa from its February 23 date, The Upside from its March 9 date and Mary Magdalene from its March 30 date. It is believed that these movies were pulled in anticipation of the company being sold off to new owners, in the aftermath of the Harvey Weinstein sex scandal. None of these films were given new dates as of now, listed as "unset 2018" at the moment. There is no indication yet as to who could be taking over The Weinstein Company, or when they may decide what to do with these films.

Robin Campillo’s AIDS activist drama BPM (Beats Per Minute) leads the pack with six nominations for this year’s Lumiere Awards, with nods in the best film, best director and best acting categories, among others.

The film is France’s entry in the Oscar best foreign-language film category and took home the Grand Prize in Cannes earlier this year.

The heavyweights of the French film industry condemned Harvey Weinstein in a statement issued Monday, with The Artist director Michel Hazanvicius, Intouchables helmers Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano and veteran filmmakers Claude Lelouch and Costa Gavras signing a letter from Arp, the producers, directors and writers guild.

Titling it “Acts Unworthy,” the guild wrote: “The filmmakers of Arp join together in the unequivocal condemnation of Harvey Weinstein, after the revelations about him.”

The guild called the allegations of years of sexual harassment and assault “shameful and unacceptable.”
