7 Female-Centric Coming-of-Age Movies to Watch If You Loved ‘Lady Bird’

7 Female-Centric Coming-of-Age Movies to Watch If You Loved ‘Lady Bird’
It’s the honesty of Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird” that really makes the Saoirse Ronan-starring coming-of-age movie sing. Yes, it’s very funny and filled with enough genuinely great performances that it’s actually debatable which supporting star turns in the best work (it’s Laurie Metcalf, or maybe Beanie Feldstein, or possibly Tracy Letts), but what makes Gerwig’s movie such a gem is the honesty that infuses every part and every scene. Ronan’s ChristineLady Bird” McPherson is a work-in-progress, but she’s also kind of a jerk, and Gerwig never shies away from showing the angstier, angrier side of growing up.

So often, high school-set features tend to lean into the more fun side of those four years, building up to the big dance or the big test or the big graduation, and while Lady Bird is consumed with getting to the next step,

Exclusive: Beau Mirchoff Talks 'Flatliners' and His Real Near-Death Experience: I Thought 'This Is It'
You can call it Beau 2.0, but Beau Mirchoff won't.

The 28-year-old actor is known to many fans from MTV's high school comedy, Awkward, but his latest role is no Matty McKibben. In the year since Awkward's series finale, Mirchoff has graduated from high school to med school, with the upcoming film Flatliners

"I don't think I can play high school anymore, which is a good thing," Mirchoff told Et over the phone, insisting that he doesn't consider this the next chapter of his career. "I don't really look at it that way, [but] I feel like I've been evolving since Awkward.

The actor plays Brad, a "naive" medical student in Flatliners, a reimagining of the 1990 film of the same name, which centers on a group of students who conduct experiments trying to produce near-death experiences.

Trailer Watch: Teen Bloggers Become Murderers in “Tragedy Girls”

Tragedy Girls

X-Men: Apocalypse’s” Alexandra Shipp and “Deadpool’s” Brianna Hildebrand leave the superhero world behind for a “Heathers”-esque take on the slasher genre in “Tragedy Girls.” A trailer has dropped for the dark comedy-horror film that earned strong reviews out of SXSW, where it made its world premiere back in March.

“Sometimes I just feel like nothing I do matters — like I’m not special,” Sadie (Hildebrand) tells her Bff McKayla (Shipp) in the spot. She later observes that McKayla has only received one retweet that day, and it came from her mom. Feeling invisible, the highschoolers decide to ask a social media star to give their blog a shout-out, and when he declines, describing their project as “off-brand” for his “15 million followers,” Sadie and McKayla decide to take action. The girls stab him to death. They aren’t particularly competent murderers — McKayla complains, “You’re just hitting bone, dude,” as Kayla aims for his heart — but they manage to get the job done, and their lives change overnight.

The murder is all their town can talk about, and the girls use the fear, anxiety, and excitement to their advantage. “Anybody could be next, even you,” McKayla tells a classmate. Sadie reassures the terrified girl by telling her, “You can find more information on our Tragedy Girls Twitter page.” To keep their social media followers — and to gain more — the girls become serial killers.

Shipp’s previous credits include “Straight Outta Compton,” Showtime’s “Ray Donovan,” MTV’s “Awkward,” and the titular role in the Lifetime movie “Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B.” Shipp portrayed Storm in “X-Men: Apocalypse,” a character made famous by Halle Berry.

Hildebrand is best known for playing Negasonic Teenage Warhead in “Deadpool,” a role she’ll reprise in “Deadpool 2.” “First Girl I Loved” and “Prism” are among her other credits.

Tragedy Girls” hits theaters October 20.

8 Indies That Are Honest About Teen Sexuality, From ‘Blue Is the Warmest Color’ to ‘The Diary of a Teenage Girl’

8 Indies That Are Honest About Teen Sexuality, From ‘Blue Is the Warmest Color’ to ‘The Diary of a Teenage Girl’
Risky and risqué, indie films have always been a home for bold, honest, and controversial visions of teens’ sexuality. Eliza Hittman’s “Beach Rats,” opening this week after bowing at Sundance in January, is another notch in the belt of the sub-genre, a sensitive and often shocking look inside the coming-of-age of a young Brooklyn teen.

Like the best of these films, it’s not all about hormones; it builds on questions about identity and desire. But that’s there too, in sensitively crafted scenes that don’t skimp on reality. Punctuated by some bad choices and an unnerving final act, “Beach Rats” embraces the full spectrum of teen sexuality, even when it’s not exactly alluring.
