The new film, described as a “relaunch” of the series, has been penned by Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant (Night at the Museum), and also previously had Etan Cohen (Get Hard) attached to direct. As with the original, the movie will once again follow a group of rule-breaking misfits as they compete in an illegal cross-country road race from Connecticut to California.

The original 1981 film featured an all-star cast, including Burt Reynolds, Roger Moore, Farah Fawcett, Dean Martin, Dom DeLuise and Jackie Chan, all of whom played characters racing across America in a variety of cars to win a cash prize. It was directed by the legendary stuntman Hal Needham.
Here’s the official synopsis for the original.
Contestants in a cross-country car race from Connecticut to California include a speed-loving racing driver disguised as an ambulance driver and his dimwitted sidekick, a pair of Ferrari-driving priests, and a James Bond-type character kitted out with secret weapons. Jackie Chan appears in
It’s been somewhat of a winding road, pun intended, finding the right talent to bring this franchise back to life.

The original films starred Burt Reynolds, Frank Sinatra, Roger Moore, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Dom DeLuise. The story centered on an illegal cross-country race where the participants played dirty tricks on one another so that they could win. I assume the new film will feature the same premise.
This seems like it would be a fun film project for Liman to take on and I imagine he'd do some great things with it. For the most part, I like the films that Liman has made. He seems to have a knack for blending action and comedy.
The remake would be Liman’s next film; he is currently working on Choas Walking which stars Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley, which is due for release early in 2019.

The series produced three films, with the first, “The Cannonball Run,” released in 1981 by Fox with an impressive $72 million in box office. Warner Bros. acquired all sequel and remake rights to the franchise from original copyright owners Brock Yates,
Andre Morgan is producing with Alan Gasmer, while Albert S. Ruddy and Raymond Chow will serve as executive producers. Morgan produced the first “Cannonball Run” movies.
Released in 1981, “The Cannonball Run” chronicled an illegal cross-country race in which drivers of highly varying vehicles compete to make the trip from Connecticut to Redondo Beach, California in the shortest possible time. The hit comedy fictionalized the real-life Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, a tongue-in-cheek protest of speed limit laws held five times during the 1970s.
