Doug Liman in talks for The Cannonball Run reboot

With Central Intelligence and Skyscraper helmer Rawson Marshall Thurber having departed the director’s chair in order to reunite with Dwayne Johnson on Red Notice, THR is reporting that Warner Bros. is now in talks with Doug Liman about directing the planned reboot of the 1981 classic The Cannonball Run.

The new film, described as a “relaunch” of the series, has been penned by Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant (Night at the Museum), and also previously had Etan Cohen (Get Hard) attached to direct. As with the original, the movie will once again follow a group of rule-breaking misfits as they compete in an illegal cross-country road race from Connecticut to California.

Directed by Hal Needham, the original Cannonball Run featured an all star cast that included the likes of Burt Reynolds, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Jackie Chan, Roger Moore, Dom DeLuise and Farrah Fawcett. A hit at the box office,

Doug Liman Could Be Gearing Up To Direct ‘The Cannonball Run’ Remake

Edge Of Tomorrow and American Made filmmaker Doug Liman may be gearing up to take the keys of The Cannonball Run remake. The film previously had the likes of Rawson Marshall Thurber attached to direct, but The Hollywood Reporter now says that Liman is in early talks for the movie.

The original 1981 film featured an all-star cast, including Burt Reynolds, Roger Moore, Farah Fawcett, Dean Martin, Dom DeLuise and Jackie Chan, all of whom played characters racing across America in a variety of cars to win a cash prize. It was directed by the legendary stuntman Hal Needham.

Here’s the official synopsis for the original.

Contestants in a cross-country car race from Connecticut to California include a speed-loving racing driver disguised as an ambulance driver and his dimwitted sidekick, a pair of Ferrari-driving priests, and a James Bond-type character kitted out with secret weapons. Jackie Chan appears in

Doug Liman Attached To Direct ‘Cannonball Run’ Reboot

It appears that the reboot of “The Cannonball Run” has found itself in the hands of director Doug Liman, Deadline reports. A versatile filmmaker, Liman has been a staple of independent and big-budget cinema for the past 25 years, having directed such films as “Swingers,” “The Bourne Identity,” “Edge of Tomorrow,” and most recently, “American Made.”

It’s been somewhat of a winding road, pun intended, finding the right talent to bring this franchise back to life.

Edge Of Tomorrow Director Doug Liman To Helm a Remake of The Cannonball Run

Doug Liman, who is best known for films such as Edge of Tomorrow, The Bourne Identity, Jumper, and the upcoming film Chaos Walking, seems to have found his next film project. The director is in negotiations with Warner Bros. to helm a remake of the classic 1980's action comedy franchise, The Cannonball Run.

The original films starred Burt Reynolds, Frank Sinatra, Roger Moore, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Dom DeLuise. The story centered on an illegal cross-country race where the participants played dirty tricks on one another so that they could win. I assume the new film will feature the same premise.

This seems like it would be a fun film project for Liman to take on and I imagine he'd do some great things with it. For the most part, I like the films that Liman has made. He seems to have a knack for blending action and comedy.

Cannonball Run Remake Gets Edge of Tomorrow Director Doug Liman

After languishing in development hell since 2011, Warner Bros. is moving forward once again on their Cannonball Run remake, with Doug Liman in early talks to direct. The last we had heard about this project was almost exactly a year ago, when the studio brought in Rawson Marshall Thurber (Central Intelligence) to direct, but this new report reveals that a deal was never struck with Thurber. Liman will now be working from an existing draft by Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon (Night at the Museum franchise), although the studio is said to be seeking a new writer.

Both The Cannonball Run (1981) and Cannonball Run II (1984) were directed by legendary stuntman/filmmaker Hal Needham, with the first written by Brock Yates, who created the actual race the movie series is based on. The original Cannonball Run was actually not a race at all, with only one "team" participating, Car & Driver magazine
