Ted is telling his kids the crisis he endured at the announcement of his mother's second marriage to free thinking Clint, whose every word about Ted's mother is of a sexual nature. Not being able to contain his horror not only in her marrying a man like Clint but her marrying for a second time before Ted even enters into his first marriage, Ted runs off in the middle of the reception. But when he emerges 72 hours later, Ted is a new, happier man. He has circumvented his own non-marriage status by buying a house. Although he considers it his dream house, the gang see a run down uninhabitable rat trap. The home inspector concurs. Lily thinks she has at least a cathartic solution to Ted's problem. But it's Marshall who knows deep down what Ted will do. Meanwhile, Robin and Barney have differing stories about which of the two of them cried at Clint's sexually charged wedding serenade to and about Ted's mom. Did You Know?

When Barney is having a flashback of driving Ted's mom to the airport (about 15 minutes in), he says "and that's how you got the brooch." This is a continuation of the conversation Barney and her had in the episode Brunch (season 2, episode 3) where he asked about its origin. See more »

A Touching Episode
16 January 2015 | by See all my reviews

I liked this episode more than the previous one "zoo or false" mainly because of the touching nature of it ending.

Plot An A Paragraph: Ted is very upset that his mother is getting married for a second time to the free-spirited Clint, while he is yet to get married once. (Ted refers to this as his mam is lapping him) Upset at the wedding, Ted stormed out of the reception and is not seen again for 72 hours. When he resurfaces, he takes the gang for a little drive. At their destination it is revealed Ted has bought a house on a whim, everybody tells him he is crazy. However he is determined this fixer upper is his dream house. Meanwell Marshall invents a game called "was I drunk, or was I was a kid" and everybody tries to figure out who cried at text mums wedding, Barney or Robin??

I loved the ending to this episode, as a quick montage with Ted's voice-over explaining that the fixer he bought, was in fact the house that he lived in with the mother and the children whilst the song "Our House" by Crosby Stills Nash and Young played over it, is a highlight of the entire show not just this season. Surprisingly touching.
