    • Trivia
The scene where Chief Wiggum and the others use dynamite to blow up the whale is based on a true incident that happened in Matt Groening's home state of Oregon. On 12 November 1970, a whale beached itself at the Heceta Head beach (then called Devil's Elbow State Park) near the town of Florence. Usually, when a whale beaches itself, a deep pit is dug in the sand next to the whale and then the whale is rolled into it and buried. However, the sand at the Heceda Head beach is too shallow to dig a pit of the necessary depth, so the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department decided to use a half-ton of dynamite to reduce the whale to smaller, more manageable parts. The ensuing explosion scattered chunks of the whale over several hundred meters. One large piece of the whale totaled a car in a parking lot more than 100 meters away. KATU, the Portland ABC affiliate, filmed the event. Few people outside of Oregon had heard of the exploding whale until Dave Barry wrote of it in his 20 May 1990 column. Afterwards, it grew into an urban legend that seemed too absurd to be true. In 2006, the KATU footage was posted on YouTube. There is also an article about the incident titled "Exploding whale" on Wikipedia. These were posted after another exploding whale incident occurred in Taiwan in 2004.

Homer Simpson: Oh Lisa, I'm sorry. I tried my best. I know it's really hard when you discover your dad isn't perfect.

Bart Simpson: Not perfect? You can say that again.

Homer Simpson: I'm trying to be a sensitive father, you unwanted moron!

    Very Heartwarming Twenty Minutes,
The Squirt And The Whale is a terrific Simpsons episode with a very well written storyline and loads of very funny scenes. It's a very sweet, and surprisingly deep, episode that is both heartwarming and somewhat traumatic from the moment the main story starts, a plot between Lisa and a whale is clever and I'm surprised the show hasn't dealt with this subject previously, but I really didn't expect it to be as realistic and blunt as it is, the episode is pro-animal and certainly conveys a really important message about the rights they deserve. The only flaw with the episode that i didn't appreciate was that some of the jokes were too dark, there's only a handful of them but for the subject matter these jokes were too much, such as Homer and several other Springfield residents trying to pull the whale with their heads, and the products montage, it was a bit too sinister for my liking. The scenes before the main story starts off are also very funny and provide some great laughs before the serious plot kicks off, seeing Homer trying to hack wind powered electricity was a lot of fun and the montage of the family getting use to their new electricity had me in stitches. Heartwarming and unexpected from the show, but still dosen't forget to be funny, the Squirt and the Whale is s killer episode and a highlight for the twenty first season.

Lisa tries to save a whale she finds stranded at the beach, with some help from the townspeople.
