The character designs of the family are directly taken from the very first appearance of The Addams Family, which was in comic form, not the many different adaptations seen in movies and tv shows since then. The comics originally appeared as single-panel cartoons published in The New Yorker in 1938.
In a further strange set of inter-linked coincidences, the 1990s film version was originally created by Orion Pictures, based upon their earlier acquisition of Filmways, the company behind tbe 1960s TV version. With Orion's financial troubles, the film was acquired by Paramount, with the other bidder being Universal. In 2019, Orion is now part of MGM, who are jointly distributing the 2019 version with Universal.
The tree near the Addams' house is called Ichabod. This is in reference to Ichabod Crane, the main character in Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow (1999). Sleepy Hollow also had Christina Ricci play the love interest of Ichabod: Katrina Van Tassel. Ricci also played Wednesday Addams in both The Addams Family (1991), and Addams Family Values (1993).
Bette Midler, who voices Granny Addams in this film, had had a hit on Broadway playing Dolly Levi in a revival of Hello, Dolly! (1969). In the 1990's Addams Family cartoon series, Granny was voiced by Carol Channing, the original Dolly.
Back in 2010, it was announced that Illumination Entertainment, in partnership with Universal Pictures, had acquired the film rights to the Addams Family. The film was planned to be entirely stop-motion animated with the characters based on Charles Addams' original drawings. Tim Burton was set to co-write and co-produce the film, with the possibility to direct as well. In July 2013 however, it was reported that the film was canceled.
In possibly not a coincidence, the company behind the 1960s TV version of "The Addams Family", Filmways, would later become part of Orion Pictures, which in turn would have almost their entire combined library be acquired by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, who in turn in 2019 would release this animated film version of The Addams Family, via their United Artist label/Universal Pictures. Although its unclear if the 2019 computer animation is actually based solely upon the original Charles Addams source material and/or due to some acquired legacy rights, in part on the "inherited" Filmways television version.
