Alternate Versions

After the UK censors informed Fox that the R-rated cut of the film would be carry a 15 rating, the distributors cut out almost all strong language, some scenes of fisticuffs and bloodier violence in order to release the film with a 12A rating for theatrical exhibition only. The cuts were waived when released on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK in 2013 with a '15' rating thus presenting the US R-rated Theatrical Version uncut for home video release. The UK 12A Theatrical cut is not released on home video formats. See more »

Really Disappointing Sequel Should End It
13 February 2013 | by Michael_ElliottSee all my reviews

A Good Day to Die Hard (2013)

** (out of 4)

The fifth film in the series finds John McClane (Bruce Willis) going to Russia after learning that his son Jack (Jai Courtney) is in prison for murder. Once over there John runs into Jack and sees that there's more to the story and soon they're battling a wide range of bad guys. A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD is a pretty bad movie but the only thing that keeps my rating from being lower is the disappointment of how bad it is. I say the disappointment is rather heartbreaking because the first four films in the series were actually very good and intelligent action movies but this one here is just a loud mess. I'm going to place a lot of the blame on director John Moore who pumps up the soundtrack with loud music and other noises but sadly he doesn't make anything on the screen very interesting or entertaining. I found the entire story dealing with the bad guys to be rather bland and uninvolving. I found the back and forth between the upset son and father to be boring. I found no real development in any of the characters and the entire relationship between John and Jack is just silly. I also thought the action scenes were mostly disappointing and this includes the horrendous, CGI crap fest at the end. The ending is so embarrassing because of how fake it looks and not for a second do you actually believe anything you're watching. I'm not going to give away a bunch of spoilers but there wasn't a single frame of film that was believable. Even the usual classic one-liners are dead flat here and not a single one of them works. Willis just seems to be going through the motions. Yes, he fits into the role just fine but there's no energy going on in his performance. Courtney is a good action star but I felt very little here and even less chemistry with Willis. Sebastian Koch is good in his role but no one else really stands out in the cast. Again, had the disappointment of how bad this film wasn't strong enough to numb me, I think I would have rated this thing even lower. It's really a shame that this fifth film turned out so bad but there's just nothing good going on here. This becomes clear by the ten-minute mark after a wild chase sequence that just doesn't spark any real interest. With so much stuff going wrong here it's easy to see that they should have scrapped this film early on. Still, four out of five isn't too bad.
