China box office: 'Ready Player One' stays top for second week

With $170.5m total, China is the film’s biggest market so far.

Thanks to the three-day Qing Ming holidays (similar to All Souls’ Day in the West) which ran from Thursday – Saturday, last week’s Chinese box office (Apr 2-8) soared by about 27% week-on-week, the first rise in six weeks post-Chinese New Year.

Ready Player One earned $105.5m in its second week, making it the first Us film to top the charts for two straight weeks in 2018. Standing at $170.5m after 10 days, Warner Bros’ sci-fi adaptation is now the highest grossing foreign film and the fifth highest grossing film overall this year.

China Box Office: ‘Ready Player One,’ ‘Hindi Medium’ Win Holiday Weekend

China Box Office: ‘Ready Player One,’ ‘Hindi Medium’ Win Holiday Weekend
Steven Spielberg’s “Ready Player One” enjoyed a strong second weekend at the box office in China. It remained on top of the chart with $43.8 million in three days, for a cumulative score of $163 million after 10 days.

The film also benefitted from a bumper Thursday, when it scored $25.5 million. The day is a significant public holiday – Qing Ming or grave-sweeping day – and very much family time, which effectively made for a four-day weekend. Several new films released on Wednesday or Thursday, in order to take advantage of the holiday, instead of the usual Friday.

Most successful of these was India’s “Hindi Medium,” a family- and education-themed drama from last year, which opened on Wednesday. It stars Irrfan Khan, who has been seen in several Hollywood films, but does not have the strength of brand in China enjoyed by Aamir Khan. The film collected $11.7 million over the weekend for second place,

Ghost Stories movie review: hasn’t got boo to say

MaryAnn’s quick take… Not an anthology of complete short tales but the highlights from much longer stories only briefly sketched and left maddeningly unfinished. Barely a movie at all, more a tease of one. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): I didn’t love the stage play (but I had completely forgotten I’d seen it before I saw this)

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto) women’s participation in this film

(learn more about this)

Paranormal debunker Professor Phillip Goodman (Andy Nyman: Star Wars: The Last Jedi, The Commuter) is good at what he does. We can see that from the opening sequence of Ghost Stories in which he reveals a stage psychic — one of those leeches who feed off grief by purporting to speak to our beloved dead — to be a total charlatan in front of his audience.

Last month became the biggest March in China’s box office history, clocking up over $850m. Combined with the biggest February, the first quarter of 2018 has soared past $3.36 billion.

Unlike most territories, it wasn’t an Easter holiday weekend in China. In the week of Mar 26-Apr 1, Hollywood retained its dominance as Ready Player One became the fourth consecutive Us film to top the charts.

Warner Bros’ sci-fi adaptation took $64.3m from its three-day opening weekend, beating the 2013 re-release of Jurassic Park in 3D to become Steven Spielberg’s highest grossing film in China.

Emmy Predictions 2018: Outstanding TV Movie

Last Year’s Winner: “Black Mirror: San Junipero”

Still Eligible: Yes. (The series, not the episode/movie.)

Hot Streak: HBO has won more times in this category than all the other networks combined. The premium network has 19 total Emmys. In second place, CBS and NBC are tied — with six wins each.

Fun Fact: There have been four ties in the TV Movie category, but none since 1993.

Another year, another limited selection of TV Movies. After 2017 saw a Dolly Parton special nominated and an episode of “Black Mirror” win, 2018 is looking to be just as eclectic. Not only is Netflix’s anthology series back with another power player — the buzzed-about Season 4 starter, “U.S.S. Callister” — but Amazon’s original series, a mirror image of Netflix’s offering, is coming to play, too.

Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams” earned a bit of chatter for two episodes: “Kill All Others,” written and directed by Dee Rees,

Details emerge for Disney’s Dwayne Johnson led Jungle Cruise

  • HeyUGuys
Author: Zehra Phelan

Disney’s Jungle Cruise may still be in development but a brief synopsis has been revealed the Dwayne Johnson caper.

The adaptation which is based on the Disney theme park attraction isn’t due to go into production until later this year but already has Johnson attached, and recently revealed Emily Blunt has now signed up to star alongside Hollywood’s hardest working actor.

The synopsis reveals a slightly supernatural feel to the movie in which Johnson previously compared its tone to The African Queen. Johnson plays Frank (Francisco), a witty and immortal riverboat captain who takes Blunt’s spunky scientist down a river to find the mythical ‘Tree of Life’ following the death of her brother from a disease. Said ‘tree’ has curative powers.

Jungle Cruise Character Details and Supernatural Twist Revealed

The Disney theme park attraction Jungle Cruise will head to the big screen, most likely next year, with production slated to begin at some point this spring. Dwayne Johnson has long been attached to star, with Emily Blunt coming aboard last month, and now the first character details have surfaced for both of their roles. When Emily Blunt joined the cast, The Rock compared the movie to the 1951 classic The African Queen, and while these new plot details have yet to be confirmed, they do sound reminiscent of The African Queen, but with a supernatural twist.

&#8232If this new report is true, Dwayne Johnson is playing "Frank (Francisco)," described as "a witty riverboat captain cursed with immortality," who takes Emily Blunt's character, Lily Houghton, down the river. Lily is described as a "spunky scientist in search of the Tree of Life." Her quest for this mythical tree is, "inspired in

Shazad Latif on the Voyage From ‘Star Trek’ to the World of Online Jihadism

Shazad Latif on the Voyage From ‘Star Trek’ to the World of Online Jihadism
Back from his maiden voyage as Starfleet officer Ash Tyler on “Star Trek: Discovery,” British actor Shazad Latif has boldly gone into the strange new world of online jihadist recruitment in Timur Bekmambetov’s “Profile.”

The film, which screens in the Berlinale’s Panorama section, is based on French journalist Anna Erelle’s book “In the Skin of a Jihadist,” about her investigation into the recruitment of young women by Isis. It chronicles the online relationship between a British reporter, played by Valene Kane, and Latif’s character, a charismatic Londoner-turned-terrorist in Syria.

“Profile” is the latest in a growing number of “screenshare films” that Bekmambetov has championed, including this year’s thriller “Search,” which present vérité storytelling set entirely on the screens of digital devices.

For Latif, it was an opportunity to work with Bekmambetov, whom he describes as “visionary” and “very good at creating mini-genres.” It was also a chance to explore a “very weird love

‘Black Panther’ Review: Dir. Ryan Coogler (2018)

Black Panther review: Ryan Coogler kicks off Marvel’s 2018 with one of the most anticipated movies in the studio’s epic series of superhero films.

Black Panther review by Paul Heath.

Black Panther review

Marvel Studios’ first film (of three) set to be released in 2018 is the one with the most expectation. First off, there’s the director and co-writer Ryan Coogler, the 31-year-old helming a $200 million movie as his third feature (following the flawless Fruitvale Station and the outstanding Creed), then there’s the fact that this is the first McU movie post-Thor: Ragnarok from Taika Waititi, a film, for me, that switched up the successful Marvel formula somewhat with its wonderful off-beat humour and unique charm.

There have been waves of horn blowing from across the pond too with the U.S. critics lauding it as the best Marvel movie yet, and then there’s been the

10 Movies We’re Looking Forward To: February 2018

2018 kicked off in pretty strong fashion, all things considered. Though the first month of the year was still marked by its share of forgettable fare, films like horror sequel Insidious: The Last Key and Liam Neeson action vehicle The Commuter — the former of which currently stands as the highest-grossing domestic release of 2018 — found their audiences. Likewise, the much-lauded Paddington 2 delighted audiences in North America as much as it has overseas, and Steven Spielberg’s The Post entered wide release just in time to land Academy Award nominations for Best Picture and Best Actress contender Meryl Streep.
