Some time after being shot on duty, Deputy Sheriff Rick Grimes awakens in hospital to find it deserted with bodies strewn everywhere. He returns to his home to find it abandoned but believes his wife and son may still be alive. He meets Morgan Jones and his son Duane who explain to him that the world has been overrun with zombies (aka walkers). The disease usually started with an infection and high fever followed by re-animation. The creatures are attracted to sound and eat flesh to survive. Morgan tells him that he thinks there is a refugee center in Atlanta and Rick sets off in the hope of finding his wife and child. Once there, he finds himself surrounded by the undead with little apparent hope of escaping.....until he hears a voice over the radio.Written by
AMC pre-ordered the first season initially on the basis of the finished script, the comic book series itself and writer-producer Frank Darabont's involvement. (Ironically, Darabont would be fired from the show in the second season.) See more »
Towards the end of the episode when Rick is riding into Atlanta on horseback and while trying to flag down the helicopter he rounds the corner onto the street that is filled with zombies. As Rick stares in stunned silence for a second we get a clear view of the giant herd of walkers. Right before they start rushing after Rick and the horse one of the zombie extras can clearly be seen drinking from a bottle of water. See more »
[in a flash-forward, Rick sees a little girl walking on a deserted street]
Little girl? I'm a policeman. Little girl.
[the little girl stops]
Don't be afraid. Okay? Little girl.
[when the little girl turns around it's revealed to Rick that she's a walker by a part of her face missing]

The Walking Dead is a very popular show and all my friends constantly talk about it. This being the kind of thing I like to watch, I decided to check out this pilot episode. This is so good that I really can't find words to describe my feelings for this. This strikes a high note with your emotions and there's some great character development with our main character.
This is about a police officer who was shot and induced into a coma during a high-speed chase. When he awakens, he finds out the world has been overrun with zombies and his family missing. He become friends with fellow survivors, a father and his son. After he is told what the world has become, he set out to find his family.
Overall, this is a very fine pilot. It may not feature all action, but the drama is top notch. It has some emotional scenes which I usually don't see in the pilot. The acting is fine from what I see here especially from Andrew Lincoln. I rate this episode 10/10.
