Storyline

The men of the 1st Marine Division leave Melbourne and on the day after Christmas 1943, land on the beach at Cape Gloucester. They encounter little initial resistance - reminiscent of their landing at Guadalcanal - but the jungle and the weather work against them. It rains almost constantly affecting the men's morale and their health. Bob Leckie has been assigned to the battalion Intelligence officer but like the others, feels that the jungle is closing in on him. They are eventually evacuated to Pavuvu where Leckie falls seriously ill. He spends some time at the hospital in Banika before eventually returning to his unit. Back in the US, Eugene Sledge undergoes training at a Marine camp in California. Written by garykmcd

Goofs

As the US fleet steams toward Gloucester, one ship is flying the National Ensign from its jack-staff in the bow. The National Ensign is flown from the main mast once a vessel casts off from a port dock or when it weighs anchor. In port or at anchor, the National Ensign is flown from a staff at the stern of the vessel and union jack is flown from the bow jack staff. The National Ensign is never flown from the bow. [Leckie finds Runner and Gibson impassively watching the Marines clean up the aftermath of a Japanese banzai charge]
PFC Wilbur 'Runner' Conley: They got Obie.
PFC Ronnie Gibson: Macklin, too. I tell you, boys, next war, there's gonna be two men missin'... me and the M.P. they send after me.
[he gets up and leaves; Leckie sits down next to Runner]
PFC Robert Leckie: G Company took three alive.
PFC Wilbur 'Runner' Conley: Well, good for them. It was a banzai suicide attack for the rest of these guys.
PFC Robert Leckie: Apparently all the Japs on this end of the island are runnin' like hell to Rabaul. They ...

No Plot, Characters; no story
13 April 2010 | by davetreeSee all my reviews

Like all the previous episodes, there's just no character development to build on. The guy is shot; he's dying; the camera pulls at you; you don't know him. It's a cheap play on seeing another die. Yeah, of course you feel for him, but wtf, any idiot could throw together clips like this. And the mental treatment center--gimme as break.

How can you have a spoiler in this mess when there's NO plot and NO characters?!! Just found out I've got to waste 10 lines on this review for it to be printed. The photography, especially the old film clips, is great. That's about it it. This is no Band of Brothers. In trying to stay away from "Hollywood War" the producers jumped to the everyman "Generic". They lost.
