A draft of the script had Leatherface's name being Jebadiah Sawyer. However, this was later changed to Jedidiah Sawyer. In the 2003 remake, Jedidiah is the name of a young member of the Hewitt family.
In the opening scene, Bill Moseley, who portrayed Chop Top in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986), portrays Drayton Sawyer, the cook from the first two films.
John Dugan, who portrayed Grandpa in the 1974 film, reprises his role in the opening scene of this film.
Originally, a plan for a new trilogy was pitched. The films would be released out of chronological order, with the second film coming out first and being set almost entirely in a hospital. The next film would be a prequel explaining the events that led up to the hospital scenario. The third film would complete the storyline. Fearing it was too ambitious and risky, the producers opted for a follow up to the original instead.
In 2007, Platinum Dunes announced they were abandoning the series following The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006). In 2009, Twisted Pictures negotiated a multi-picture deal with Robert Kuhn and Kim Henkel, who own the rights to the series.
This is a direct sequel to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), and ignores the sequels and does not include the remakes produced by New Line Cinema.
Sheriff Hooper is named after Tobe Hooper, the creator of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974).
Gunnar Hansen, who portrayed Leatherface in the 1974 film, portrays a relative, Boss Sawyer, in the beginning of the film. This marks the first time Hansen has returned to the series since the initial film. In interviews, Hansen has said that he has been approached before but was never offered a salary that would entice him to return.
Although she had a rule against appearing nude in films, Alexandra Daddario offered to film the scene where she is tied up and has her shirt ripped open completely topless, but filmmakers decided not to, thinking that it would be gratuitous. Her character is shown to be braless, and despite previous assertions, has been braless since she changed clothes at the polices station, which is obvious in other scenes as well. Daddario finally appeared fully nude for the first time the next year in an episode of True Detective (2014).
Has the distinction of featuring a total three different actors portraying Leatherface: Gunnar Hansen as the one from the archive footage, Sam McKinzie as a young Leatherface, and Dan Yeager as the main one.
This film features four actors returning from previous installments, surpassing the record of three set by Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (1995).
It was 106 degrees in Shreveport on the day that the fire stunts were performed inside the burning Sawyer house at the beginning of the film.
Marilyn Burns, who played Sally Hardesty in the original film, plays Verna in this. This film and Butcher Boys (2012) were Marilyn's first movie roles in 28 years, excluding an uncredited cameo in Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (1995).
Both Alexandra Daddario and Trey Songz admitted to not having seen the original film prior to the production of this film. The only films in the series Songz had seen before were the remake The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) and its prequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006).
Dan Yeager is as of this film the tallest Leatherface at 6'6.
In one scene when Heather is exploring throughout the house she looks through a closet that has Marilyn Burns's Sally Hardesty-Enright costume from the original film.
Was filmed from July to August of 2011, and was originally scheduled for a release date of October of 2012. But due to competition like Silent Hill: Revelation (2012), Argo (2012), Sinister (2012), Paranormal Activity 4 (2012) and Taken 2 (2012), the film got shelved by Lionsgate and was eventually released into theaters in January of 2013.
In an interview with Collider, Alexandra Daddario said she didn't want to say the line "Do your thing, cuz," because she felt it was too silly. Then the producer told her the entire movie is supposed to be silly, so she ended up saying it.
One of Trey Songz's actual songs can be heard in the background when his character is playing pool.
In May 2011, Lions Gate announced that it would be partnering with Nu Image to produce the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and that John Luessenhop would direct the film.

Tania Raymonde auditioned for the film as a fan of the series and horror films in general.
Sheriff Hooper is an obvious nod to Tobe Hooper who wrote and directed the original, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974).
Scott Eastwood and Tania Raymonde both appeared in the pilot for the hit NBC drama Chicago P.D. (2014).

During the carnival scene, Leatherface runs past the attraction "Carnival Of Horrors," where a person runs out wearing the notorious pig mask and cloak that the character of Jigsaw wore in Saw (2004).
According to co-writer Adam Marcus, the van attack and the carnival and slaughterhouse sequences were much more gory and elaborate in the original script before rewrites.
Not counting the archive footage, the body count is 13 - Drayton Sawyer, Grandpa Sawyer, Loretta Sawyer, Boss Sawyer, Bear Sawyer, Darryl, Ryan, Kenny, Nikki, Officer Ollie, Officer Marvin, Mayor Hartmann, and Verna Carson who died of old age.
Aside from the Sawyer family and Verna Carson, the only other characters in the body count that Leatherface didn't kill are Ryan, Ollie and Nikki. Nikki is accidentally killed by Officer Marvin, Ryan is decapitated by the car crash (which was caused by Leatherface slashing the tires), and Ollie was killed by Heather. Verna dies of old age.
