The Wit, Wisdom and “Unvarnished Truth” of Terry Press: A No-Holds-Barred Interview
When consulting on the marketing and awards campaign for David Fincher’s The Social Network in late 2010, Terry Press needed to scope out the competition. She deftly arranged to see a screening of The King’s Speech at the Landmark Theatre on L.A.’s Westside. Swept up in the story, Press found herself weeping. “We’re going to lose,” she told a friend as the credits rolled.

She didn’t sugarcoat her opinion when reporting back to Fincher, producer Scott Rudin and then-Sony chief Amy Pascal. The Social Network might have been a critics’ darling and already an Oscar ...

Chloe Zhao (‘Nomadland’): Best Director Oscar would make history, but also continue trend of foreign-born winners

Chloe Zhao (‘Nomadland’): Best Director Oscar would make history, but also continue trend of foreign-born winners
Nomadland” filmmaker Chloe Zhao‘s unique place in Oscar history has been widely acknowledged. She’s the first woman of color ever to be nominated for Best Director and she’d be only the second woman of any ethnicity to win. She’s already the most nominated woman in a single year with her additional bids for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Film Editing. But there’s one way in which her victory for Best Director would be consistent with recent Oscar history: she’d continue the trend of foreign-born winners.

SEEOscar nominee profile: Adapted Screenplay ‘Nomadland’ offers a unique and haunting tone poem

In the last 12 years, only two Best Director winners have been American: Kathryn Bigelow and Damien Chazelle. Two were British: Danny Boyle and Tom Hooper. One was French: Michel Hazanavicius. One was Taiwanese: Ang Lee. One was Korean: Bong Joon Ho. And the other

Oscars May Have Trouble Overcoming TV’s Awards Show Ratings Problems

Oscars May Have Trouble Overcoming TV’s Awards Show Ratings Problems
Live events like awards shows were supposed to be what saves broadcast TV. But even while they’re stuck at home in the middle of a pandemic, viewers have lost interest in kudocasts — and the ratings declines this year don’t bode well for the future of the form.

The recent performance of the Golden Globes, Grammys and SAG Awards should make the producers of this month’s Oscars nervous. So far this year, year-to-year viewership for The CW’s Critics Choice Awards dropped 69%; NBC’s Golden Globes ceremony was down 62%; TNT and TBS’ simulcast of the SAG Awards dipped 52%; and CBS’ Grammys telecast fell 51%.

Last year’s Academy Awards, in which “Parasite” took best picture, averaged 23.6 million viewers — making it the lowest-watched on record. If this year’s trend continues, a 50% drop would bring it down to the shockingly low level of around 12 million.

The all-time peak remains 57.2 million

Could BAFTA win for Anthony Hopkins (‘The Father’) foretell Oscars surprise like it did for Olivia Colman?

Could BAFTA win for Anthony Hopkins (‘The Father’) foretell Oscars surprise like it did for Olivia Colman?
Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman share the screen in “The Father,” and they could share a pathway to Oscar as well. Two years ago Colman was a Best Actress underdog for “The Favourite” as Glenn Close was racking up plaudits for “The Wife.” But then Colman won the BAFTA Award, and she ended up overtaking Close for the Oscar too. Will it be the same for Hopkins, who just won BAFTA against current Oscar front-runner Chadwick Boseman (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”).

The thing about the BAFTAs is that if Hopkins’s victory was an anomaly, it’s pretty easily explained. A British person often wins against an American, especially in a close race, even if the Brit doesn’t end up winning the Oscar: consider Colin Firth (“A Single Man”) over eventual Oscar champ Jeff Bridges (“Crazy Heart”), Geoffrey Rush (“The King’s Speech”) over Christian Bale (“The Fighter”), and Dev Patel

2021 Oscars calendar: BAFTAs on April 10 and 11, final Academy Awards voting begins April 15

2021 Oscars calendar: BAFTAs on April 10 and 11, final Academy Awards voting begins April 15
The BAFTA Awards takes place across the weekend of April 10 and 11. Eight trophies will be handed out on Saturday with the other 17, including Best Picture, doled out on Sunday. The academy starts canvassing its members for their final votes for the 2021 Oscars on Thursday (April 15). That balloting period only runs for six days. The 93rd Academy Awards are on Sunday, April 25.

Since the BAFTAs moved up in 2001 to take place before the Oscars, these kudos have foreseen eight of the 20 Best Picture Oscar winners. The British academy previewed the Oscar wins for “Gladiator” (2001), “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004) and “Slumdog Millionaire” (2009). And they got it right in the first five years of the expanded Best Picture race: “The Hurt Locker” (2010), “The King’s Speech” (2011), “The Artist” (2012), “Argo” (2013) and “12 Years a Slave” (2014).
