Dr. Carol Nichols, the nexus of this story, is a prominent psychologist whose loving family appears to be a model of harmony and stability. Carol and her husband, David, are devoted to their two adult daughters, Katie and Lauren, and to Emily, their beloved granddaughter. Despite the obvious strength of their bonds, the Nichols family is far from perfect, and they struggle to come to grips with a dark secret from their past.

Carol must also contend with a growing resentment of Liz, an ambitious radio producer whose ruthless agenda is to promote Carol's career at any cost. Liz constantly pushes Carol to go national with their popular radio talk show, but goes too far when she suggests using the Nichols' family secret to land a lucrative book contract. The tension between the two women begins to thread its way into Carol's angst, making her only more determined to focus her energies on her private practice and keep her family out of the national spotlight.

Her professional and personal restraint almost reaches the breaking point when Carol unexpectedly collides with inspiration in the form of Anna, a troubled, single mother of three rowdy-but-lovable young boys. When Anna is accused of child abuse, Carol steps in to mediate, and is inexplicably drawn to her new client's spirited sense of independence. Despite Anna's tragic compulsion to live in a constant state of self-destructive chaos, Carol staunchly defends the reckless young woman against David's bitter opinion that she jeopardizes the safety and well being of her three sons.
