This is a reference to a 1993 incident that made national headlines regarding Lorena Bobbitt cutting off the penis of her husband John Wayne Bobbitt.

New Line Cinema got involved when Rawson Marshall Thurber convinced them to buy the script from Universal and the studio became the new domestic distributor through Warner Bros., while Universal handled overseas distribution.

Megan Park, who plays the waitress at the bar, had a starring role in The Secret Life of the American Teenager (2008), where she played a Protestant Christian saving herself for marriage. "Secret Life" also starred Molly Ringwald, who also starred in Sixteen Candles (1984), which Bob Stone is obsessed with.

Towards the end of the movie, Calvin asks agent Harris how will he contact her if he needs to talk to her. Agent Harris replies "just pick up the phone - we're always listening". Amy Ryan also starred in the The Wire as part of a team of police officers who used phone tapping to bring down drug dealers.
