'Lopez': TV Review

'Lopez': TV Review
Given that George Lopez has already had a sitcom, George Lopez, that ran on ABC from 2002-2007, producing 120 episodes spanning six seasons (well, the first season only had four episodes), then 286 Lopez Tonight shows on TBS from 2009-2011 and 10 episodes of the failed sitcom Saint George in 2014 on FX, you have to wonder why he needs or wants another show with his name on it. But he does, and has, and this one, not surprisingly, is called Lopez and premieres Wednesday on TV Land. And you know what? This time he might have hit

TV Review: ‘Lopez,’ ‘Hoff the Record’ Both Feature Stars Playing Themselves

TV Review: ‘Lopez,’ ‘Hoff the Record’ Both Feature Stars Playing Themselves
Just to prove there ought to be moratorium on sitcoms in which stars play themselves, two arrive the same week. TV Land’s George Lopez vehicle, “Lopez,” has the better platform, but is actually less interesting (and funny) than “Hoff the Record,” a British import built around David Hasselhoff, which lands on Mark Cuban’s “Do I even get that?” channel, Axs TV. And if that’s not enough, stay tuned, since Showtime’s “Dice,” featuring Andrew Dice Clay, is just around the corner.

Both “Lopez” and the six-episode “Hoff” spoof their respective stars’ image, but the latter is more pointed — at times uncomfortably so — in lampooning Hasselhoff, the premise being that he decamps for the U.K. seeking change and desperate for money, having pretty well exhausted all of his avenues in the U.S. Indignity upon indignity follow over the course of six episodes, with his U.K.

Samantha Bee Will Join Late-Night Fray in January

Samantha Bee Will Join Late-Night Fray in January
The spotlight in late night is on Stephen Colbert as he prepares to launch his CBS program next week, but Samantha Bee wants to grab some of the illumination, too.

The former “Daily Show” correspondent formally announced Wednesday that her new TBS program will be called “Full Frontal” and will debut in January. In a raunchy promo placed on YouTube, Bee placed heavy emphasis on the fact that her program will be the only one in the time slot hosted by a woman.

Bee did not reveal what time her new program will run.

Bee is likely to be the last major entrant into a time period in the midst of tremendous change. Over the last two years, Jay Leno, David Letterman, Chelsea Handler, Jon Stewart and Craig Ferguson have stepped down. There are relatively new faces behind the desk at nearly every major program that airs around the end of the day.

Jack Vale’s Social Media Pranks Featured On ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’

Jack Vale's social media "experiments" succeed at both entertaining audiences and warning strangers about the content they share on their online profiles. Now, that format has become popular enough to make it onto late night TV. Vale has teamed up with Jimmy Kimmel Live and Chevrolet for a series of pranks where he gathers information on strangers while driving around in a shiny new car. The Kimmel pranks work similarly to the ones that previously claimed millions of views on Vale's channels. Armed with a phone and a Chevy Equinox (which, as viewers are told several times, has built-in wi-fi), Vale picks up his family and Jimmy Kimmel Live sidekick Guillermo Rodriguez before cruising down to Hollywood Blvd. There, he has Guillermo find the Instagram profiles of passersby, who Vale then surprises by reciting their personal information. The video debuted on the September 18, 2014, episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live, making

Comedy Central Renews Chris Hardwick’s ‘@midnight’

“@midnght,” host Chris Hardwick’s popular weeknight panel show that famously mixes the best of what both social media and improv comedy have to offer, has been given a second season order at Comedy Central.

The show became a ratings hit — especially with younger viewers — by maintaining high social engagements through crowdsourcing campaigns like the Twitter-focused #HashtagWars and including edgier comedic guest panelists like Ron Funches and Natasha Leggero.

“People always ask me when ‘@midnight’ airs,” Kent Alterman, Comedy Central’s president of content development and original programming (possibly) joked when he made the announcement.

Hardwick, a comedian and former host of the MTV dating show “Singled Out” who grew in popularity through channels like his Nerdist podcasts before partnering with AMC on postmortem talk shows for their fan-favorited “The Walking Dead” and “Breaking Bad,” said “’@midnight’ has been an absolute dream come true for me — a game show of
