Neither the team nor the villagers are necessarily acting rationally. The team needs to leave as soon as possible, both parties want to avoid escalating the situation again, and it is unlikely that anyone could accurately calculate how many bags the mules could carry. It is entirely plausible that the team would abandon the excess money and flee rather than wasting more time renegotiating the truce. See more
