Battlefield 2042: Why the hate?
Platypuschow8 December 2023
Plot

In the near future the world has entered a set of constant chaos with a massive immigration crisis birthing a rebellion against the last all encompassing world government.

Cast

Not familiar.

Verdict

I grew up with first person shooters, but by that I mean Doom, Wolfenstein, Hexen, Rise of the Triad and more. When the multi-player generation kicked in I was rarely impressed, Medal of Honor? No thanks. Call of Duty? Meh. Online CoD bored me whereas Battlefield I got a level of enjoyment from. I could never understand why anybody would choose CoD over Battlefield.

Battlefield had bigger environments, more players in battles, vehicles (Ground, water and air) it was just superior in every way to me.

When Battlefield 2042 came out I remember hearing wall to wall complaints, people hated it so when I went in I assumed the worst. The thing is the complaints were never really specific, they were just claims they didn't like the game but rarely an explanation of why. Yes it had bugs, but what AAA games doesn't shortly after release? The trouble is it's over two years later and there are still bugs present, mostly frustrating graphical ones.

The game itself is solid enough, though a bit all over the place as it's set across multiple time periods and tries to be a bit too grandiose for its own good. WW2 battles? Sure. Modern battles? Sure. Futuristic battles? Sure. It makes loadouts a pain in the butt and I didn't like that it was so all over the place.

Everything else however is fine, the mechanics are solid, the locations are varied, every box is ticked so why the hatred?

It's not the best Battlefield game, but it's a decent enough entry.

Rants

No seriously, why do people choose CoD over Battlefield? I believe it's changed recently but prior the environments were tiny by comparison. You couldn't turn a corner without running into an enemy. No vehicles, fewer players....why!? Battlefield saw you riding a jeep across a sprawling environment, tanks roaring beside you, planes engaged in dogfights above, superior in every conceivable way.

Breakdown

Lots of environments Great logistics Multiple time periods don't work Unforgivable bugs.

So huge disappointment.
maulcun22 November 2021
I'm a huge fan of BF franchise, and I preordered the Ultimate Edition right when it was available. But I didn't think I would regret it. So huge disappointment.

Something has shifted fundamentally in development, these games are completely under delivered on every time they release. The players are also partly to blame for the state of games. I don't know how many times I've seen people saying things like "of course the game is buggy and incomplete, it just released", or "in six months will be a good game".

Dice has been doing this type of large scale games for years and for some reason instead of getting better they're getting worse.

This game doesn't have a scoreboard, no server list for all out warfare, no persistent lobbies, less game modes in comparison past games, no meaningful customization, no enjoyable progression, you can't select what squad you will join, you can't diving while swimming, no "medic nearby" indicator when you are downed, no spectator mode, no single-player campaign, very few weapons (Just 22 in total), the UI is absolutely horrible (We don't have any UI customization from the previous games), no voip or global chat, this game has one of the worst gunplay in modern gaming (terrible weapon accuracy/hit box isn't consistent and the bloom system is so much worse than in any bf that came before/uncontrollable), very few maps (Big maps with way too much space between points of interest and with no cover. Turns the game into a running simulator), downgraded destruction over it's predecessors, the physics are non-existent, and performance in general is trash (It's so badly optimized that they couldn't even create a trailer without frame drops).

I could cite more things, but other people already have done it better than me.

This game is an insult to video games and to the BF franchise. We deserve better. Don't buy It! Dont waste your money.

Such a missed opportunity.
pharris-0019427 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
All the fans wanted was a revamped BF4 with better graphics, maybe a bit more in the future. Thats it. Instead we get this dumpster fire.

The game literally plays like it was originally intended to be a Battle Royale game and then half way through they changed it to regular Battlefield, except they didn't cover their tracks well. At launch (beta) there was literally no way to request ammo. And due to lack of classes or squad based abilities, nobody carries ammo because there's so many other gear that makes you basically a walking Rambo. Specialist presets results in everyone looking exactly the same except you're this unique "character" rather than a basic soldier. Makes no sense.

No more medic/assault/support/recon. Now everyone is a jack of all trades. So you have people running around with an rpg, medic syringe gun, grappling hooks, an M416, 3 grenades, a squirrel suit (for tornado acrobatics), and all sorts of other goodies. Not to mention weapon attachments on the go.... Which is HIGHLY unrealistic. Even COD doesn't do that crap. Nobody carries around 3 optics, 3 different types of ammo, 2 grips, and 3 barrels. Its just rediculous.

Vehicles are underwhelming and impossible to kill. Tornados are way too distracting which takes away from the objective. But thats not even the main problem. People already don't play the objectives because it turns into a giant free for all thanks to no more class based set ups and squad based game play. Its just a bunch of monkeys grappling around and flying in tornados with rpgs. An utter mess. Fps drops, bullets do nothing but you die instantly, graphics almost look cartoony, no campaign, etc. A giant waste and giant let down. Back to Modern Warefare, Battlefield 4, and Halo Infinite. Much better games.

DICE killed the BF franchise
ansku-111 December 2021
Throw everything what was great on BF over board and try to copy CoD, Overwatch, Fortnite... and you get BF 2042 in addition with uncountable number of bugs and terrible design choices. BF had always an edge but they lost it.

R. I. P. Battlefield. I was a big fan once.

Terrible
nix-cornelissen20 November 2021
Bad graphics make everything look plastic. Sound design is bad. Maps are uninteresting. Movement is slow with no way to adjust sensitivity. Feels unfinished. I have no idea how this was approved for release.

Warning: Spoilers
...but you keep dying all the time, crashes and restarts every little time and seems like the creative team behind this game completely lost it. At least, on November 19th this is a frustrating stinker. Gamers deserve so much better.

I deleted my game.
franksrensen7 December 2021
To sum it up on a ps4 console.

The game is nowhere near to be a game ready to launch. (on any platforms!)

-Graphics is so bad you can actually see they removed most of it from the next console edition.

Bugs everywhere, not fixable bugs we are used to on launch. BUGS!!!

Some of whats missing. Some of it.... No servers No chat No squad options (kick/promote/switch squad/ join squad) No scoreboard(not so important for the gameplay itself) No ping enemy option, not even vehicles. Just a waypoint mark that instead block your sight of enemy.

The maps are open, naked, flat and not interesting at all.

They have not even cleaned it up, as you can find objects under the map itself.

This is stealing players money!

And they have a option to pay over 100 dollars for it as optional??

Yes i know they have the history of launching buggy games, but how far are we suppose to accept this?

Do you really want to buy a game that are unfinished? For 60-100 dollars? So you can not play it?

Played beta it was awful glad I didn't pay for the full game and glad I got my refund when I did
jamieaster-2287720 November 2021
The movment awesome graphics are no where near as good as battlefield 1 everything the fans want has gone down the drain which is a shame as its such a beloved franchise from this game that has started a decline hopefully battlefield can return to its roots in its next game for now ill be returning to battlefield 1 which was miles better than this trash of a game.

Meh...
evan_dow14 February 2022
So we go in to 2042 with a world still being ravaged by war. Welcome to Battlefield 2042.

Firstly, let me address the initial re-action of a lot of us when the game dropped and then the weeks after. Get over it. This game is actually pretty good despite what you might find out in social media.

But there were strength in numbers not including me after I settled down with it, however, but a lot of people seemed to be rather unhappy. People had forgot though, the game could be overhauled at a later date due to edits the developers have in console gaming nowadays. They just took it at face value then spit the dummy.

The glaringly obvious difference about this game is it encourages you to play in a squad. Unlike other Battlefield games, you can just become the lone ranger. But still, if you play, you will see nobody cares and never did about playing in a squad.

This is a flexible game this time round because you can be a sniper, but be a medic too. So you will have what a medic carries in their kit, but also be armed with a sniper rifle.

There are a few maps when you start I don't know whether more will be available as downloadable content (DLC) but I think it is expected there will be many more.

According to DICE, who apparently fired a lot of their staff before launching this project, they think 2042 is going to be a year in which nothing really changes. Well, not in a strikingly significant fashion. Just don't go in to this game expecting flying tanks with laser beams and mech warriors. Nothing has really changed since Battlefield 4.

Given the poor reception, you could get this game at a sale price. Have a look around but at the end of the day it will be the internet which will enable you to save the most money.

Game on.

Is Battlefield worth it in 2024?
adamwilli-4909322 January 2024
We all know that Battlefield 2042 was a huge disappointment when it was first released back in October 2021. To be fair it has been improved in the past year with loads of bugs being patched and some new updates such as new movement, new maps and many more needed changes. One of the disappointing things about this game is the fact it has no campaign which could of had so much potential. It could have even gone into more detail about the refugee crisis and what it is like to live in that universe during those events. One of the great aspects of this game is the ground warfare which can be so immersive it could keep you hooked for hours and with new guns, skins and vehicle styles there is always something new for you to unlock. I actually really like the style they have gone for with this game such as the futuristic vehicles and gadgets, I actually think it's quite unique compared to other games that are set in the near future with there laser guns and robot suits it just doesn't feel believable but Battlefield 2042 does because of the situation with climate change, the guns, the soldiers and the vehicles it just feels more real compared to those over games. If you have a PlayStation, Xbox or PC and you are looking for an immersive action packed game with beautiful graphics this is the one for you.

I'd Call it a Comeback!
cchenders4019 October 2022
I'd call it a comeback!

My late 2022 review of this game is basically that this game came back in a big way. They have supported the heck out of this game (pulling the Titanfall/Apex team over to work on it and fix its faults). There are tons of new maps and mods, the battle passes are actually pretty good. The game works and plays really well now and they are getting rid of the hero avatar system which is a good call. If you are looking for a GREAT battlefield experience, this game is now there and worth your time and money (especially with it now selling for $20 in some places).

This game's comeback however, does not excuse how bad the launch was, it was in all honesty a broken game with no content at release. Publishers have to start forcing games out like this. With that said this is a great game to come back to now if you want a great battlefield experience on next gen.

I regret buying this game
chefmarty-348338 January 2022
Bought the game on Xbox series s on sale for $40 and the game feels so unfinished and the game feels so empty. They have no mic chat, micro transactions for mostly just skins and that's pathetic. No story mode and the hero class is awful. DICE is a pathetic company.

sub-par product
ajaysinghg0426 December 2021
Hello readers, i've been on this website for 15 years and made an account a decade or so ago and this is my first review so let that add or subtract from your approval of my judgement as it may, all that time i didn't add anything because i felt i did not have much if at all to contribute to the already existing reviews & discussions but i think i have an answer to why an unknown trait is missing and why people can't point out the ominous ever-present feeling of 'something ain't right here'

i like the Godzilla movie from 1998, i realize it's not a particularly well acclaimed movie in a critic's eyes and my brain's critical side knows that too but i feel as giddy as the first time i watched that movie when i was a kid it's a homely mindless escapist fun filled with amazement, awe and child-like wonder to me

a similar pleasure can be derived from this game and nothing more; not unless you stop caring altogether about criticism warranted or otherwise

and the reason is that DiCE and think tanks alike financed by wall street firms have found a way to get short-term profit for the shareholders and not piss off a substantial percentage of the customers by offering a less than mediocre product but hinging their goodwill hopes of improving the game as time goes on

this psychological trick is the reason the game is as it is today - very far from a masterpiece but also VERY far from a bad product

this is the aether that is responsible for the reduction in quality (subjective and objective), unfinished product at release and a myriad of other boilerplate issues associated with this game's release and the decisions taken by the developers and the executives at DiCE

this is what is happening in the video-game, automobile and movie industries along with the fact that a new sucker is born everyday, people have thinner skins because social media has designed their algorithms to keep the in-fighting going along with dumbing down the room algorithms perpetuating this phenomena.

This will sell as has been selling and has been sold; this is the way the system works and sustains designers and decision-makers and the people dependent on them.

Few chase quality, and a fewer still achieve it and even then some achieve more than others (but you can't tell if that is the case without a scoreboard); most chase money and you can't even blame them for being greedy cos it's just sustenance.

I am sad this tide hit this franchise too.

Cheers and thanks for reading.

-J.

It's very good now!
omermuammer-4265827 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The game at the time of its release was very bad and full of errors and glitches, and its rating was no more than 3 out of 10, but EA, as usual, starts its games and has many glitches, and with time it starts to improve it, and this time Battlefield 2024 started with a very bad game, but season after season the game started to improve and now it is the same One of the best shooter games, especially after updating the fifth season. My advice is to try it again and give it a new chance, because you will notice a radical change in the game in all aspects, especially in terms of FPS and fun without glitchs.

Not the BF you're used to
diogogirondi9 January 2022
This game is a bit of disaster in several areas. A pretty big one at that considering past titles and how it managed to ruin not only 2042, but also leave 1942, BF3 and Bad Company 2 with some bad taste.

The whole thing looks plastic and has no atmosphere. It feels empty and soulless. The amount of content is a joke and couldn't be more laughable. The maps are far from great and you can barely find any games. Menus are a utter mess and guns are "meh".

The whole "specialists" thing is interesting but completely disrupts what makes Battlefield memorable. Team work between classes. Of the few game modes it makes available (ignoring the Portal feature), none demands much teamwork. It all boils down to a big team death matches in large maps where objectives a secondary.

I wish I could have my money back. Battlefield V is infinitely better than this and it is far from being among the best iterations of Battlefield.

It gets a four star rating just for allowing me to play two Bad Company 2 maps in hardcore mode. Otherwise it would be a resounding 2.

Worst bf to date
majnus-493-84321621 July 2022
The list of features they took away is actually longer than the list of features in the game. Literally few weapons, flat maps, constant connection issues, countless bugs - this is a solid contender to be the worst game of the decade.

Trashy devs, trashy game
iosterhout-5796830 April 2022
The devs released a bad game with hardly any content, refuse to take any kind of blame, and are making the consumers aka their fans who are criticizing them for their trashy release out to be the enemy.. These devs should not be allowed to act like this and i believe we oughta let their company die.

Because 0/10 isn't an option.
markbrad-8709311 February 2022
Strip away everything you loved about the franchise. And you've got this. A shell of its former self. A soulless, sloppy, weak attempt at the status quo of "pop shooters".

This game has lost 50% of its player base on steam EACH MONTH since release.

One of the worst ALL TIME reviewed games on steam.

Save your money. And your time.

Disappointment is an understatement.
ashleycholerton16 March 2023
I downloaded this on ps plus last week and I really was not expecting anything this poor.

I know it was released in a bad way but had heard about it's improvements since so thought why not.

Firstly, the fact that the ps5 version cannot join friends on a ps4 version is irritating to say least. Playing the game is more of a chore than enjoyable. The game repeatably spawns you in front of someone who is firing in that direction leads to instant deaths. The maps are so empty and boring, more like playing a ps2 game than something released for this generation.

What really shows a complete lack of care put into the game is that it takes minutes sometimes just to load the weapons on the collection screen. Having to wait just to check my mastery progress on a single weapon is truly pathetic and can't remember ever seeing anything like it on a game.

Not only does this game look bad in the fps catagory, but also doesn't do well against previous iterations in its own series. It looks like a very rushed and another very poor cash grab by EA and Dice.

Once in the game, one thing that does load well and quickly is the store front for awful micro transactions. £8 for cosmetics is already a complete rip off, but on a first person shooter it's actually stupid too.

So this is it. The final time I will download an EA published game without extensive looks at reviews and gameplay. Even downloading it for free on ps plus, I still feel like I've been overcharged. I've had time wasted that I could have been playing many other games and enjoying myself.

So I'll be honest so haven't played the game, considering it's only multiplayer and portal (no campaign sadly)
THEBMAN12320 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I haven't played it being honest, but seeing twitch/YouTubers/streamers play it, looks like EA has failed big time on delivering the battlefield games we always know. They rushed it and didn't give a chance or time which seems to be the reasoning behind most games coming out now. I started with battlefield 3 and played 100-200 hours of multiplayer and beat the campaign/collectibles and such. It was such a amazing game even graphics now a days are still gorgeous and gun animations are top noch. With battlefield 2042, characters look like Minecraft Steve sometimes, guns don't function when aiming down sights, HIT detection is awful, servers and connection is unplayable, and then charging 60-100 something dollars for the game normal and deluxe edition is absurd and should be illegal. EA used to be legit and their games were always perfection even the dlcs but they have failed on this game and I hope they change or do something immediately before it's to late. (bf3-bf4 and bf1 and bf bad company 2 were the greatest)

mattiasalonzo19 August 2023
Ever since the big update came they changed a lot of things in the game like bug fixes and more

I feel like this game is underrated and just misunderstood, this game has potential in the future

When I first saw the review of this game, I thought its was going to be bad but they are wrong, it doesn't matter!

It was really enjoyable for me and they had tons a maps to play with other players, can also drive planes and tanks, cars and more!

Sure that the other battlefield games are much cooler but this one is good as well, so I would recommend playing it for yourself and have tons of fun in this game...

grahamlove17 December 2021
It's hard to believe with all of the people behind the development and all the money that no one stopped this being released onto the world. Its a backwards step from the franchise with no campaign and nothing new to offer. Building is gone, weapon set up at bad, UI is God awful. Save your money.
