After impressive narrative style hits like "Dangerous Liaisons" and La Dolce Vita" Michael Lucas has opted for the commercial route: all-sex videos just as the audience demands. This decision ruins "Lost Diary of Giovanni", a 3-hour exercise in homosexual couplings devoid of content, style or anything but big-dick generic sex.
There is only one brief dialog (actually monologue over the phone sequence) near the end when Giovanni calls a friend to tell him that, you guessed it, he's lost his diary. G. calls it a journal, but such niceties are insignificant when filming with no script.
The six over-long sex scenes consist of illustrations of sex couplings G. fantasizes as he sees guys hook up on the sidewalk or subway near Times Square. Even the pantomime is still-born, as Lucas and his co-conspirator behind the camera "Mr. Pam" are in a hurry to get to the sex. The positions and groaning are repetitive and indistinct, though Lucas has the biggest cock in the cast and gets to do two scenes back to back -first humping fellow big-dicker Rafael and then having a 3-way when Giovanni arrives to fetch his journal that Mike found on the sidewalk.
Clumsy direction has the two studs grabbing and humping G. immediately as he walks in their door, with no set-up, build-up or anything resembling a movie. It's sad to witness, as late as 2009 when this was shot, such a reversion to loops masquerading as a feature.
The BTS short subject on an extraneous (marketing purposes come-on only) second disk filled with 2 hours worth of trailers shows Giovanni the 19-year old actor has a winning personality, making it all the more disappointing that he is not allowed to do anything in the feature but scribble in his book and hump. The sex scenes are staged in nondescript bedrooms (again a reversion to the cheapo early days of porn and 1-day wonders), far from the fantasy one supposes Giovanni was conjuring up
