The meaning of the series ending is right there!!
verbeekmarco10 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Did anyone ever notice that in this episode, the meaning of the series ending is portrayed by Sawyer watching television.

"That evening, James arrives home and prepares a microwave frozen dinner. He sits down and watches an old episode of Little House on the Prairie. A little girl, Laura, tells her father that she would be devastated if anything ever happened to him and her mother. Her father tells her that if you live your life worrying about the future, life will be over before you know it. He tells her that people aren't really gone once they die, and that you hold on to their good memories until you see them again."

Intriguing island arc, twisted and inspiring urban story, convincing acting, surprising relationships and wicked dialogs
igoatabase18 March 2010
Widmore was obviously doing a little recon in his submarine at the end of Dr. Linus so this episode was obviously about that new arc. It was really unexpected and when I heard his name I instantly thought that his daughter Penny or even Desmond would be around. But Recon featured Sawyer and it's definitely a good thing considering how interesting the character is and how Josh Holloway performance has been convincing so far. Moreover there was something intriguing and ironic about an ex-con doing recon for Locke and his team. With Jack on the other side and now Widmore things are really getting intense. A good and evil battle already sounded epic but now there're three opponents to bet on. Show time !

One arc logically took place on the island with Sawyer, Black Locke, Kate and the others. The scenes between our two ex-lover birds were delightful because they brought many sweet and sad memories. One of them was well filmed and the smooth editing really contributed to make these moments memorable. One minute Swayer thinks about Kate, the next you see her musing in the jungle. These are the little details you have to pay attention to if you want to comprehend how great this 6th and last season actually is. As for the story itself it was excellent and we even got to learn more about the relationship between Locke, Kate and Claire. These women shared some very emotional moments and I hope the young mother will meet her daughter again one day. For the moment it sounds like an impossible mission but with Kate everything is possible. As for Sawyer I enjoyed his unpredictable behavior as always and wonder if the characters he lied to know it or not.

The other arc occurred in the city with the Sawyer we all know but with a twist. The beginning was very surprising and the WOW Factor™ of the scenes was really high. In fact I instantly jaw dropped when what was going on was revealed. However now that I think about it the writers could have imagined many other ways to amaze the audience. It's peace of cake when you have the best con in your show. As for the story itself it was quite inspiring, as much as Ben or Kate one. Think and act. Take the right decision, or wrong direction. It's like if these urban legends were metaphoras of what the island characters want. Like John in he Substitute, Sawyer collided with other characters. These encounters and relationships greatly contributed to make him grow on us even more.

Recon was a unique episode with an irresistible LaFleur flavor and dozens of elements to explore. When it ended I instantly wanted to watch it again because I knew I missed some things. Indeed many dialogs were very powerful and you never really know if the characters tell the truth or not. Last but not least the last scenes were quite intriguing so waiting for the upcoming episode will definitely test your patience.

Sawyer's Assignment
claudio_carvalho22 April 2013
In the island, Locke asks Sawyer to row to the smaller island to investigate the situation. Sawyer finds all the passengers of the Ajira Flight 316 dead and only one survivor, Zoe. The smart Sawyer discovers that Zoe is lying, but he is captured by an armed group and brought to the submarine of Charles Widmore that proposes him to betray Locke.

In the parallel reality, Sawyer is a LAPD detective working with Miles. He is obsessed to find the man that destroyed his family. He has one night stand with Charlotte, but his obsession affects his relationship with Miles and Charlotte. Out of the blue, Sawyer arrests a fugitive.

"Recon" is another episode with half-story about the island and its mystery and another pointless view of the lives of the lead characters entwined in an alternative universe in Los Angeles. My vote is six,

"Trust me, God's got nothing to do with it" Warning: Spoilers
Season 6 finally seems to be getting on the right track, after the first 3 episodes disappointed me a little. Since "The Lighthouse" Lost has been at it's best, and while "Recon" isn't as good as "Dr.Linus" (for me the best episode of the season so far, thanks to that Jack and Richard scene on the Black Rock), it was still a great episode to watch, since we had very interesting flash-sideways and very intense island arc. Josh Holloway was at his best yet again, and is starting to threaten Terry O'Quinn, Matthew Fox, Michael Emerson and Henry Ian Cusick for the title of best actor in this series.

About the episode itself, there were things that left us with a smile on our faces, such as the opening scene, very similar to the scene where Sawyer met Cassidy, this time with a different end, or the appearance of Charlotte. Also nice to see the "old" Sawyerm lying to everyone to serve his own purposes, just as he did in "The Long Con".

Of course some things I didn't understand or didn't liked, such as the fact that after all the trouble to get Ben Linus, Widmore finally comes back to the island and seems to have forgotten about Ben, or seeing Sayid seemingly stoned or don't seeing Juliet appearing in the flash-sideways..

But still, one good episode, maybe the third best of the season, only surpassed by "Dr. Linus" and "Sundown"

On a recon mission
TheLittleSongbird22 September 2018
When 'Lost' was in its prime, it was must-watch television. Remember first watching it, found it remarkably easy to get into, was hooked from the start and was on Season 3 by the end of one week. The general consensus is that the final season is a disappointment and cannot disagree.

It, Season 6 that is, started promisingly enough with "LA X", both parts, before reaching disappointment with the still watchable "What Kate Does", which had great moments but a dull and soap-heavy central story. "The Substitute" was a step up and one of the best of the episodes up to this point of the season (second best), but not one of the best 'Lost' episodes, did find a couple of issues with it but can understand why critically it has been positively received. "Lighthouse" to me was uneven but decent.

After two excellent episodes in "Sundown" and especially "Dr Linus", "Recon" is a slight disappointment. Don't get me wrong, it is still very good indeed with many great things, and one of the episodes so far of the season that is indicative that not all the sixth season disappointed. Up to this point of the season, only "Lighthouse" and particularly "What Kate Does" did.

"Recon" fares better in the on-island events storyline. In that there is a lot of tension, intrigue, emotion, tautness and unexpected and unsettling twists and turns. One learns more, things are built upon, things are made clearer and the character motivations are less confused and vague as a few of the previous episodes were. The Los Angeles storyline is not quite as good, so there is a slightly disjointed feel.

In this storyline, there are intriguing and thought-provoking moments and there are moments of unpredictability and emotional power. Really liked the development for Sawyer, which avoids reiterating things already known and instead illuminates or builds upon what is familiar. At the same time, there is not as much excitement, tautness or surprises as in the on-island story, so it was not quite as gripping. Some of it was a little clichéd and soapy and the pace could have been tighter if a couple of not so relevant parts were excised.

The whole episode is very well acted from everybody, with Josh Holloway turning in excellent work, matched by Alan Dale (managing to still intrigue and chill as Widmore) and Rebecca Mader. The characters are compelling and don't feel stereotypical or cartoonish. The character interaction adds to the tension and emotion and the ending makes one excited and impatient for what's coming next.

Furthermore, "Recon" is a typically exceptionally well made episode on a visual level, being very stylish and atmospheric. The music is chilling and understated, while most of the writing is tight and the direction has control yet alertness.

On the whole, very good. 8/10 Bethany Cox

Some good twists in a fair episode
gridoon202418 March 2010
Warning: Spoilers
"Recon" isn't bad, but it's still a strong candidate for the title of Sawyer's weakest episode in the entire series. After "Sundown" and "Dr. Linus", where the flash-sideways had some actual thematic connection to the on-island events, we're back in "Lighthouse" territory, where the alternate reality scenes just play like an irrelevant little mini-movie of their own. And although "Recon"'s flashes are not nearly as dull as "Lighthouse"'s, they're not as entertaining as "Dr. Linus"'s, either. What may be notable about them is that, from all the Losties we've seen so far, Sawyer seems to be the one with the unhappiest "alternate" life. Still, a cop is better than a crook (at least in the conscience, if not necessarily in the wallet!), and he also doesn't seem to have murdered an innocent man in this timeline, either. There is one good twist right at the end of the flashes, but Charlotte's return feels rather pointless (loved hearing her accent again, anyway). Alternate Miles seems more no-nonsense than the regular one. Back on the island, not much happens. Sawyer confronts both Flocke and Widmore, and they both offer him the promise of getting off the island in exchange for following their orders, so he has to choose the side that gives him better chances. Another good twist has to do with that Tina Fey - lookalike whom Sawyer meets during his recon mission in the Hydra island (yeah, he makes a stop at the cages too. I'm one of the few who actually enjoyed those episodes). Overall, "Recon" is watchable but minor. *** out of 4.

The Greatest Missed Dialogue Opportunity Of The Series
eddietorbalinda28 September 2021
When I saw Zoe for the first time, I was certain Sawyer was going to say something like, "Yo, Tina Fey, drop the weapon."

Didn't happen.

A great writing opportunity missed by the writers.

Bummer, it was the perfect line for Sawyer.
