- At a function, they zoom in on the woman in the pink dress. It's zoomed on her cleavage, she's very endowed and they bounce as she walks. It's hyper focused on them for several seconds.

- Virtually everyone, Skeeter included, smokes. And in a self-conscious wink at people's attitudes toward smoking during that era, Skeeter's boss says, "I guarantee you one day they're going to figure out that cigarettes kill you."
- Social drinking is almost as frequent as the smoking. Many scenes show white people downing mixed drinks or martinis. One of Skeeter's dates is obviously drunk, and keeps ordering shots. Celia is drunk at a socialite event, and gets sick (off screen). Hilly drinks and drives in one scene.

- Yule Mae Davis gets hit by a baton from a police officer after she resisted arrest
- Minny reveals that she made a chocolate pie for Hilly that has Minny's feces in it, as revenge for wrongfully firing her. This reveal is referenced and spoken about several times.
- Celia has a miscarriage. She is on the bathroom floor, screaming, and a brief shot shows a lot of blood between her legs. She later buries the dead fetus in her front yard, with her other miscarriages.
